Uncertainty over birth and death
Blueseum lists 2 dates of death, 1 Jan 1943 and 5 Aug 1921. The 1921 date seems to be more likely, as this obituary refers to him being a former captain of Carlton. Looking through Victorian birth/death/marriage records, the most likely 1943 death was actually 10 August 1943, John Alexander of Castlemaine (Aust Football has the same date). Working back to the birth records, based on his parents names in his obituary, the 1921 John Roberts was born in 1867 in Scarsdale (can't find exact date), the 1943 death was born in Newstead in 1869, as per the Blueseum and birth date here. I'll keep looking & ask the AFL for more info. The-Pope (talk) 14:44, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
