Rails-to-trails project

As I understand it, the Port of Tillamook Bay has approved converting the rail line through Salmonberry Canyon, parts of which were destroyed by mudslides in 2007, into a trail, which would presumably permanently sever the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad from the rest of the national railroad system. The rails-to-trails project will take many years–perhaps decades–to do, and might itself never be completed, depending on funding. In any case, the last train has almost certainly been seen in the canyon.
