Captain John Fearn was a British mariner but did not command British South Sea whalers. There are reference books and a web site that list whaling masters and he is not in them). Rather he was a trading master who was in charge of the snow Hunter that arrived at Port Jackson in June 1798 with an assorted cargo of goods from India. The vessel departed Sydney in August for India via New Zealand. (John Cumpston, (1977) Shipping arrivals & departures Sydney, 1788-1825, Canberra, p.33). So this page should probably be renamed John Fearn (mariner). (
