I tried to add form and function to the srticle as it was pretty sparse for such a valuable Canadian writer. I was having 'technical difficulties' saving some edits, so I may have just duplicated some edits. Banned books

I edited out this line which was written at the bottom of the Bibliography section:

Some of her works, in particular, A Jest of God, The Stone Angel, and The Diviners, have been banned by some school boards and high schools based on religious objections.

This is too vague and thus misleading. In fact, her works are so widely used in schools that the few attempts to ban their use is thus so noteworthy. I know some boards had debates, one near Peterborough, but forget the specifics now. I think someone should look up where the banning controverseies took place and re-add it in the body of the article and not as a postscript to a List of Works section.--Mikerussell 04:43, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in full agreement with Mikerussell and will question the use of the word "banned". I have a vague memory that there was some call to remove this title as course material, but very much doubt that any school or schoolboard removed the novel from libraries and prohibited copies from being brought into their respective buildings. McClelland and Stewart- the Canadian publisher

I readded the reference to M&S being 'famous' and 'the' Canadian publisher. Is there any other fiction publisher with their own Canada Post commerative stamp? Thus 'famous' is apt. Before M&S, it is not an exagerration to say, there was no such thing as a Canadian fiction publisher, nor a Canadian Literature, or even Canadian novelist. M&S was the first to survive as an economic viable publisher publishing Canadian writers, not British or American books plus a few Canadian titles. It predates CanCon legislation too, and thus deserves to be accurately recognized as a special publisher, historically significant, compared to the others that followed and still struggle on today.--Mikerussell 04:44, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you'll find that my edit had nothing to do with whether or not M&S is famous - in fact, no such claim was made - rather the description that it was "the Canadian publisher". Massey College at U of T

Is it worth mentioning that back in, I think (as I recall from my days at U of T) the 1970s Margaret Laurence was attached to Massey and spent a great deal of time with students consulting her there? Is it not appropriate to mention the severe trauma the campaign against her book The Diviners and on her personally had on Margaret Laurence? Margaret Atwood has described both herself and Alice Munro visiting Laurence and finding her having succumbed to a severe episode of alcohol abuse. Masalai (talk)
