Thanks for the welcome

Hello, Duncan. Thank you the welcome on my talk page. I have been reading and observing wikipedia for over a year, but have made very few comments. I have to admit that I have been interested in the wikidrama more than anything else. Low tastes, I guess! Only recently have I registered. Looking at your talk page we seem to have similar values, although I'm a bit further left than you are. May I come to you for help or advice in the future if I need it? --Eriastrum 16:53, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blood libel / Mein Kampf / Protocols

Sheesh. Sorry to hear that. I could have guessed the latter two, but as I was genuinely astonished to see the blood libel alive and well in the 21st C on the programme, I'm curious as to where it's thriving in the English-speaking world (not that I doubt you... sadly, I'm now less shockable). --Dweller 13:40, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

American Aryan nation type organizations are probably the most visible manifestation, but a disturbing number of (mainly) American evangelical/charismatic Christian preachers work some form of the blood libel into their preachings (often very subtly and cleverly - which is the most dangerous!). DuncanHill 13:45, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Gosh. I knew there was some manifestation of neo-Nazism in America, but the blood libel? I can't understand how any intelligent person could possibly believe it; especially when Jews view blood with such repugnance. Oh well. --Dweller 13:53, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's very subtle, working on they wilfully refuse Jesus' message, if they would do that to Our Lord, what else are they capable of...... that sort of stuff, not enough to be too obvious, but more than enough to stir the imagination, and lead the more susceptible on. DuncanHill 13:59, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving your talk page

You're getting to the kind of stage where you might consider doing this. Dunno if you have thought about it, but there are two options - manual and bot automated. Neither is hard. If you want help, let me know. --Dweller 13:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help

thanks for you message, i dont know how to send messages so this is the only way i knew how to get in contact with you (sorry if this is the wrong way to do it). im trying to remove a paragraph that i know to be inaccurate on the islam page about jihad. however i cant edit it and its been removed twice from the "to do list". the first time it was removed no reason was given as to why; the second time someone said i needed consensus to put things there, however i read the "to do list" wiki page and it says that as long as its been discussed then you can add it unless further discussion is needed (its been two days and the only other person that posted asked me to try the edit, but im not allowed to edit it), so i guess my question is, is there a reason as to why or a way to stop people from undoing my "to do list" edit? (209.27.62.219) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.27.62.219 (talkcontribs)

(I am copying my reply here from your talk page)

Thanks for your message on my talk page - yes that's the right place to get a message to me! I've had a quick look at your edit to the "to do" list at the Islam talk page. I think that what you are saying there would be seen by many people as contentious - so you would need to find some very good references before adding it to the article. When an article arouses such strong feelings and possibility for controversy as the Islam article does, building a consensus is very important before making bold statements. I suggest you add the text you want put into the article as a new section on the talk page, together with any references you can find, and ask for comments. I think you would probably need to wait more than a couple of days - let's say a week - to give other editors time to comment in an informed way. I hope that this is of some help - please feel free to ask if there is anything more you need to know.

By the way - you forgot to put ~~~~ after your message to me, this would produce a signature which makes it easier for me to reply. Also, I think it would be a good idea for you to get an account with a username - that way, you will be able to edit "semi-protected" articles yourself, as well as having your own userpage and talk page like I have. It is free, and you don't have to give out any personal information - in fact, with a username you have better privacy than you do editing with an IP address! Best wishes, DuncanHill 16:36, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problematic new editor.

Please see Special:Contributions/Whathojeeves. This editor's work is constantly POV and has to be reverted. -- Evertype· 18:15, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message, I had noticed this editor's contributions, but I'm unsure how to procede - I'm not in any way an expert on Cornish Language issues, and of course as you know it is a sensitive area, with strong feelings aroused by the different approches to orthography, revival etc. From what I can see you have been doing a good job removing the more obvious POV comments, but I will try to be more active myself in watching him. I'll also see if I can find an appropriate warning template for him. DuncanHill 12:20, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The WP article on Philip Payton contributed to by this editor, was in an undesirable state, until my recent edits. It is to be guessed that

"He also edits the acclaimed paperback series, Cornish Studies. His other interests include the politics of ethnicity and territorial identity. In 2000, he edited (together with Amy Hale) 'New Directions in Celtic Studies', published by Exeter University Press. This contains contributions by a wide variety of authors, including Colin H. Williams' 'Conclusion: New Directions in Celtic Studies: An Essay in Social Criticism'."

means that the author of article selected for special mention may be in some way related to one of the editors of the WP Payton article.
I have amended the following text

"Payton was made a Bard of Gorseth Kernow in 1981, taking the Bardic name Car Dyvresow ('Friend of Exiles'). Despite receiving this honour, he has done little to promote the Cornish language revival, rather he has played down its success and attempted to undermine its public credibility (e.g. Cornish or Klingon, Cornish Studies Fourteen, 2006)".

The Cornish Studies article complained of is by Bernard Deacon, not Payton. It is a witty and constructive analysis of the problem facing the various revived Cornish Language versions, which have not achieved "standardization" or general public acceptance. Cornish Studies has published many interesting and helpful articles on the Cornish language. ===Vernon White - T A L K . . . to me. 15:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Klingon and revived Cornish

The journal article, to which KK adherents object, was by Bernard Deacon not Philip Payton. It appeared in Cornish Studies: Fourteen (2006). I understand that KK adherents have a`reputation for behaving in a wist, obnoxious way. Payton contributes a magesterial introduction to each issue of Cornish studies and, in "Fourteen", he does re-inforce his colleague, Deacon's statement concerning standardisation, but without "undermining" anyone. Thank you for your modest and reasoned note on Who Ho's talk page. Vernon White - T A L K . . . to me. 22:27, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duncan... I don't know what to do about Saunders' persistent vandalism but to revert it. He is more or less immune to rational discussion. Can I, an ordinary editor, issue a vandalism warning to him? What will that accomplish? I do not quite see how I have behaved "improperly", apart from trying to keep his and Keith's POV under control. I've talked with Vernon about this and even managed to add information about the Partnership Process which no editor (pro-KK or anti-) has been brave enough to do. -- Evertype· 07:57, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All editors can issue vandalism warnings, I am an ordinary editor and have issued many. There is a system for dealing with vandalism, but it only works if editors can be bothered to apply it. I think you behaved improperly in the AfD by failing to declare your personal interest, an interest which was not clear from either your userpage or the article about you. I have added a bald factual statement about your co-authorship of the new proposed form of Cornish to the article about you, with a reference. DuncanHill 08:54, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It didn't occur to me to "declare an interest". Whether I am one of those who are the butt of Tim's pet theory or not, it remains the case that "authenticism" isn't a real "ism" at all, and is not encyclopaedic. I have no problem with having my interest in Cornish on the article about me; indeed, there is more which could be said about my Cornish-language publishing activities. -- Evertype· 12:54, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's the point - you do have an interest beyond that of most editors, you co-authored the proposal, as well as designing and typesetting the document, yet it didn't occur to you to mention it. This isn't a minor contribution to a minor paper a few years ago - it's a significant contribution to a very recent major paper which is at the heart of the dispute. I personally have no problem with editors contributing to their own articles (so long as they keep within the WP guidelines, with which you are surely now very familiar) or to editors responding to criticism of their work outside Wikipedia - I do have a problem when editors do not reveal their own interests in a debate. That it "didn't occur" to you suggests (to me at least) that you lack an appreciation of the way in which your actions may be perceived by others.
Mind-reading comes easier to some people than it comes to me... ;-) -- Evertype· 13:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You mention above that you have talked to Vernon about Whathojeeves' contributions - yet Vernon (from his comments at the AfD) seemed unaware of your involvement in the KS proposal. I don't want to get into a dispute with you (or with Whathojeeves for that matter) but when I see someone requesting a "speedy" on an article critical of their own work, without being open about their interest, I will say what I think - that it is improper behaviour and unsuitable for Wikipedia. DuncanHill 13:13, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but "Authenticism" isn't a criticism of KS. Its a hatchet job on everyone who doesn't use KK. It's Tim's own fantasy. It's been plaguing us for months on other forums. The article is appalling, whether or not it affects me. I was not "hiding" my "interests" however. -- Evertype· 13:32, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Michael - please do not reformat my comments on this (or any other) talk page - it is seen as very bad form on Wikipedia as it can distort the flow of a discussion & it removes comments from their signatures and time-stamps. It also makes it harder for me to follow your responses. DuncanHill 13:50, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mind reading - you don't need to read minds, just ask yourself "What would I think, how would I feel?" if you were in the other fellow's shoes.

I don't recall ever saying that you were "hiding" your interests, I did say that you failed to declare them. There is a considerable difference in meaning. DuncanHill 13:50, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your cool mediation Duncan. WhathoJeeves is a little eccentric in his style and will need copy editing etc., but I do not believe he is a vandal. Evertype does have great difficulty seeing others POV. He is well used to Wikipedia and uses his knowledge to promote his interests. Unfortunatly very few Cornish Language people are Wikipedians (Branbras where are you?), so I'm having to hold the fort until reinforcements arrive :-) Please bear with us a little longer. Mongvras 23:04, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Everson's attack dogs? Duncan? Do you accept this abuse from Mongvras? I don't know who Feline1 is. But I assure you that Keith's attack is just the same kind of ad-hominem attack I have had to put up with him for two years now. -- Evertype· 21:21, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All concerned please read

Frankly I am getting fed-up with the lot of you. Not one of the principal actors in the on-going Cornish Language WikiWars has shown a proper sense of moderation or common-sense. Not one of you seems to have bothered to read and apply the various policies and guidance that WP has for resolving disputes. Name-calling, personal attacks on all sides, defamatory posts on talk pages and AfD's, what looks suspiciously like hidden-canvassing & sock-puppetry, and a general atmosphere of mistrust. As I have said elsewhere on WP, it is immensely dispiriting and disappointing. It is also a perfect example of why so few people can be bothered to learn any form of Cornish. You guys are your own worst enemies - why on earth should anyone invest time and effort in learning a language when the so-called experts seem to spend more time and effort on point-scoring than they do on anything constructive. We have a Cornish Language article which is almost entirely devoted to bickering about orthography, while the whole question of grammar is referred to an article on Welsh! We have practically nothing of any value on the surviving corpus of historic Cornish-language texts, and nothing at all of value on current writing in Cornish. If you were all using Wikipedia to deliberately discourage Cornish language revival, and to generally undermine efforts to celebrate and promote wider Cornish culture, you could hardly do a better job. You should all be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves, as I am ashamed that the land I grew up in and love with a passion should be represented by such silliness. Now in saying all that I'm perfectly aware that I myself have probably violated
WP:CIVIL and god knows what else, but there is a time and a place for straight-talking, and this is it. You want a Cornish-language revival? Start acting like it. DuncanHill 22:03, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply

Hi, I noticed you said, "South Tyrol is what it is called in English, and this is an English-Language Wikipedia". Note that the area is referred to by not only South Tyrol in English but also by Alto Adige, the Province of Bolzano, and the Province of Bolzano-Bozen. This is English, right? :-) [2][3]. Native speaker of English? Are you in the UK? On this side of the pond it looks like the term used most often is Alto Adige. I think this has a lot to do because people basically know this region for its wines and then tourism. Anyway, all the names are certainly good, used in English, full of history, blah blah blah. :-) There are some unfortunate political connotations with Alto Adige and South Tyrol though; a good part of the reason why we went with something like
Province of Trento, aka Trentino). If we didn't do a good job though, any constructive criticism is welcome. thanks. Icsunonove 21:09, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply

Glad to learn that Gowers calls it a phrasal verb. I'll have to check my copy when I get home. That will be a useful citation.
