Immediate parents

We all know the National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox are eventual parent organisations of National Geographic Partners, but which companies within the former two are the immediate parents?

Well, the documents (especially full accounts) filed to the Companies House UK by NGC UK HOLDINGS COMPANY LIMITED and NGC OVERSEAS HOLDINGS LIMITED seem to suggest something. While the documents from each company provide limited information about ownership, when the two are combined, we can find what are the immediate parents of National Geographic Partners.

  • Fox Entertainment Group, Inc. (73.2%) and NGT, Inc. (d/b/a National Geographic Television; 26.8%)
    • National Geographic Partners, LLC.
      • (some steps)
        • NGC Network Latin America LLC. (53.68%) and NGC Network International LLC. (46.32%)
          • NGC Network UK Holdco LLC.
            • NGC UK Holdings Company Limited
              • NGC Overseas Holdings Limited

In Company Infobox:

Background

National Geographic Partners, LLC is a joint venture of The Walt Disney Company (which owns 73% of shares) and the namesake non-profit scientific organization National Geographic Society (which owns 27%). The company oversees all commercial activities related to the Society, including magazine publications and television channels.[1]

The joint venture was established in 2015, but the National Geographic Society's relationship with 21st Century Fox goes as far as back to late 1990s, when the original News Corporation (which 21st Century Fox is one of the successors) launched National Geographic Channel (now simply branded as National Geographic) in Asia and Europe, in partnership with the Society. The U.S. domestic version of the channel was launched in 2001.[2]

Later Developments

Following the acquisition, National Geographic Partners channels became part of Walt Disney Television unit; with Gary Knell, Chairman of National Geographic Partners, reporting directly to the Walt Disney Television chairman, Peter Rice. Disney officially closed the deal on March 20, 2019.[3]

Awards

National Geographic’s documentary “

BAFTA for Best Documentary[7] and has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[8]

In 2019, National Geographic received seven nominations for the National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media[9] and won for General Excellent, News, Sports and Entertainment.[10]

National Geographic dedicated its January 2017 issue of the magazine to gender.[11] In 2017, National Geographic was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Explanatory Reporting “For a deep and sensitive exploration of gender worldwide, using remarkable photography, moving video and clear writing to illuminate a subject that is at once familiar and misunderstood.”[12]

In 2018, National Geographic was named the first

Webby Media Company of the Year.[13] The award recognizes the most successful media company across all Webby categories.[14]

In 2018,

Nat Geo WILD earned a combined 18 Emmy nominations, a record for the company.[15]

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using

Citation Style 1

Citation Style 1 formatting:

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc., all information which is lost when only the links are provided. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly rewrite your edit request so that it aligns more with the second example shown in the collapsed section above, and feel free to re-submit that edit request at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor. Regards,  Spintendo  22:23, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ The fault for this formatting error may have originated with the automated prompts used by the edit request template, which asks for a COI editor to "supply the URL of any references used". While the resulting omission of information would not be the fault of the requesting COI editor, it nevertheless remains their responsibility to supply the references formatted in the style used by the article.
  2. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

References

  1. ^ "WP:CITEVAR - Wikipedia:Citing sources". Wikipedia. 20 October 2018. Retrieved 22 October 2018. Guideline: It is normal practice to defer to the style used by the first major contributor or adopted by the consensus of editors already working on the page, unless a change in consensus has been achieved. If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it.

  1. The lead section's WikiLink to Walt Disney Television updated to
    Walt Disney Company
    .
  2. The article already states that the position of Chairman of National Geographic Partners reports directly to the Walt Disney Television chairman. The specifics of who occupies these positions is not the point — that one position reports to the other is. In due time, reports of those occupying those roles may become irrelevant when the individuals in those positions are replaced, whereas the roles themselves will go on.
  3. The individual Webby Award categories and the individual Emmy nominations and/or win categories should be delineated for clarity. It should also be clarified if the winner was designated as National Geographic Partners per se, or if any relevant subsidiaries were the direct recipients of these nominations/awards.

plus Additional changes made:

  1. The Background and History sections were merged.
  2. Information on staff reductions, i.e., the basic claim "National Geographic and First Century Fox announced that 9 percent of National Geographic's 2,000 employees, approximately 180 people, would be laid off", was retained. Additional claims which utilized mis-referenced quoted material

Thank you,  Spintendo  for the updates and feedback.

The infobox box should be updated to The Walt Disney Company as owner to be consistent. A link can be added to Gary Knell.

Feedback: The article states: the president of the National Geographic Partners reporting directly to the Walt Disney Television chairman. But the title is incorrect. Gary Knell is the chairman of National Geographic Partners.

Proposed Additions

Disclosure: I work for National Geographic Partners. I would like to improve the factual accuracy of this page and add more information.

Under Television channels, the description of National Geographic should be updated. The channel airs all types of non-fiction programming, not just documentaries, as shown in the

National Geographic (TV network)
article.

TO ADD:

On January 13, 2017, National Geographic announced the launch of National Geographic Documentary Films.

LA 92[5] and From the Ashes.[6] On March 4, 2019, National Geographic Documentary Films announced it will release a documentary about the Tham Luang cave rescue.[7]

Disney+

Content from National Geographic will be available on Disney+, an upcoming subscription streaming service.[8] National Geographic is producing two non-fiction series for the platform: The World According to Jeff Goldblum[9] and Magic of the Animal Kingdom.[10]

Thank you for your feedback, Spintendo. I disagree that the claims are announcements of future state-of-affairs or events. For National Geographic Documentary Films, all of the films have already been released, as shown by the citations. For Disney+, the programs have been announced and are listed on the Disney+ page.

If the claims involve items which have occurred, then the phrasing needs to be reworded to signify this. The phrasing currently used in your proposal is thus:

  1. "On March 4, 2019, National Geographic Documentary Films announced it will release a documentary about the Tham Luang cave rescue."
  2. "Content from National Geographic will be available on Disney+, an upcoming subscription streaming service. National Geographic is producing two non-fiction series for the platform: The World According to Jeff Goldblum and Magic of the Animal Kingdom."[a]
