Jerry served as a radio operator on the U.S.S. Bennington during the end of WWII. He recounts recieving the end of war message while on duty and reads it to the Marines at Camp Lejeune, which was made into the album "An Officer and a Ledbetter".User:Redtires019 —Preceding undated comment added 06:30, 3 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Jerry denied the Ledbetters are fictional, he has said they are real people he knows.

  • Ok. No problem. I was under the impression that they were fictional. Feel free to change it back. Joyous | Talk 19:46, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • On one of his recordings, Jerry says most of the stories he tells really happened and the Ledbetter characters he tells about are based on real people, but "Ledbetter" wasn't their real name. There is a picture of Jerry's graduating class in the book "Ain't God Good" and the caption says Ardel and Raynell are in the photo...so that, to me, bears out that many of the Ledbetter stories really happened.

Hope that helps...db66murray

  • Clower used to say, "All of my stories are almost true." Notice he worded it. He didn't say almost all of his stories are true; he said all of his stories are almost true. In other words, he tended to embellish real-life incidents to make them funny. On other occasions, he would borrow jokes from other people and tell them as though they happened in real life. Case in point: the story about the Ledbetters saving a building that was on fire. Clower admitted he borrowed that story from Zell Miller.67.45.112.226 (talk) 12:18, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • No such place as Point Cedar, Al. Mr. Clower was speaking at the Alabama Dairy Convention in Point Clear, Al [How I Backed into Show Business][Various Recordings]--Wgmount 10:11, 3 August 2006 (UTC)wgmount[reply]

The Ledbetters are not fictional. Marcel lives in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area where he has family and friends. I know this to be a fact since I married one of his cousins from the King family right aftersub hurricane Katrina last year in Baker, LA. .. bh

Jerry's dog

Anyone remember the name of Jerry's dog and what breed was it? He talked of it often in his stories but can't remember the name, unusual looking dog. Thanx , Tim — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.10.192.201 (talkcontribs) 22:23, July 11, 2007‎ (UTC)

He frequently mentioned a number of different dogs, but the two most popular ones were "Highball" and "Brummie." Brummie was the one who treed the coon in the original coon hunting story that launched Jerry's career. If I'm recalling correctly, Highball was the dog that was so smart he stopped barking whenever he ran across posted land. Highball was ultimately killed by a train...again...if I'm remembering correctly. You may be thinking of the Catahoula Cur Dog, though. It stole a cookie and Jerry's brother wrestled it away, then put it on a fence post where the dog couldn't get it and said, "When it dries, it'll be alright." An apparent contradiction in the article...

One section of the article states, "He became a fertilizer salesman for Mississippi Chemical in 1954." The very next section states, "By 1954, Clower had developed a reputation for telling funny stories to boost his sales." This leaves me to one of two conclusions: (1) Clower developed his reputation in a very short time, or (2) the dates are incorrect.67.45.112.226 (talk) 12:22, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll check the sources. It's easy to mess up dates. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:32, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
