A Gumby person?

So what does it mean when they say someone is Gumby? Funny? Cool? Helpful? or what?

It's also a nickname for someone who is very "flexible" in any sense of the word -- either double-jointed (someone with very limber joints), or very adaptable in different situations. GUllman 23:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject.
IMO it does need to be made clear that "gumby", in the family of senses discussed in this section, is on-topic on this page only for the purpose of clarifying the fact that it is off-topic for the accompanying article. An article on the noun (adjective?) would be lexicographic rather than encyclopedic, about the word and not about what the word represents. (There are a few words whose status is so involved --
NOT "Everything for Everybody".
Despite that, my view is that tolerating such talk-page discussions has benefits at tolerable cost: Newcomers get acquainted with our style of discussion, and see what kinds of discussion get reflected in the accompanying article; the time wasted by editors reading discussion that cannot lead to article content is not a big deal, in light of the inefficiency of both many eyeballs and our numerous, voluminous on-topic discussions.

Gumby did not have a girl friend, But he did have a uncle and male cousin both voiced by Australian actor Peter Greenwood.

Cartoon Network?

I don't believe that even existed in 1995, Gumby was on Nickelodeon.

I recall watching The Gumby Show in syndication on cable when I was a kid in the 90s. It was either Nickelodeon (which I'm leaning towards) or Cartoon Network. Public Domain?

Just curious, are any Gumby episodes in the Public Domain? I'm doing an

Only very brief of Eddie Murphy's version of Gumby in the article?

I'm surprised there's no mention of Eddie Murphy's version of the Gumby character from when he was a performer on Saturday Night Live. I do understand he wasn't perhaps "officially" performing as Gumby, but he did put on a costume that looked like the actual Gumby character. One could debate that part of the actual Gumby character's new popularity in the 80's was due to his, for lack of a better term, interpitation of the actual Gumby claymation character. Okay, to edit myself I did find VERY brief mention of the costume used by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live. Still, I'd think the article should have a bit more mention of his version of the Gumby character. I am in my early 40's, I honestly wasn't aware of the Gumby character as a child until I saw him do a skit on Saturday Night Live in the early 80's. I then asked my parents what character he was imitating, and found out about the original claymation version of the Gumby character that way. I'd suspect for many, their first exposure to Gumby was through his version of the character, and then from that seeking out or at least asking about the actual claymation shows. 69.76.14.139 (talk) 16:04, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In short, no. It has little, if anything, to do with Gumby. It may very well be true, but it's not notable. Apart from using
weasel words to describe just who it is that sees this similarity, it's not a notable event with regard to the character. Doubtless other characters have had similarities, and those wouldn't be notable either. If the rights holders became involved in some way, I'd say it would be fair game. Dick Beals not the original voice of Gumby

With the death of Dick Beals, the news media has been repeating that he was the original voice of Gumby. He was not. The original voice was a woman named Ruth Eggleston. Beals provided voices in some episodes of the show, but if he ever voiced Gumby, it was not on a regular basis, and it was not until later in the run.

"Art Clokey has made a number of timeless archetypes that represent something special for America. What those characters sound like is a large part of their personas. We asked Art about the people whose voices are part of the characters. Who did the first voice of Gumby, and who did the voice after that?

“Well, the first voice of Gumby was a woman. She was the wife of our art director and first artist, Al Eggleston. Her name was Ruth Eggleston. Art and Ruth Clokey brought on Al and Ruth Eggleston as their fist collaborators. Art and Al came up with sets, while Ruth Eggleston, Art and Al provided the voices for most of the characters in the 1956 episodes.

During the 1957 episodes, Dallas McKennon voiced Gumby, and Art continued to do Pokey, Gumbo and various other voices. Dal was an experienced actor who did major voice work for many Disney classics such as Bed Knobs and Broomsticks and Mary Poppins. He later was the voice of Archie and Buz Buzzard, and he starred in The Daniel Boone Show as Cincinatus.

In the early 60’s, Ginny Tyler of Mickey Mouse Club fame did the Gumby voice for a few episodes, while Dal was the voice of Gumby for most of the episodes in the early 60’s. Dick Beals (who was also the voice of the 1960’s Davey) subbed as Gumby’s voice for a few episodes in the mid 60’s. Norma McMillan (the late 60’s/early 70’s Davey) was the voice of Gumby in the late 60’s. She was also the voice of Casper the Friendly Ghost. Dal came back to do the voice of Gumby in the 80’s series and the 90’s movie."

Perhaps the confusion comes from the fact that Norma MacMillan replaced Dick Beals as Davey, and her Gumby voice resembled her Davey voice. Those who did not know that Davey had more than one VA may have mistakenly assumed that it was Beals voicing Gumby in the instances where it was MacMillan.

Either way, Art has said on multiple occasions that Ruth Eggleston was Gumby's original voice, and having seen the early shorts, I can say that it is definitely not Dick Beals in those.--TServo2050 (talk) 22:01, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Prema's Pokey lawsuit against a child

Wikipedia seems devoid of information on the stupid lawsuit by Prema Toy Company against a child nicknamed Pokey (for completely unrelated reasons) over his Pokey.org blog. This received national press coverage (New York Times, etc.), has been devoted entire chapters in mainstream books like Copyfraud and Other Abuses of Intellectual Property Law, and Unusually Stupid Americans: A Compendium of All-American Stupidity, and is a frequently cited example of the Streisand effect, of copyfraud (technically "markfraud"), and of a nuisance lawsuit. I suspect a whitewashing job has been done on these articles by Prema or someone closely connected with them. WP used to have comprehensive information about this. This is actually affecting the Googleability of information about the case – it's getting difficult to find much if you don't know the full case name.
