When we invented the technique in 1984 we discussed a number of alternative suggestions for the name.

Optical dating won out because of its simplicity and elegance. As inventors, we hope that others will recognize our priority in this matter. As well, I should point out that some people have used OSL in a restrictive way, not including all the variations that optical dating encompasses. D.J.Huntley

OK - I incorporated a modified explanatory para. from the OSL article and made it a redirect. Hopefully I haven't added anything incorrect. The article as it was was rather confusing for someone not familiar with the technique. Don't know much about the priority issue - just seems that OSL is a more descriptive name to me. I disagree with the merger and agree with Wdfarmer above. While OSL is used for dating, a far more common use and commercially much larger is the use as a dosimeter. This technology is replacing TLDs for radiation protection and medical dosimetry. Ssapareto (talk) 16:57, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
