Unruh was elected to the 65th Assembly District in South-Central Los Angeles. After the 1960 reapportionment his district included Inglewood, part of South-Central Los Angeles City, and parts of unincorporated L.A. County in the LA Tijera area. This article needs some discussion of a quote often attributed to Unruh, but one that has many versions. Some examples:

• "If you can't take their money, drink their booze, screw their women and look them in the eye and vote against them, you don't belong here."[1]
• "If you can't take their money, drink their liquor, fuck their women, and then come in here the next day and vote against them, you don't belong here."[2]
• "If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, . . . take their money and then vote against them you've got no business being up here."[3]
• "If you can't take what the lobbyists offer and still vote against them, you don't belong here."[4]
• "If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women, take their money, and then vote against them, you've got no business being here."[5]
• "If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women, take their money, and then vote against them, you've got no business being here."[6]
• "If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women and then vote against them, you have no business being up here."[7]
• "If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women, take their money and then vote against them, you don't belong up here."[8]
