What's the difference between unionist and "Pro-unionist"? Bob A (talk) 20:38, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the table at the top, the ideology of Labour is defined as 'centre to centre-right'. This is not consistent with the article later which describes it as centre-left social democratic. It is not consistent with the article on Scottish Labour either. I'm going to go ahead and change it. User:SamUK 12:32, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There appears to be something of an edit war going on with this at the moment. Given that Labour have historically been a centre-left party (and clear still wish to see themselves in this way), but observers without a particular dog in the fight (such as political compass) recognise that they are now centre-right in policy and direction, the article should reflect this - centre-right in the box, describing the historical position and movement in the body? The "Scottish" Labour Party (UK) is NOT a registered political party in the UK Electoral Commission list, nor does this name appear on any ballot. It is a fiscal unit of The Labour Party (UK)

Why aren't the Scottish Greens mentioned here? They're one of the larger minor parties.

It should be noted that other than the European elections a few years ago, which tend to have a low turnout, and UKIP made a point of mobilising support, they have performed abysmally in Scottish elections. To date, they have lost their deposit in every seat contested for the Westminster elections, barely scraping a couple of percent. In fact only TWO parties operating in Scottish parliament (2018) are actually Registered Parties with UK Electoral Commission: Scottish Greens and Scottish National Party (the third, the Scottish Socialist Party, currently has no seats in Scotland)

UNREGISTERED PARTIES operating in Scotland:

The remaining THREE parties, all unionist, are NOT Registered under the names they prefer to use in Scotland. The "Scottish" Conservative & Unionist Party (UK) does not appear on any ballot, only its UK name. The "Scottish" Labour Party (UK) does not appear on any ballot, only the UK name. The "Scottish" Liberal Democrats" does not appear on any ballot, only the UK name.

Of the five parties in the "major parties" table, only two are actually parties (those being the Scottish National Party and the Scottish Green Party). When you get a ballot paper in Scotland, the "Scottish Labour Party," the "Scottish Conservative" or the "Scottish Liberal Democrats," but instead just they're UK counterparts. However, the page makes no citation to this, except for saying at two points "like the wider Labour/Conservative party." It does mention briefly that the Scottish Liberal Democrats are part of the UK Liberal Democrats. In the "Main Political Parties" section, I can mention these things, but I would also suggest having two tables in the first section of the page (the "Major Parties" section), each with it's own sub-section. I wonder if it Would it be worth denoting those that had representation at Westminster and Holyrood? For instance the Communist Party of Great Britain returned 2 MPs in Scotland, the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party had an MSP. As an additional point I have added Oswald Mosley's New Party as it ran multiple candidates in Scotland in the 1931 general election including Robert Forgan who was the incumbent MP for West Renfrewshire and a founder member of that party having defected from Labour. I also wonder about adding the British Union of Fascists which was active in Scotland and for a period included figures like Forgan? Dunarc (talk) 21:03, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My view is that adding election history for defunct parties is unnecessary and would clutter the list too much. I feel like that sort of info should be on the party page rather than on this one. PelicanPrize (talk) 11:47, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, my concern was more that at the moment you have no distinction between say the Unionist Party, which at one time had a majority of Scottish seats at Westminster, and Labour Party of Scotland, which came 5th in a by-election, and polled a tiny total in a few council wards, in Dundee in 1973. It makes sense to me to show how many seats each active party has because that's the only objective way to distinguish between the major parties and minor ones. But it seems a bit pointless trying to introduce a sort of order of precedence for parties that ultimately are all equally defunct. PelicanPrize (talk) 11:39, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
