Nomination of Dive Pretzel Coaster for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Dive Pretzel Coaster is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dive Pretzel Coaster until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. McDoobAU93 02:44, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

You got to be kidding me....--Dom497 (talk) 02:44, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately I'm not. There's just not much here to warrant an article. You're of course free to contest the deletion and to continue working on the article in hopes of improving it. --McDoobAU93 02:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I know your not, I'm not stupid, just being sarcastic.--Dom497 (talk) 02:52, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

I got your e-mail. With all due respect, it proves nothing. I have no proof that the information you relayed is from someone with Vekoma, that said person was even authorized to discuss such information, etc. For all I know, you have a friend by that name who decided to respond to this. I'm not saying you're actually falsifying it or trying to be deceptive. On the contrary, you're most likely correct. That means nothing in terms of the article. As of right now (which is what I said in the AFD), there's not enough to merit a separate article. When reliable sources, including RCDB, begin discussing this, then I would agree that a standard roller coaster article be set up for the proposed Chinese installation. Further, there would need to be additional proof that this is a model that Vekoma intends to mass-produce much as they have with their Boomerang and SLC creations.

I know you mean well, Dom. You're a coaster fan, I'm a coaster fan. The problem is you're letting rumors and speculation blind you to how Wikipedia works, which is with facts derived from published, reliable sources. I can look back at my earliest edits on Wikipedia and see much the same things you're doing, so don't worry, it's not lethal. :)

--McDoobAU93 23:25, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

What rumours are you talking about. Everything in the article is supported by refs. The only reason why Chance Morgan is "possibly" no longer involved is because RCDB (reliable source) lists all the coasters being built at the Great Mall of China as Vekoma only.--Dom497 (talk) 12:54, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Based on what sources are presented in the article, here's what I have found.
Source #1 is a Los Angeles Times article from December 2010. The only statement attributed to this source in the article is regarding the plans (at the time) for the Orlando Thrill Park. Source #2 is a photo gallery connected to the Times article, same date. This provides the mention of the proposed name of the coaster and its manufacturers, Vekoma and Chance-Morgan. Source #3 is an Orlando Sentinel article from June 2011. Only one statement in the article is attributed to this source, stating that Orlando Thrill Park is DOA.
Those all deal with what was previously proposed, and I have no quarrel with them or their veracity. Taken by themselves, there's not enough here to provide enough notability for this to be a separate article. Now here are the two sources that I currently have a problem with, and why.
Source #4 is from The Star, a Malaysian news website. Two statements in the article are attributed to it, one about this ride being built in China, and another about Vekoma being the sole manufacturer. The Star piece mentions a "Pretzel Coaster", but there is no information in the source saying (a) this is a Vekoma ride and (b) this is intended to be the same thing as the Dive Pretzel Coaster concept mentioned for Orlando Thrill Park.
Source #5 seems to be the one that got this whole thing started. It's Screamscape, which happens to be one of my favorite rumor sites (heck, I've submitted more than a few rumors to it myself). Lance repeats the name from the Times source and that it was previously linked to Orlando Thrill Park. Lance goes on to say that "it is now said"—one of the first triggers that this is a rumor—that a copy of the ride will be built in China. Lance provides no link to the Star article, which he usually does when his posts are based on other reports. Neither Source 4 nor 5 make any mention of Chance-Morgan, but it is
original thought
to make the leap that they are no longer connected to the project. For it not to be OR, a reliable source would have to draw that conclusion themselves, and none have done so.
Screamscape is not deemed a
general notability standards
for an independent article.
Now, as to your mention of RCDB. RCDB is indeed considered a reliable source. However, none of the listings in RCDB make any mention of this type of coaster being built. So again, this is a case of an editor putting two and two together, which is original research and is not permitted.
Believe me, I edited the same way when I started. We enthusiasts know what we're talking about, how pieces fit together, and more often than not these rumor sites and our detective work turn out to be correct, and that's all fine and good for the enthusiast community. For an encyclopedia, however, the standards are much higher, and we need to hold ourselves to those standards, just as I am holding you to them. For the record, I'd say that you and Lance are almost certainly right, but that's not enough for an encyclopedia article.
--McDoobAU93 16:32, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I know how Screamscape works. Most of the stuff related to Canada and a bit of Cedar Fair comes from me. I'm going to end this right now and speedy delete the page.--Dom497 (talk) 16:36, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
A G7 speedy is up to you, of course. I would suggest perhaps copying the contents to a user sub-page. I'm sure that reliable sourcing will appear soon, and this should go right back into the encyclopedia. Its time just isn't now. --McDoobAU93 16:56, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
I did that the day you nominated the page :P --Dom497 (talk) 20:56, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good ... I expect this coaster article to be back online very soon. --McDoobAU93 21:06, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Really? What's "soon" to you? I say at least 6 to 12 months.--Dom497 (talk) 22:36, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Without knowing when Great Mall of China's entertainment wing is slated to open, I'd say by whenever that is. Not like there's a
WP:DEADLINE or anything. :) --McDoobAU93

Tatsu Edit

When you edited the intro to Tatsu on January 13, why did you remove all of my citations? I spent a lot of time putting those in and I would think we would want to have inline citations to back up those claims of tallest, fastest and longest.JlACEer (talk) 19:17, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

The lead's to articles are not supposed to have references.--Dom497 (talk) 19:52, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I had no idea. Is that a written policy? I see references in lead paragraphs all the time. I just clicked through a number of amusement-related articles and I've yet to find one that doesn't have a reference in the lead paragraph. Even some that you recently contributed to like Leviathan (roller coaster) and Test Track.
After looking further into the Tatsu article I see the references were moved to the bottom of the page — at first I thought you had just discarded them.JlACEer (talk) 20:13, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I just relized that its somewhat policy. This article says that if references in the lead are used somewhere else in the article there is no need to include them in the lead. However, if the ref is to only support a statment in the lead, then it is alright. And about how Levi and Test Track have refs in the lead, in Test Track, the one ref in the lead is used no where else in the article (other than the infobox), and the same goes with Levi.--Dom497 (talk) 20:30, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
(
WP:LEADCITE says that citations generally shouldn't be in the lead paragraphs because the lead should simply and quickly summarize what's already in the article. The exception would be if something in the lead is perceived as controversial or otherwise in need of supporting. In the case of amusement rides, that would be something along the lines of "Ride X is the tallest ride of its kind in the world". That statement is very LEAD-worthy, but because it's something of a boast, a citation is probably warranted. Conversely, "Ride X is a ride made by Super-Stupendous Rides and found at Amazeballs Park" doesn't really need one, if citations are provided later indicating that Ride X is indeed made by Super-Stupendous Rides and that Amazeballs Park has one. --McDoobAU93
20:36, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I'll keep that in mind for future edits, but I know that since I've been editing wiki articles for a little over a year now, I've put references in the lead paragraph probably 95% of the time. My question is: If the lead states XYZ coaster was made by ABC company and ABC company is listed in the infobox, is it necessary to mention it a third time elsewhere in the article so that a proper citation can be included? It is my understanding that the infobox should not have citations either. When I first started I had to change a lot of wooden coasters from PTC to the real builders (like Summers or Cobb), and if I had not provided a citation, my edits probably would have been undone. The lead paragraph seems like a natural place to mention the builder.JlACEer (talk) 21:09, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Ironically the latest Tatsu edit does not mention the manufacturer at all within the text. With the elimination of the overview section, there is no mention of B&M except in the infobox and there is no citation. Yes, we all know it's a B&M, but what if someone came along and claimed it was a Vekoma, there is currently no source to back up the real manufacturer. I had added a reference to RC! Magazine, but that was removed. The cited reference to Werner Stengel as the engineer was also removed.JlACEer (talk) 21:09, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I rarely put references in the infobox and I never cite the manufacturer or designer because I look at is as the RCDB link supports mostly everything in the infobox.--Astros4477 (talk) 21:31, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
The ref for Werner Stengel is still there, it is just not mentioned in the article (take a look at the Good Article roller coaster articles and none of them have WS mentioned.)--Dom497 (talk) 21:46, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I don't see Stengel anywhere in any of those references. You eliminated the reference I put in. At the very least he should be mentioned in the infobox. While RCDB is pretty solid, I am concerned about the added references to Coasterforce.com and YouTube. Websites have a knack for changing pages or disappearing altogether, as do YouTube videos. Do these really make for a Good Article? Who determines that these are good articles?JlACEer (talk) 21:58, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Again, take a look at some of the roller coaster GA articles (you can click on the green icons on the top of my talk page) and look at the YouTube refs. To answer you second question, people like you and me decide per
Good article nominations. Also, what ref are you talking about. Please [here] and tell me what ref # your talking about?--Dom497 (talk)
22:06, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
It's not [here] because you deleted it. It doesn't really matter, if all the good article reviewers don't think the manufacturer and designer need to have a citation then it's a moot point.JlACEer (talk) 22:26, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Dom, I think the track and trains section needs to be longer. Maybe add some information to the train section about how riders lay down?--Astros4477 (talk) 22:38, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
@Jiacer: The link I posted didn't go to the right page. Click on the history tab and click on the last edit by you and tell me the ref #, I would like to know what ref you are talking about (is it the magazine?). @Astross: I'm on it. :)--Dom497 (talk) 22:42, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it was the magazine article. I know not everyone has access to these issues, but they are a good source. It also took me a little time to find the issue that had the Tatsu article, so I wasn't real thrilled to see the citation deleted less than two weeks later. But, as I said, if citing the designer and manufacturer isn't necessary, then don't worry about it.JlACEer (talk) 22:54, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) In my opinion, if there is a source available (such as the magazine) we should make an effort to include it. These kind of sources are generally hidden from most as they aren't freely available on websites. Keep in mind, even if stuff is covered by RCDB, that doesn't mean other sources cannot support it. Recently I discovered "Amusement Business", a defunct magazine which I could access online archives of. I have been slowly adding sources here and there even if the information is already sourced as the citation along might help someone else further down the track.

On the topic of the Tatsu article, however, I have a few comments:

  • Information included in the lead and the infobox should also be included in the main body. There are several instances where this doesn't occur including no mentions of:
    • B&M
    • Flying Coaster
    • Werner Stengel
    • Background to the ride's name
  • Is the incident when a maintenance worker received some cuts to his arm notable? From what I have seen only serious injuries or deaths are generally reported in these types of sections.
  • Any more sources? At the moment RCDB, the press release and the doco are the only real references in the main body article. Surely this would not be enough for a GA standard.

I see that in you're sandbox, it looks like you're creating a List of Kings Island attractions. I personally don't think that is needed. "I don't see why you have a hard time wanting them in the article"--that must be a rhetorical question. They shouldn't be in the article, plain and simple. There is no mandate that such links be in the article; they're not web sites, they're just pages; they contain no information whatsoever that isn't already in the article; they're purely commercial; the ones for San Antonio, St. Louis, San Francisco, and New Jersey are exactly the same, as are the ones for Arlington and Atlanta, and they're essentially the same as the La Ronde one. GA Newsletter

Hi Dom497, just enquiring regarding the status of the GA Newsletter delivery. Were you doing this manually or would you like me to run the bot? Last month was run manually and so I'm on a "pause" so to speak just awaiting a resume notice. Cheers, — JamesR (talk) 11:36, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Couple things for you

Hello Dom. I just want to ask you how do I launch something new for roller coasters such as Operation Vekoma to help nominate Vekoma roller coasters to GA Status? You actually launched something new for roller coasters called Operation B&M. How do I launch something like Operation Vekoma to allow other users to help promote Vekoma roller coasters to GA Status? I think that is something new we should add to WikiProject Amusement Parks in the area to nominate Vekoma roller coaster articles]] to GA Status. How do I launch something new like Operation Vekoma --Starship9000 (talk) 22:24, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Because something like this would fall under the WikiProject's Collaboration Center, I suggest we hold off on Operation Vekoma until Operation B&M is complete. After the current operation is complete, I will be more then happy to get Operation Vekoma started.--Dom497 (talk) 23:28, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
I agree with you about the Operation Vekoma one that is on hold after Operation B&M is completed. But I got a question about how do I nominate pages to B-class? Do I add a template, change the quality scale, anything? --Starship9000 (talk) 23:32, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Please don't tell me this has to do with SkyScreamer.....--Dom497 (talk) 23:35, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Starship, we have told you a dozen times that there is no template. You have to fix whats in yellow.-- Astros4477 (Talk) 00:00, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Specifically, this diff en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Good_article_nominations&diff=539094812&oldid=539039595

Could you please inform me as to where the proposal currently is as after taking a look at rfc I have been unable to locate it.

Also, would you please in future not edit my talk page posts without my consent, which would include moving them to another page without even notifying me.

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Recruitment centre

My compliments an excellent idea, I will keep a watch on how it develops and adapts through experience. I have not reviewed enough articles myself to be able to take part but wish you all well. Edmund Patrick confer 20:24, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank-you for your support! You got six reviews right now....I think you can make it to 15! Anyway, I don't know if you nominate articles or not but if you do, you can still help out (read the "Nominations please read this" section in the original message I sent out).--Dom497 (talk) 21:00, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Excellent and much needed idea. Also a lot of good work on developing one particular approach towards teaching/helping someone get going. My own impression is that at first glance it appears to take one particular extensive regimented approach and making it the way. Also, it appears set up for a having a teacher who already pretty much knows everything, including the areas that I'm still learning/ developing a perspective on at 41 reviews. So its not for me at the moment, but thanks for your efforts on a much needed idea and I hope it goes well. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 10:15, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the feedback! Can you tell me what you are still learning (if you want) so I can see if something can be changed/added to the Recruitment Centre to make the accessibility easier? Also, I don't know if you nominate articles, but if you do, you can still help out, by reading the "Nominators please read this" section in the orginial message I sent out (if you haven't already). Thanks again!--Dom497 (talk) 18:45, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
What I'm still learning is finding that right line between between too tough/thorough, and too easy. In short, how tough/thorough is about right? Seeing the massive variations in this, I'm probably doing pretty good at finding the middle, but it has taken 40 reviews to learn and build confidence even halfway on that. Or maybe I'm in the final phase where I've found the "middle" but have not built the total confidence that it is that. So when I see a review that is on the toughest/most thorough end of the spectrum, such will no longer make me worry that my being in the middle is "too easy" North8000 (talk) 11:34, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre message

Gather Together FAC

Hi Dom, I'm sure that you're busy with the GA recruitment, but I have an FA that's languishing. [3] Would you mind going over and looking at it for me? I recommend that you ask around for folks to review your coaster FA article, too, so that it doesn't fail due to lack of support. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:32, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

My nomination has lots of support....some one just needs to spot-check it and then the decision should be made (as far as Ian (the delegate) has said). Regarding your nomination, I can't support or oppose it as I do not review FAC's...only GAN's. I honestly don't feel comfortable reviewing a FAC as I have no idea how to. I feel like if I were to review a candidate I would get bashed for doing something wrong (which is what I want to avoid). FA standards are a big jump from GA standards (that I am used to) and I don't think I'm ready to cross the bridge just yet. The least I could do for you is do an image check which I've done on the review page. Sorry.--Dom497 (talk) 23:27, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

FAC review?

Hi, if you have some spare time, would you care to review God of War: Betrayal? It's very close to being promoted, I just need a review or two from a non-expert, as in, someone outside of the WP video game project. --JDC808 16:57, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

If you read my comment above, you will find out that I don't review FAC's. But just (and only) because there is already a lot of support and there are virtually no errors left, I have left comments on the review page.--Dom497 (talk) 19:23, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
