I am told by a Hungarian friend of mine that now the custom is disdained amongst the youth, exactly because it was said to last 150 years, which depending on how you measure it is now over. Completely OR, of course. Si Trew (talk) 23:49, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There was no such thing it's just a legend, but a very stubborn one. It began shortly after the conciliation between the Habsburg House and the Hungarians in 1867, when the population started to drink more beer and less wine, therefore some cunning hungarian wine merchants started to spread this rumour in the hope of getting back their clientele. Btw most of the Austrian generals were born in noble families, and during the 19th century (just like today) when men of the higher classes were celebrating something, they drank champagne, not beer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neozsivany (talk • contribs) 22:12, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
