Ayer Itam articles

Thanks for your updates for settlements in Penang, which many of them are being outdated and last time the major edits were some by an users that already been banned due to sockpuppets. I would like to query about is that any valid references that indicates the changes of official name of Air Itam. I only can observe from the road signboard that now change to Ayer. At the same time, perhaps you may take time to update on mega infrastructure including the Penang Southern Island projects. angys (Talk Talk)

Hi and welcome. The existing pages about settlements in Penang are in need of serious rewriting, and this is where the focus on my end may be for the time being. As for the source for the name change, here it is: [1] hundenvonPG (talk) 00:14, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to join WikiProjects Malaysia

Hey, Hundevon. I've recently noticed that you've contributed significantly both in Commons and Wikipedia on pages regarding Penang-related articles. Keep the great work going! – gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 06:03, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there PenangLion! Thanks for the invite (and apologies for the late response. I was AFK). Understood that you're based in Penang too? Perhaps there are some Penang-related topics we can collaborate on. hundenvonPG (talk) 13:11, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For collaboration, absolutely. I have the idea of creating a specific Penang-related WikiProjects but its for another time.
I've worked a lot on Penang-related articles, currently mid-way in full rewrite for Komtar (you may check at User:PenangLion/sandbox 4). I hope it'll be a GA soon.
Similarly, I'm also working on several sections for George Town, Penang but its on hold for now (User:PenangLion/Penang sandbox, note the Law, governance and constituency sections). gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 14:56, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing to note is that I'm focused more on historical events and political articles rather than of demographics. But if you require additional assistance for any articles I'd be obliged to help :) gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 15:01, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed easy to get sidetracked in WP, going down one rabbit hole after another. I don't have all day too unfortunately. Life and its commitments ... But hey, feel free to ping me should you need assistance. I just had a quick look at the rewritten sections for George Town and apart from a few wording improvements/changes, it's looking good. Shall have a deeper look when I've the time.
A specific WikiProject for Penang sounds interesting too; I've been creating templates for categories of places and buildings in George Town (Parks, Places of worship, Hospitals) and the volume is there (potentially). hundenvonPG (talk) 05:08, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some documents you might find interesting

Contrary to my beliefs, it seems like the Menteri Kewangan had published statistical zones for actual conurbations (aka. metropolitan areas). Some documents exist discussing their extents. I hope you find them useful.
[1]
[2]
gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 06:10, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some documents were contradicting. Apparently, the finance ministry tabled their own statistical boundaries for conurbations. The figures actually showed that their boundaries were slightly larger than what we thought.
Instead of estimating GT Metro under six local governments, the finance ministry's version of Konurbasi Utara (which is their intepretation of George Town metro) includes the entire Yan District and parts of Selama (although I have no idea which part it includes, but it is very likely it encompasses Ulu Selama and Selama subdistricts).
The same situation can be said of the National Conurbation (Klang Valley) and the Southern Conurbation (Iskandar Malaysia), as well as the inclusion of an entirely new area, namely the Eastern Conurbation (Kuantan). gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 06:29, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently a 2021 presentation made by the finance ministry listed out several items:
  1. There are four conurbations in the country, with the national being konurbasi utama, and the northern, southern and eastern conurbations being konurbasi sekunder.
  2. A second and third classes of populated zones are categorised into zon promosi pembangunan and pusat katalis.
This would mean that the recalculation of the five largest metro areas would be:
  • National Conurbation - 9.8752 million
  • Northern Conurbation - 2.9321 million
  • Southern Conurbation - 2.4876 million
  • ZPP Ipoh - 889.6 thousand
  • Eastern Conurbation - 793.6 thousand
gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 07:05, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @PenangLion: ! This may need some discussion IMO. I've been doing abit of digging based on the docs. Trying to break down some findings.
  • The first doc ([3]) is from the
    Ministry of Local Government Development
(KPKT). This could explain the contradictions between the two docs.
  • In the domain of spatial planning and urban development, (rather obviously) town planners have better qualifications than economists. Comparing the two, I'd be inclined to take the PlanMalaysia doc as the more authoritative definition.
  • In actual fact, the four-conurbation model has been around since the first (or second?) National Physical Plan, sometime around 2010, give or take.[1][2] It was at this stage where George Town's conurnation was given a definition.
  • But comparing the available sources, the PlanMalaysia doc does look (slightly) more detailed. The World Bank source only states Penang Island, Seberang Prai, Sungai Petani, Kulim and the surrounding areas (see map). So I found this rather proper report-style doc from KPKT's website itself: [5]
  • And here's the hard part. Upon closer inspection, I think it's not possible to obtain the exact total population for Greater Penang with the available 2020 census figrues. The map shows the conurbation's Perak-side boundaries slicing through parts of
    Selama
districts. Not much of a description of where exactly does the conurbation cover, only that it spans Sebahagian Selama, Perak.
  • Unless there is a clearer, more definitive map showing the conurbation's limits, the total population may be rather difficult to ascertain. But I did some conservative estimates of what could be the total.
  • The map shows the mukim of Selama being within Greater Penang, as well as Berlah and Bukit Merah (just off the southern tip of Kedah as I counter checked with the PerakGIS website: [6]). Based on that I estimated the total as:
Penang: 1740405
Sungai Petani: 545053
Kulim: 337735
Yan: 73384
Bandar Baharu: 44412
Selama: 13651
Berlah: 11808
Bukit Merah: 130
Total: 2,766,578
... which is considerably smaller than our earlier calculations. Likely due to much of Kerian not being within the conurbation to begin with.
  • And looking at the current Greater Penang Conurbation article, if this PlanMalaysia/Local Government Ministry source is to be the most definitive definition, it's not just the numbers that need updating. The map as well (at my current speed, it took me a few weeks to come up with the location maps of George Town, so this may not be an overnight sort of work).
Do let me know what you think too. This is rather intriguing.
On a side note, new content for smaller conurbations like Kuantan and Ipoh's sounds interesting, rather than just the big 3 (Klang Valley, Greater Penang, Iskandar) monopoly on urban region content in Malaysia. If they come to fruition. Sourcing still needs to be found for those two. hundenvonPG (talk) 14:14, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some more digging revealed additional findings. I stand corrected about George Town conurbation's timeline.
  • This KPKT doc [7] from 2006 (back when Badawi was PM) already had a geographic definition for George Town's conurbation. Notice how at that point, Bandar Baharu, Yan and Selama were not included within the George Town conurbation.
  • Following the lead from the KPKT report, I also found this on the 4th National Physical Plan (NPP) for the Northern Region [8]. This is more specific, putting Kulim, Sungai Petani, Bandar Baharu, Yan, Parit Buntar, Bagan Serai, Alor Pongsu (and Bukit Merah) and Selama within George Town's conurbation. It also appears that some towns like Yan, Bandar Baharu and Selama were later additions to the metropolitan area, inferring an expansion in George Town's conurbation limits between 2006 and circa 2020.
  • It appears that the maps are not to be taken at face value. Conurbation boundaries inexplicably cut across entire districts and even mukims (as can be seen with George Town conurbation's Perak-side boundaries). Similar cases can be seen with ZPP Ipoh (inexplicably cutting across Kampar's mukims) and even for Kuantan's conurbation [9] (its boundaries in
    Kemaman
appear to somehow dissect a few mukims).
  • Having said that, by accounting for mukims that are definitively within the conurbation's limits, a total population figure can now be ascertained. For George Town Conurbation:
Penang: 1740405
Sungai Petani: 545053
Kulim: 337735
Bandar Baharu: 44412
Yan: 73384
Bagan Serai: 40336
Beriah: 11808
Bukit Merah: 130
Parit Buntar: 37249
Simpang Lima: 51
Selama: 13651
Total: 2,844,214
  • Similar approach (by calculating populations of mukims at places where the boundaries are vague) can be taken for determining the population of Ipoh and Kuantan conurbation. On another note, the 4th NPP has effectively opened a sea corridor for Ipoh's conurbation, something not seen previously as Ipoh itself is landlocked.
Ipoh conurbation:
Ipoh: 759,952
Sungai Siput: 62,856
Lumut: 59,369
Damar Laut: 13
Kampong Baharu: 185
Sitiawan: 122,295
Pekan Gurney: 1,622
Kampong Sitiawan: 282
Kampong Koh: 3,970
Ayer Tawar: 3,050
Bota: 30,678
Bota Kanan: 121
Seri Iskandar: 14,827
Kampar: 97,216
Batu Gajah: 126,024
Total: 1,282,460
Kuantan conurbation:
Kuantan: 548,014
Pekan
: 121,158
Hulu Jabur: 9,345
Banggul: 13,782
Pasir Semut: 5,920
Biniai: 18,885
Chukai: 61,764
Teluk Kalung: 21,307
Kijal: 16,190
Kemasik: 10,797
Kerteh: 26,392

Total: 865,288
hundenvonPG (talk) 05:12, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Part of Kuala Ketil, Baling District is also under the northern conurbation angys (Talk Talk) 17:22, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kuala Ketil isn't specifically mentioned as part of George Town's conurbation in the report (page 7-11 for Kedah) [10].
I've zero idea how KPKT planners drew the conurbation boundaries. The boundaries are so oddly drawn, inexplicably cutting across so many mukims (across George Town, Ipoh and Kuantan conurbations) that it's best not to take the maps at face value. If there are more in-depth definitions from KPKT, that would actually be more helpful. hundenvonPG (talk) 21:18, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for uploading many photos of Penang, but I hope you can enable on the GPS next time so that the viewers can know the location exactly and easily, e.g. This photo is not labeled with coordinates angys (Talk Talk) 09:42, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well I don't think there is coordinates in the EXIF data for many of my photos. Maybe, the most I can do is manually add in the coordinates of each subject the next time. hundenvonPG (talk) 10:26, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On the title pictures of Komtar and George Town

Hello Hundenvon, I have several suggestions regarding the images for Komtar and George Town, Penang.

I noticed recently that several of your images are rather dim. They are high quality and great in composition, but I personally think that it's best to use pictures shot during the day (preferably the morning, ie. 7-9am) or during the late afternoon (5pm).

For Komtar, I have a knack for the titlebox image itself. It's a great image but I think it could be even better. I've provided several examples.

I hope you may find it useful. Cheers, gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 02:08, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks PenangLion Indeed the Komtar photo was taken at dusk (I personally lean towards the dusk "magic hour" for buildings and cityscapes, and I had intended to show some lighting on the tower). Though admittedly it could do with some more fine tuning (I wasn't sure about increasing the exposure or if it's too dark), so your current mod looks about right.
Perhaps I'll give you a heads-up whenever I've another photo taken? Thinking of sharing with you some original files, but preferably not on Wikimedia as it's sort of an excess to do so. hundenvonPG (talk) 02:21, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On another note, a few editors (angys & cmglee) & myself are planning to meet this Saturday at 6pm. Place TBC but most likely 1st Avenue. Would you like to come along? hundenvonPG (talk) 05:24, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not for now, I prefer to stay low :) (and I'm busy with work). But please give my best regards for both editors. gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 07:42, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding this, can you help me convey my ideas of forming a sub-Wikiprojects main dedicated to Penang-related topics? I find the necessity of it rising in recent years. Thank you again. gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 07:43, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Detailed map of George Town

Hello Hunden, recently I'm drafting a highly detailed urban map of George Town based on your work, under the same colour schemes you have used and layouts. If you are interested in amending or improving the files (or even use it for your own maps), hit me up and I'll share a copy to you. gavre (al. PenangLion) (talk) 13:28, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey PenangLion. Sure thing, I'd like to have a look too I just saw the map you made for Tanjong Tokong line, and it's looking dope. I was thinking of a pushpin map, but on a more zoomed-in level like how you did. hundenvonPG (talk) 01:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late replies Hunden, but currently I managed to map a large portion of the Northwest and the majority of the island's urban neighbourhoods, except for Balik Pulau and its surrounding villages.
