This is not an encyclopedic article

Shouldn't a biographical article explain what a person does instead of what a person is? A list of titles and a list of sons is all we have for such an important person in Middle East affairs as the Emir of Quatar.... I am surprised at the lack of comments about what he has done during his life and the absence of any controversies or even useful information in this article. I came here after reading that the Emirate has funded Al Jazeera. I confess I admire Al Jazeera approach to journalism and I was expecting to find something that explains the character of this man, but I was disappointed by the lack of information in this article. I will search for a couple of acts in his life and add them, but I wonder why no Quataris add something to this biography. The list of sons and grandsons quoting them as racehorse owners is pathetic... Imagine saying about Barack Obama that he is a Portuguese Water Dog owner (which is the actual pet of the President of the US). Surely he must have done something that creates support for his actions and, at the same time, some controversy. The more I read about him, the more I like the Quatari Government attitude in the face of current Middle East situation. It's hard for me not to sympathize with his actions in regard of free press in the area. Ciroa (talk) 10:48, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

the Indonesian Order of Ibn 'Azeem

I'm Indonesian and I've never heard of this Order. Where is the source of this statement? 202.58.180.51 (talk) 06:52, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked the Emir's website, it says 'Diagam Tanda Kehormation' (mispelt, it should be: Piagam Tanda Kehormatan, literally, Honorary Award). There's no Ibn 'Azeem.202.58.180.51 (talk) 07:17, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Title

Is the Emir's title really "Emir of all the Qatars" - or should this read "Emir of all the Qataris"? 38.96.137.87 (talk) 00:55, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is actually the first time I hear of any of these titles. His title is "ameer dowlat qatar" (The Emir of the State of Qatar). СЛУЖБА (talk) 13:10, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assassination?

There are rumors suggesting the emir was in fact killed in the assassination attempt on September 4, 2011. Is there any proof that he is still alive?

There are very few Western sources on the assassination attempt, which is said to have killed eight bodyguards and an American general. This article on Pravda in English is the number one result on Facebook for a search for "Qatar":

  • Konstantin Scheglikov (06.09.2011). "Qatar fighting for freedom: Fireworks show begins". Pravda. {{cite journal}}: Check date values in: |date= (help)

-- Petri Krohn (talk) 22:37, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. – This Arabic source names the dead general as "George Howard Ffucr". The same transliteration from Arabic is used in this Tunisian source in French:

Date of birth 1952

Failed to find any source giving DOB 1Jan1952, so changed it to just 1952. Will happily change it to that, or some other, specific date from reliable source. (One source gave both 1952 and 1950, but suspect the latter is a typo.)

Inaccurate statement

"He graduated from the British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1971 as a lieutenant colonel."

This statement is inaccurate. You can't "graduate from Sandhurst" as a lieutenant colonel. He may have graduated from Sandhurst, and at about the same time been appointed ( by the Qatar Government ) as a lieutenant colonel in the Qatar military, but that is two separate things.Eregli bob (talk) 03:27, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why has that not been corrected after 8 years?? Rustygecko (talk) 20:50, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Allegations of support to US designated terrorist organizations

The opening statement: "In December 2012, The New York Times accused the Qatari government of funding the Al-Nusra Front, a U.S. government designated terrorist organization." provides this citation as support: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/11/opinion/al-qaeda-in-syria.html?_r=0

There is only one part of that article that could be seen as supporting the statement and it reads: "American officials have to make a case directly to the countries or actors that are believed to be most responsible, either directly or as a conduit, for the weapons and other assistance to the Nusra Front: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan."

This is a very weak connection indeed. The second sentence is fairly weak also: "Others[who?] have noted the Emir's visit to Gaza and meeting with Hamas, which houses a militant wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.". I haven't checked the citations in any depth but at the very least this sentence needs to be reworded and moved nearer the end of the paragraph.

I propose removing both of these and starting from "In January 2013, French politicians...". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andybak (talkcontribs) 22:45, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Abdullah Bin Hamad, new Deputy Emir

One of his sons, Abdullah Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, was named "Deputy Emir" on November 11, 2014. I included that information. I suggest someone open an entry dedicated to the guy, even if just a stub.
