I was wondering if:

  • Any way to section this list into separately editable sections, since this list is getting so big? (Haven't found any related templates yet.)
  • Want to collaborate & divvy out who does 3di's from which primary interstate? So far I have done (hopefully completely) the 3dis for many interstates involving western states, Texas, and some Midwestern states (and others I'd "call'em as I see 'em?")

I-805

Isn't the 805 a connector between I-5 and I-8 and hence the name? (I know the Interstate system relies on the list two digits for the main Interstate it associates with, but I think there could be a mention of I-8 here.) RickK 00:50, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)

A couple notes

We should link to the pages for the Interstates. I've been working on separating them into pages (which I've done for the I-95 spurs). So we should link to [[I-295 (FL)|]] for instance, and if necessary put up a temporary redirect to the main page.

Unbuilt Interstates and old numbers should be included, but we need a line to keep stuff like I-102 out. I propose the following:

  1. Don't list it if it was renumbered by 1959, when the routes were signed.
  2. Don't list anything that was quickly renumbered, UNLESS the number was used by non-internal sources (like newspapers).

This goes without saying, but no I-394 (MI), no I-875 (MI), etc.

I think we should sort the states by order served along the parent, from south to north and west to east. Maybe sort the 3DIs by where they spur from the parent. --SPUI (talk) 22:42, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Significance?

What is the significance of three-digit highways? Why have a list of these, separate from other highways? The introduction to this article should address these questions. I suspect three-digit highways are different from regular highways in some way ... dbenbenn | talk 09:54, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi! I've been wroking on remaking the table and try to make it look neater. I want to hear what you all think about it, and if you think it's better than the current table. So here is a sample on Interstate 5...

Well it's the same standard coloring used in Interstate infoboxes. The colors are what separates the Interstates into its proper categories. Also, I don't know if I made any font size bigger, but it's been that way. In fact, I made the fonts for the states smaller. I want to hear more people's opinions, though...

So if I were to make the text smaller, what whould you still think about the remake?
Also, I put colors on the current table signifying an unsigned or future auxiliary route. I think it should have different colors; one that sticks out less. (Right now, I can't find such color.)

If another reason is needed to not add colors to the list, consider this: with little extra code in the existing list, the size of the page is a painfully large 105KB, which takes forever to load as it is. It's only 105KB based on the amount of characters in the text area on the editing page of the article. It would greatly reduce the number of characters if we use templates to shorten up the coding.
Just for the record, I like articles over 100KB. :) Besides, there are so many lists larger than this one. You can always try
List of terrorist attacks (over 200KB).

That doesn't give this list permission to be gigantic. My guess is that some users that click on this list probably cancel loading due to the huge load time for the page. I do, anyway. Because of the hefty size, I really don't find the current list, or the proposed "remake" above, useful, tbh. If I want to find an auxiliary Interstate, I'll just use the state highway lists by state, which often include interstates in that state. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 03:44, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

And, if you really believe that this list is extraneous and you use the Interstate Highways list, why was this page created in the first place? More importantly, who started with the table to organize the information? (Yes, I know, I finished the table when it was half-way completed.) Few more questions that some people would want to figure out.

Well to me, nothing's wrong, really. I'll just stay on with the current list. Something sparked me an idea of a new table, and I wanted to see if editors find it acceptable. For now, I'm guessing it's a no.
However, there is another problem when I tinkered with the code on the list. I included additional colors in the current list, and as I mentioned above, someone should replace the colors and find the ones that don't stick out so much.

"I-38 does not exist..."

Hey all -- Since Interstate 38 does not exist, I recommend that I-238 be listed under heading "Other" or "Orphan."

I agree with the move idea and have done so

WP:BOLDly... Interstate 38 doesn't exist and listing it would just confuse people. 238 should be listed in a section describing what it is, an exception. It's not a typical 3DI but neither is it a primary interstate.Gateman1997

Only issue I'd have with that is strictly speaking I-238 is a not an auxiliary interstate of I-80 either. If they'd intended it to be they easily could have changed the number in recent years to 480 but they've yet to do so which seems to me to indicate they do not intend it to be an aux of 80. Interstate 870

It was floated around during the 1980s as I-255 was under construction in Illinois but it was not used. There was quite a bit of public comment on the I-270 Draft EIS that was made in the early 1980s. Kimmy78 (talk) 03:55, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Page edit hits 60-second timeout

In October 2013, several people studied the long reformat time of "List of auxiliary Interstate Highways" which often exceeds the 60-second timeout limit and hits "504 Gateway" error or "wp:Wikimedia Foundation error" (8 times during editing on 27 October 2013). There are 3 major templates used over 100x times:

However, the total time is still over 26 seconds and risks a timeout on slow servers, unless reduced closer to 20 seconds or below. If many road names were changed to simple wikilinks, to avoid {roadlink...}, then the edit-preview time could be faster. -Wikid77 (talk) 23:43, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Conversion to templates

This table should be converted to use the templates from

WP:USRD/STDS/L. In the process, the gray color will be switched from unsigned highways to former highways. In the interim, I updated the color key to indicate that the gray color is for former highways. In the future, unsigned highways should be noted with a note, the lack of a shield, or both. The table has been converted to use the templates. In the process, the
List of unsigned auxiliary Interstate Highways
were both merged in. In the latter case, all of the entries were present already. In the former, that list was out of date, and only a few entries had to be moved over. Since most of the future 3dIs were already here, there was no need to maintain parallel lists and let them get further out of sync.
In the process, a few former 3dIs that weren't listed have been added, restoring I-164 back into its proper place on this list. The table is incomplete. I will list the cleanup tasks in another section. Imzadi 1979  07:54, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Table clean up

The following needs to be done:

  • Dates need to be added.
  • Lengths should be double checked against the most recent FHWA Route Log and Finder List, and they should be updated so every entry possible has a length to 2 decimal places.
    • In doing so, I-275 in Michigan will need it's official MDOT length added as a note because FHWA's length does not match what the signs and maps show.
  • Cities need to be cleaned up so that have state names We can display the postal abbreviations to conserve space in the table.
  • Now that the table is sortable and lacking section headers for each 2dI and faux headers for the states, we need to make sure that each line of the table is linking to the connecting highways.
    • In linking to other highways, we really should be bypassing redirects so that non-American readers can hover their cursors over the abbreviations to get full names.

You'll note that I mention bypassing redirects and piping links. In the first line of the table, we we link "H-1" to "Interstate H-1", so if a reader is confused by the "H-1" abbreviation, he or she can hover his/her cursor over the link and a tooltip will display with the full name, "Interstate H-1". If that same reader attempts to do the same with "SR 1" in the next line, he or she will be greeted with a cryptic "SR 1 (CA)". We assume our readers will know that "SR 1" equals "State Route 1", and that they will know "CA" equals "California", but that is not a valid assumption to make on a global publication like Wikipedia. However, if we link to "California State Route 1", that is a useful expansion of the abbreviation. We're also missing state names in this initial conversion, so they need to be added. For similar reasons as the highway designation abbreviations, if we pipe a link to "El Segundo, California" so that it appears as "El Segundo, CA", readers can use the tool tips if they are not familiar with the various state postal codes. Couple Unrelated Questions

  1. For Interstates under construction, should the finished length or current length be put underneath the length column? For example, Interstate 369 in Texas has a current length of 3.50 miles. Should we put 3.50 miles under the length column, or should we put the finished distance, which would most likely be much longer?
  2. Interstate 265 is considered a single Interstate, even though it has two separate segments in both Kentucky and Indiana. Should this be in two separate columns (like it currently is), or be merged into one single column? Will211 (talk) 07:03, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

  1. I've updated all of the lengths in the table off the most recent FHWA Route Log and Finder List and cited entries in the table that do not appear in that document. I would go with the current length open to traffic, which is what FHWA would list. If necessary, we need to add explicit citations in a |length_ref= for specific rows of the table.
  2. For the moment, I'd leave them separate until they merge together.

I-164 request

Technically I-164 still is designated in IN, all but 0.69 miles were taken by I-69 (coincidentally). I updated to reflect that but was having trouble including the reference for the change new mileage because I'm no Wikipro. Here's the info from the I-164 page Dozier, Daniel A. (September 5, 2013). Why we only need 3 examples?

FHWA site redesign

Some pages on the FHWA website have been moved. For example, http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/reports/routefinder/index.cfm#s09 has moved to https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/interstate_highway_system/routefinder/index.cfm#s09 I have made the change in this article, but editors revising individual highway articles should check all FHWA links on the page of interest to see if they have moved. List sorting

I'd like to propose changing the sorting of this list from strictly geographic to numerical then geographical. It makes no sense to me that

Where is Interstate 214?
