DCNR pages

Hi Dinch, Looks like I am the first post-archive to leave a message here. I do think they are adding more info to some of the DCNR park pages - checking things as we update articles it seems as if a lot of parks now have the area in the intro and not hidden deep in the text like before (if at all), so I think they are updating them somewhat (and relatively slowly). Game notes

Hey, saw your recent edit to 2007 Penn State Nittany Lions football team that added the game notes section. I'm not sure if you saw, but that page already had code for game notes on it, albeit without the seealso links. The game notes were just commented out in the source with instructions to uncomment as each game took place. Dunno how you want to handle it, but I think I like the original author's idea to not include the entire season worth of game notes until they've all taken place. -- Billma 23:28, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hi Dinch, thanks for the congrats on Plunketts Creek, for asking me to write it in the first place, and for finding the missing "s" in the article. I found a bit more info on it and will add some more over the next few days, plus I have a few more possible sources of info to track down. I think the White Clay Creek photo is free as it is US Government (National Park Service). I could not find any more info on the second pic and I think the default assumption is that it needs a free source (government, older than a ceratin age) or an explicit free license, or else it is not free to use. I could not get the third pic to show up at all on Flickr. I may try to use Google Image to look for more, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:57, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I never thought any image of Benjy Rush would be found - woohoo! Great find. Also like the Norristown Farm Park pic. I uploaded the National Park Service image of White Clay Creek to Commons (as Image:Trout fishing on White Clay Creek.jpg) and will add it to the parks next (PA and DE). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Glad you like the LL pic - I have a few others to upload, but am trying to decide which game closeup is best (the one with the most player action has a spectator kid walking into the picture in the foreground that I can't edit or crop out). I found a picture of
Fourteen Mile Island, Allegheny River, which together make up Allegheny Islands State Park, so I have to update that article. Also found out some more on Plunketts Creek looking through old newspaper microfilms, so more to work on there. Ruhrfisch ><>°°
      03:14, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

I think Little Pine SP would be the best possibility for a Lycoming County SP GA. Still thinking of others. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:20, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Merges

Hi Dinch, I thought about it some more and am now fine with merging both island articles into Allegheny Islands State Park. I updated the merge comment on the park talk page to relect my change of mind too. I think the same editor started both island articles, so maybe we should leave a note on his/her talk page and wait a few days, then merge them and leave as redirects. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:45, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I left a message on the talk page of the original creator of the articles, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:53, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Boyd Big Tree

You can find it on the PennDOT Dauphin County map (which is linked on the park's article page). I could not find it in GNIS either - I will sometimes enter just the first part of the name, but couldn't find it under Boyd or Big Tree or Boyd Big Tree. Some other parks do not have GNIS entries either - Bucktail does not, nor does Allegheny Islands. I have had good results contacting the USGS, so I will let them know about these and would be glad to pass along any others we find. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:17, 27 August 2007 (UTC) I just looked at the PennDOT map and the Google Earth photos and the dot looks like it is in the park. The dot has an elevation of about 920 feet (according to Google Earth). If I contact them tomorrow, my guess is that USGS GNIS will have coordinates and an elevation in their database in a few days. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:29, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Worlds End

Hi Dinch, I would expand the lead paragraphs a little, so they reflect the contents of the article. The idea (as I understand it) is to include in the lead everything that is mentioned in a header or subheader. Also everything in the lead should also be in the text of the article. I would try to convert all the references into inline citations. I also have some ideas for extra refs, but will look the article over carefully and then write more here. Looks good so far, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:00, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Here are some more ideas. The basic idea is to add more info in some cases and more refs. I will add more as the night goes one, but here's three more refs for now:
  • I would add in the information from the Audubon Guide about the birds etc in the park and surrounding state forest. Here's the link in cite web format:

Audubon Pennsylvania. Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail (Searchable database). Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Retrieved 2008-08-28. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |coauthors= ignored (|author= suggested) (help); Unknown parameter |origdate= ignored (|orig-date= suggested) (help) Note: The guide refers to Wyoming State Forest, which has been reorganized as Loyalsock State Forest
.

  • From Gertler's Keystone Canoeing (use as much of the quote or paraphrase as you see it): Loyalsock Creek's "...exciting whitewater, above Forksville, has long been a favorite of paddlers who are quick and tolerant enough to endure its fickle water levels and weather. Likewise, an annual early Spring slalom race held at Worlds End State Park has attracted similarly hardy constestants since the 1960's." (page 295) and "...long, steepening, and complex boulder patch and ledgy rapids demand your attention. In a classic pattern, the best whitewater is usually on bends away from the road. A boater's chute through the middle of the swimming area dam at Worlds End State Park climaxes this run." The whitewater gradient is 41, the class of Whitewater is 2 to 3+, 4. Gertler, Edward. Keystone Canoeing: A Guide to Canoeable Waters of Eastern Pennsylvania (1st Edition ed.).

    )
  • Precipitation and Acid Rain ref, possible sentences: The mean annual
precipitation for Loyalsock Creek is 42 to 48 inches (1067 to 1219 mm). Shaw, Lewis C. Pennsylvania Gazetteer of Streams Part II (Water Resources Bulletin No. 16). Prepared in Cooperation with the United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey (1st Edition ed.). Harrisburg, PA: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Resources (no ISBN). {{cite book}}: |edition= has extra text (help); Unknown parameter |origdate= ignored (|orig-date= suggested) (help) Pennsylvania receives the most acid rain of any state in the United States. Because Loyalsock Creek is in a sandstone, shale, conglomerates, coal, and limestone mountain region, it has a relatively low capacity to neutralize added acid. This makes it especially vulnerable to increased acidification from acid rain, which poses a threat to the long term health of the plants and animals in the creek. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

    • I have one more surprise - something I found in a newspaper looking for Plunketts Creek info, but will add that to the article directly. Also did some copyedits on it - think it is about ready to go to GAC. Good luck, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:42, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
      • Thanks so much for listing me as a co-nominator - I think it should be your baby, but am glad to help. Looks like everything on the nom is fine. I might try tweaking the lead paragraphs (the name is not mentioned). Also look at the Audubon Guide and see if any birds and animals listed there need to be added to the article. My guess is it will take a week, they might also have comments / things that need to be addressed. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
        • I will work on the lead later today - quite busy now, will also double check my notes on the other typo below (I think it is OK to correct it though). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:11, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
          • Sorry, didn't get to it today or tonight, will work on it tomorrow (need a bigger block of time to think that I had all day). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:28, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) I rewrote the lead paragraphs, taking the inline cites out (moved them into the text). I also did some rearranging of the text and fixed a ref ("wesphistory" was for CCC history, now they are two separate refs - is this OK?). I will not look at it for a day or two, then take a fresh look (unless there are things you want me to look at). Oh, plus I was going to look for more images from my pix. Have a good one, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:04, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

  • WOOOHOOOO!!!!! Great news and well deserved - now there's only 119 to go ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:40, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
    • You are very welcome - he is supposed to be wearng a Good Article medal, not a target (though he is of course safe in all state parks from target practice and hunting). Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:36, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Worlds End State Park typos

The two I have found are mispronounciation and constestants. The first might be in the actual quote since it's a common (mis)spelling, but I suspect the second is a real typo. However, I can't get at the refs to verify that. Hope you have better luck. (Copied to your talk page.) Michael Devore 04:05, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Map

Thanks - it was a lot of work. I used the DCNR map at the maximum size it would fit into my screen (36.1%), then did Print Screen and pasted it into my trusty Paint program. Then I erased everything that wasn't state forest (or Worlds End SP) and added the county borders in as thick red lines. Then I shrank it by trial and error (18%) until the red lines lined up with the county borders on the PA locator map. Then I pasted in the good county lines over the red lines. Then I went in and colored the SF land red by hand. Erasing carefully and coloring red took the most time. I think it may take me a while to do all 20, although I learned some tricks that will speed things up next time. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

I did it and I am still not 100% sure how ;-). I tried coloring the one tract a solid color before shrinking, but left the others the original colors then made them red after shrinking. I think in the future it is easier to color before shrinking. I also will erase near the county's borders, then put the red lines in (as I had to erase around the red lines which took more effort). I am glad you like it - had I done all that work and it did not turn out, that would have been bad. For no particlular reason I will now quote: Licensed to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations (but not in Pennsylvania state parks)! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:24, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Glad you like the newest map. I am working on some more, but it will take some time. Found out that "Kittanning State Forest" is now Clear Creek State Forest - no confusion with Clear Creek State Park there. Doing those changes was my work for the evening. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:23, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Cape Henlopen State Park and PA state forests

How about DYK ...that Cape Henlopen State Park (pictured) in Delaware has been public land since William Penn designated it as such in 1682, yet only became a state park in 1964? I tried to fit the WWII fort in too, but it just didn't fit somehow. Some nice pictures there too - I would use Image:Herringpoint.JPG in the DYK nom. I agree that Clear Creek as a new name makes no sense given WIlliam Penn as a new name. Also wish they would convert State Game Lands into state forest tracts there. Oh well. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:18, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Good luck - maybe we should form some State Parks Wikiproject? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:09, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

      • Sounds fine to me - my sole contribution is to add two commas: DYK...that Fort Delaware State Park, once a Civil War POW camp, is now home to one of the largest heronries north of Florida? The state of Delaware thanks you ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:10, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
        • I added commas and the {{acre to km2}} template to Fort Henlopen. I missed the {{convert}} question before - I think it is being phased out in favor of individual templates like {{mi to km}}, {{ft to m}}, etc. Let me know and I will add commas (and templates if you want examples) to Fort Delaware. Here are some spare commas for your use: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I have more if you need them ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:27, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

And again, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:09, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I always used the lat and long distance calculator, as I don't have a great map for state parks outside of PA. By the way, I found the searchable IUCN database and some of the PA state parks that are in the database are listed as IUCN II (National Park!?!). Here is the link. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:30, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Very minor tweak - one word, a date, and, of course, some commas: DYK...that Fox Point State Park, a Delaware State Park along the Delaware River, was built atop a hazardous waste Superfund site, opening in 1995? Glad you like the IUCN website, even if I don't understand why some state parks are IUCN II. Take care, not sure how much else I will get done here tonight. New Geobox

Glad you caught that too - I had network problems much of the evening, but should get a new panorama up today or tomorrow - I think you will like it. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:19, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Glad you like it - I also added it to Northumberland, Pennsylvania and West Branch Susquehanna River. It was much cloudier most of the the time we were there, but started to clear up. We also went to the Marina unit and I got a few pics there and of some other sights in Northumberland. Of course as we left, the sun was out and there were few clouds, but I think the panorama with clouds is OK. I will add them to Commons and do a Commonscat. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:57, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
    • I did some copyedits on it - the first ref mentions the Superfund arm of the Delaware govt doing some of the work, so I think I read that and thought it was a Superfund site and suggested that. Looks OK to me. I can leave an explanation at the nom if you think that would help. Did not get to improving Plunketts Creek here this weekend after all, though I have it mapped out mentally and notes on paper. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:01, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
      • I put one there last night after my copyedits and message to you - let me know if it is not clear enough (the above note is more detailed). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:35, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

          • I added a pic to Joseph Priestley House (just took it this weekend) which is now a stub. I plan to expand it next (with hopes of a DYK). • I saw it in the DYK next update queue first (as it was missing from the nominations page), but didn't want to jinx you by an early congrats. I don't know of a statue of Shikellamy - there are often weird restrictions on photos of statues because the statue is usually a copyrighted work of art. If you find one, let me know and I will see if I can get a picture of it at some point. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:59, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
    • I did not see a statue at the park, but I also did not see a park map posted there or even an explantion of who Shikellamy was. Shikellamy HS is perhaps doable, I would love to make a pilgrimage to Womelsdorf and see Weiser's homestead, but it will be a while. My guess is that the statue at Weiser's would be older and more likely to be out of copyright issues. I am almost done with Plunketts Creek for submission to Peer Review. When it is ready (or whenever) any comments would be welcome - I am getting saturated with it, but am amazed at how much info I could find on a truly small stream. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 10:55, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Sorry again about Penn State. Glad to nominate OLP - if you read Choess' talk page, I found a ref to anthrax at the Proctor tannery back in 1897. I see List of municipalities in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania is in article space now - cool! I know I still owe you some redlinks and the history section. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:34, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
I think it could be FL with a little work - looks good already. Forgot to say that I made a stub for Masten last night. List

I see you found the pictures I uploaded - thanks again for the infoboxes. What would you think of a little map for each place in the Lycoming Co list? Also I was wondering about making the footnotes in the column header for the ones that have the same ref for all the entries (like ref 1). I added the villages to the townships on the county page a long time ago - would that be OK as comments for twps? I was going to work on the list some tonight too unless you were planning to. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to be unclear - I meant that I would add a tiny county locator map to each entry (like the List of counties in Kentucky article does). I also was going to see if I could make a large map at the bottom that would have the names of the boroughs and twps and city wikilinked. Finally, what I meant with the column was that instead of every entry having a ref to Meginness, why not just have one ref to Meginness in the top of that column? We had to take out a lot of ref for the state parks list, so that is what I though to do here. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:45, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Larrys and the List

Would you mind taking a look at Larrys Creek and see if there is anything that needs to be fixed or updated? I plan to add more pictures to Commons and do Commonscat, switch to Geobox 2 (like Plunketts Creek now), that can have the PA locator map so I will add that for the mouth (dot), I plan to do the ref italics and quotes like Plunketts Creek, there are some maps I want to add as references (State Game Lands and the "Map 61" sections for detailed Geology, again thanks to Plunketts), and I am seriously thinking of taking {{convert}} out (it is not in Plunketts) as the article loads slowly (switching Geoboxes will help speed it up too). I also need to write the covered bridge article (I already have the DYK hook) and am thinking of a Larrys Creek tributaries list article if I have time. Woohoo.

Forgot to metion before - I think the list would be ready to go to Peer Review as that can take a few weeks and LC will be on the Main Page in 9 days. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:38, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Do you want to submit it to PR or do you want me to? I added some pictures after the parks list model and reorganized the text a bit. The Commonscat is up on Larrys. If possible I want to drive it and get some more pics, the mouth, a sawmill (there are two on 287), the helipad, maybe the lodge for the hunting club, an agricultural shot, and the source if possible. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:43, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I was bold and nominated it: Wikipedia:Peer review/List of municipalities in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:11, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Glad to do it - So far Michael Devore fixed some typos in the list, but no actual comments - I will run the auto PR script on it as AZPR in a bit. I am slowly fixing minor Larrys Creek issues. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:45, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks so much for looking at
Plunketts Creek (Loyalsock Creek) and see how long it takes to load in comparison? It is a similar sized article, but has the supposedly faster loading Geobox 2 and no convert templates. I think I have mentioned this before, but Muncy Creek as a redirect to the Twp is what got me started on creeks as articles here (already liked them in real life), so I am glad to work on the Lyco List (plus I just like working with you). Once Larrys is ready I will work on the clickable map for the list. I like leaves - they are more manageable than trees. Ruhrfisch ><>°°

Wow, nearly four times as long to load - OK, I will work on getting rid of convert and switching to Geobox2 tonight. Thanks a lot, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:05, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
I know I have a lot of work to do on WDHC eventually, but will not even think of it for now (thanks for checking though). I did get some pix along Larrys Creek but have to upload them (and the land to walk from the highway to the source is all marked "private, no trespassing", so short of a boat I don't own, I am not sure how to get a photo of the source.) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:16, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) With the drought, I could get away with boots and staying close to the shore. I think I read once that the state legislature made Larrys Creek a public highway back in the early 1800s, but I am not sure I want to test this in a court of law. :-) Off to work on the article, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:28, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the congrats. The converts are all out, it is now Geobox 2, so Larrys is much faster loading for me. Still have some tweaks to do and two articles to write. I also uploaded a lot of new pix to Commons - I think I will add one or two to the article. Thanks for the addition to the List and replying to the PR. I took care of the semi automated PR stuff and split the lead into 3 paragraphs with a tweak or two. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:56, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I think Larrys is basically ready. I have started the covered bridge article and asked Daniel Case (who was very helpful with White Deer Hole Creek) to take a look at it too. I still have to write the list of tribs article, but that should be OK to do. I also added two pix - one winter and one autumnal. Phew. Am somewhat bummed out as IvoShandor has quit. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:53, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks - I am just being super anal about it being on the main page. I have two DYK hooks I am debating for the Cogan House Covered Bridge article. Ivo was upset about DYK, see here and below. I hope this blows over and he comes back if he feels like it. Have a good one, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:36, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

St Leonards, New South Wales

Hello Dincher. I noticed you moved the article on St Leonards, New South Wales to a page that includes punctuation. The Geographical Naming Board of New South Wales removed punctuation from almost all place names in this state, as have similar naming boards across Australia. St Leonards is now the correct way to spell this suburb, not St. Leonards. The same applies to other places such as St Marys, Huntleys Cove and Hunters Hill, to name a few. All wikipedia articles abide to the naming convention. Cheers, J Bar 01:48, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the info on St Leonards. I was "being bold." Perhaps I should've researched some more.

No worries. Sometimes local knowledge can be really valuable. The good thing about wikipedia is that there's a lot of people out there with a lot of local knowledge that they can share. Cheers, J Bar 22:26, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

I think that all of the "Saint" places should be changed to just that Saint Lenoards or Saint Louis or Saint Whoever. That would save some trouble and only cost us three letters! =)

Rain etc.

I am not sure why but I think they use millimeters for rain. My beloved PA Gazetteer of Streams II gives precipitation in inches and mm. I have not had time to read the list proposal yet. I am OK with the idea in general, have to see the details - some lists are pretty dry. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Bravo Dincher! I'm going to dig out my PSU Football Media Guide and see if there's anything significant I can add. BTW: I was at that woeful game in 1988 when Rutgers beat us…and when Syracuse did…and Pitt. Oh, the pain! —xanderer 02:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hook

How about that

Dick Anderson, who led Rutgers to its first victory over Penn State in 70 years, was a Penn State assistant coach before and after his time at Rutgers? Super busy in real life - feel free to tweak, Ruhrfisch ><>°°
