It is embarrassing that this monstrosity is named after the Queen. If it were named after me I would feel angry and insulted. It should be renamed to something suitably dull - though only as a temporary measure pre-demolition. Luwilt (talk) 01:40, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not named after the Queen, the current Queen is Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth was the Queen Mother, who is sadly now deceased and can do little about this turd being named in her honour. I think everyone and their dog just wishes they had spent the original 1950's money on rebuilding Queen's Hall on Regents Street rather than on the RFH, a daft festival of Britain and yet more ugly Southbank buildings in the 60's and 70's.

In terms of the undercroft the Government did not save it, if you read the Time Out Article, the Government merely said the Southbank Centre is an independent arts centre (thus nothing to do with them) and makes it's own decisions on such matters, however the Government supports activities for young people. The Undercroft may still be redveoped, indeed this building may yet be demolished as it has been turned down for listing on a number of occasions by succesive Governments, and can not re-apply for listed status in the foreseable future.

Personally I would welcome a new concert hall for London, perhaps the rebuilding of the Old Queens Hall or new hall in a beautiful location such as near to Regents Park. If a decent Hall was built in London with decent acoustic, there would be no need for music lovers to visit either the Barbican Centre (a fan shaped hall, with no organ) or the Southbank Centre which has both the Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, neither of which is up to scratch.

The ideal solution would be to build a proper new Concert Hall with proper acoustics away from these ugly arts centres and then cut off their public money. Let the skateboarders and tramps have the brutalist Southbank and move the music to a new location, one which we can be proud of. If the World Monument Fund want to pay for the Southbanks upkeep let them, I am not bothered as long as the public money stops.
