Loss of an eye

There is mention in the article that Taylor lost an eye at Monza in 1961. I can find no mention of this in any reference book. Taylor finished the race in 11th place 4 laps down & the race was marred by the accident involving Von Trips in which he & 13 spectators were killed. It was this which turned Taylor away from single seater racing. Eagleash (talk) 21:47, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I also can't find any reference that says he lost an eye. His profile at oldracingcars.com mentions that eyesight issues led to single-seater retirement, but his BRDC death notice suggests it was his serious accident at the 1961 British Grand Prix which turned him away from single-seaters. His obituary in The Telegraph mentions both his British GP accident and the tragedy at Monza, but nothing about him losing an eye. So I have removed the text about him losing an eye. Update: His profile at the 500 Owners Association does say that he lost the sight in one eye (which is different to "losing an eye"), but I'm inclined to seek further confirmation/clarification before putting anything about his eye/sight back into the article. Thank you, & for tidying up the heading etc. It's not impossible that Taylor had some eyesight issues after the Aintree accident, but he was back driving again at top level, some 2 months later, at Monza, arguably the most daunting track of the day, & although he moved away from single seat racing thereafter he continued to compete effectively in other forms of motorsport & in the bobsleigh team. However, I am continuing to look for information in this regard & hope to find something more concrete in due course.Eagleash (talk) 16:59, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I have received information, currently anecdotal, so not suitable for inclusion in the article, that the impact in Taylor's Aintree accident was sufficient to pressurise his blood circulation system leading to a burst blood vessel in his eye, losing the sight thereof. It is said that he kept this quiet (how?) so as to continue racing but on his return found top level GP racing to be beyond him. It may therefore be that he found the Von Trips tragedy a convenient reason to quit F1 at that time. Still looking for other references Eagleash (talk) 15:05, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds entirely feasible. Thanks for your efforts. Keep digging! DH85868993 (talk) 02:12, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
