Saw you were poking around interesting pages: One for your attention

Dweller, aware you're semi-retired but lately active on some interesting pages, I wanted to bring to your attention the curious case of Walter O'Brien, which struggles with the fictional CBS show and the real-life version who appears to consult U.S. Army and others on what we must see as vetted, technical, and competitive projects including artificial intelligence. In all lights, the page runs afoul of WP:NPOV. Hey Dweller,

I've written a user script to enhance search results.

It provides menu items for turning these features on/off:

  • Sort
  • Single-spaced results
  • Wikicode for list items (for copying/pasting)
  • Etc.

The page Help:Searching has been revamped, and the above features work especially well with the special characters and parameters presented on that page.

It's SearchSuite.

Hope you like it.     — The Transhumanist    02:04, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary in "Century"

I have no issue with these edits to "Century", but I do have an issue with one of the edit summaries:

(→‎Start and end in the Gregorian calendar: everyone agrees there was no year zero. It's the argument about it that's the issue)

The Anno Domini system of numbering years was created by Dionysius Exiguus in 525. He did not explain how he calculated or estimated the incarnation of Jesus, which he intended to commemorate. He also did not indicate which year of his notation he thought the incarnation occurred in; Using modern notation, he might have thought it was in 2 BC, 1 BC, or AD 1. He also did not make any suggestions about how to represent years before AD 1; he was only concerned with years in his Easter Table, which started in 532. So the statement that there was no year 0 is not universally agreed to. I would be cautious about extending your reasoning to any other article. Jc3s5h (talk) 12:27, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Does "anyone" seriously contend that the year before 1AD should be called "0"? --
old fashioned! 12:31, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply
]
No one seriously contends that a document that uses consistent notation should use "1 AD" and "0"; "1 AD" and "1 BC" go together. But if one decided to use, for example, astronomical year numbering and designate those years "1" and "0", it would not be a valid argument that the century before the first was -99 to 0 inclusive because Dionysius intended 1 as the year of the Incarnation of Jesus. He might just have well intended 0 or -1. So a person who wanted to designate the century before the first century as -100 to -1 inclusive would be on equally solid ground. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:31, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just don't understand your responses. The section is labelled "Gregorian calendar" and the sentence specifies "in the Gregorian calendar". --
old fashioned! 08:50, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply
]
The Gregorian calendar can be extrapolated backward from its adoption in October 1582, in which case it's sometimes called the "proleptic Gregorian calendar" (but not everyone bothers with "proleptic". Notation that uses year 0, year −1, etc. can be used with the proleptic Gregorian calendar. ISO 8601 requires this (although it would use the notation 0000, −0001, etc.). Jc3s5h (talk) 14:45, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but this is an encyclopedia, not a science journal. When people read about the Gregorian calendar in an encyclopedia, they expect to see information related to the Gregorian calendar. --

Keeping in touch

Hey, I just wanted to update you on what I've been up to, and some of the things going on around the 'pedia that you might not be aware of...

As you know, I'm quite involved with Wikipedia's navigation systems.

One of the systems I had not been directly involved in for years, the portals, was nominated for deletion (yes, all portals, and the portal namespace) in an RfC that drew over 500 Wikipedians to comment.

It wasn't going well for portals, due to the pile on effect. I noticed that they hadn't notified the pages nominated for deletion. So, I intervened. :)

Many editors came to the portals' defense, and it turned out that many people are interested in portals, and we now have a thriving Portals WikiProject of 84 members.

We're in the process of automating portals, and I thought you might be interested in

what we are up to now
.

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   22:20, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC conflict and the Portals WikiProject.

Birthday honours for Van Morrison

Hi I recently undid your edit on the above page concerning his knighthood. I like you, initially thought there was an error on the year as he was on the 2015 birthday honours list but I checked out the sources and in fact the list is simply "PRIME MINISTER’S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE BIRTHDAY HONOURS" which the Queen approves but the knighthood itself is conferred at a later date as per [2] and Van's knighthood was conferred in 2016. 1 Maccabees 6:43

Unfortunately, the Greek construction involved isn't very precise in its meaning. The nominative singular name Ελεαζαρος is followed by a masculine nominative singular definite article, so what follows could be a description (Alexandros ho Megas) or an alternative name, etc. It's certainly not any ordinary or direct way of indicating "son of", but it should be kept in mind that Jerome claims to have had access to the lost Hebrew original text of 1 Maccabees... Some of the sources think it's a nickname. Jerome clearly has a different tradition, but we know Elazar's dad was Matityahu, so unless Jerome thinks Matityahu also had a nickname or he thinks this is a different Elazar, he's either mistranslating his Hebrew text, or he has a defective one. I wonder if he had a Hebrew text translated from the Greek, rather than the original? That would make a lot of sense. --

Lechis

Hi, I saw you had a question (When I was checking the history on that page) on why they couldn't just use the pole as a lechi as is often done. One thing with an eruv wire is that is has to be at the top of the lechi. In many cases the wires on the telephone pole cross in a T with the pole so it's not on top, and putting something on the top of the pole would be too high so a shorter lechi is used adjacent to the telephone pole. Can a user with no rights rename accounts?

I'm curious about something that you as a bureaucrat might be able to explain to me.

I ran across the account Mohamed Ouda today after noticing he had re-created (not moved) a rejected draft in main space. I moved it back, then looked at his contributions.... and it's full of user account renamings. Mohamed Ouda has been here since 2008, he has less than 500 edits on en-wiki, and no user rights (other than autoconfirmed), although his talk page says he's an admin on the Arabic Wikipedia. I thought only bureaucrats could rename accounts. Can anybody do it? Could I as an admin rename accounts? All good ideas. Anything that's clear. Especially for newbies. We need to remember that ARBPIA is exactly the kind of thing a newbie might be attracted into editing by. Something they feel passionate about and is relevant to them. What we need to do is harness that passion, rather than stoke or frustrate it. We're not exactly rich with an influx of new editors. Hi, I can't tell if my comment was accepted or not. Pinging @Doug Weller:. The version "Registered accounts with fewer than 500 edits and with less than 30 days tenure are also prohibited." is wrong. Literally it says that to be prohibited you need to have both less than 500 edits and also less than 30 days. But in fact either of those things alone makes you prohibited. I suggest that it would be less liable to misreading if worded with fewer negatives: "Registered accounts are only permitted if they have been registered for at least 30 days and have made at least 500 edits." We've been working on a new portal design, and I was wondering if you would take a look at it. Please check out Portal:Lithuania, click on the various < and > symbols, and let me know what you think.    — The Transhumanist   12:56, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ryder Cup

Hello, each Cup, we typically don't update the score each and every hole, and it is messy and requires too much. Typically we wait until the match is over. Also, proper wording was taken out by that editor who never edits golf and had little or no understanding of the correct terminology. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:06, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I think you've confused me with someone else. I've not added any scores. Just a useful template. --

I should have clarified. I was explaining why I was reversing that other editor's edits. I figured that's why you added the template. Sorry about that. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:15, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's OK. When these live events take place you can get people rushing to edit and tempers can fray, so it's a useful template. And for the readers, they should know that when they see a score, we're not a news site. --

We're nearly there I think. I can't remember what's outstanding - finding it difficult to find more than trivial amounts of time onwiki atm. --

Improving the Polish proverb article

I appreciate your offer to help improve

Heaven for the nobles, Purgatory for the townspeople, Hell for the peasants, and Paradise for the Jews article. Feel free to edit it now or in the future, or join discussions on talk. That said, I think there's little else we can do outside getting the two offline Polish sources that seem to be in-depth treatment of this. Everything else is pretty much already in the article, and for the most part, seems to be discussing the proverb or any of its derivative or originating elements in passing. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:25, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply

Sorry for the disambiguity! An Old Fashioned cocktail must, must have a couple of drops of Angostura. Take my word for it, they are my favorite cocktail, and a poorly made one is always a disappointment. I suppose I was prompted by a particularly tasty looking specimen at the page you created. A thank-you for that, if you will. Best regards, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 07:24, 3 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Kevin Beattie

On 4 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kevin Beattie, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the footballer Kevin Beattie (pictured) was described by former England manager Bobby Robson as the best England player he had ever seen? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kevin Beattie. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Kevin Beattie), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Dweller,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 19:13, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
