ed as "Free Software"

I see that you recently put the "free software portal" tag on the Ed article. Technically this is not correct. ed was a component of UNIX which was a product of AT&T Bell Labs ... which was distributed to certain universities (such as the Computer Science Research Group, the CSRG, at Univ. California at Berkeley). However, it was not ... and is not ... free software. I suppose, by some stretch we can call ed free software today because of the Heirloom Toolchest project. It's not entirely clear to me whether the version of ed is the original (released by Caldera or SCO) or a derived work (based on sources that were released) or a re-implementation. I'm certain that the GNU version of ed (as shipped with Red Hat Linux, for example) is a re-implemention.

In any event I'm not sure that ed properly quaulifies for the free software portal category, or emblem or whatever that is. If there's a "historical topics in computing" category it would be more appropriate.

Basque Portal?

Kaixo, I'm contacting you because you figure in Category:User eu, meaning that you speak some

Basque Country
.

I am thinking that maybe was a good idea to create a

Wikiproject
? or both?) on the Basque theme but I feel such kind of project requires more than just one person.

If you are interested, please comment in my talk page.

Appeal to Tradition

I have nothing against same-sex marriage. I just feel the inclusion of that tidbit contributes little to the article itself and is intentionally meant to inflame. 75.110.66.116

I clean up the discussion page regularly when a discussion has reached a point where it may be easily summarized at the top of the page. If you feel your points were not adequately covered in the summary, please feel free to put them back in, edit the summary, or tell me to put them back in. I hope that you keep helping us with the big task of making this article better, it's fun working with you on this project. Thanks hendrixski

Hi Isilanes. Were you addressing my comment on the Talk:Debian page, or the original poster? By the indentation, it looked like you were responding to me. pbryan 20:07, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Software Encylopedia

Hi Isilanes. It's a FREE software encyclopedia, it's relevant to the person who is searching for free software.

  • No. It is a "free encyclopedia" about "software", not an encyclopedia about "free software", which is the subject of the article. Moreover, in this context "free" means "free of charge" (as in "free beer"), not "embodying freedom" (as in "free speech"). Free software is all about the latter, whereas freeware would refer to the former. For both reasons, the link does not belong to the article. — Isilanes 12:16, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of Comparison of Windows and Linux

Hey, we've worked on the Windows v Linux article together for a while now, and I think that the article is very ready for a wider international audience. I have begun by translating parts of it into Polish, and soon hope to do some translation into French. I see that you have a nice array of languages on your user page, I was wondering if you would care to join me as we bring the comparison article to the rest of the world? Hendrixski 15:41, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had noticed your nice Polish contribution (easy to spot, because it is the only language other than English it is translated to). I was actually considering making the translation to Spanish (and maybe Basque), but I am a bit reluctant. I am 99.9% devoted to the English Wikipedia, and make little, if any, contribution elsewhere. Moreover, the W vs. L article is so volatile and lengthy, it scares me to no end to translate, because it will be "obsolete" before I translate a 1%. I also fear Spanish Wikipedians wasting their time in endless flamewars in parallel to English Wikipedians. However, the more reasons I give not to make the translations, the less convincing they sound to me. If I have time, I will consider doing it, ok? Thanks a lot for your encouragement. — Isilanes 20:38, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To Isilanes: No, I am not ironic, I say it seriously... but I understand your misgivings, after our little "battles"...

To Igor21: Do not be sarcastic, Igor21. Isilanes taught us (that includes me) a lesson. We wasted months going nowhere with the RfC, but Isilanes took a brillian initiative, doing an ardous and neutral work and creating an excellent RfC almost out of thin air.

When I see and individual taking good initiatives I feel obliged to congratulate, even if that individual is my adversary. Randroide 17:17, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chemical structure SVG conversions

Thanks for doing a great job on this backlog - one minor issue is that the guidelines at

Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemistry/Structure drawing advocate using a sans-serif font (Arial is specifically mentioned, so FreeSans would be an appropriate Linux alternative). The diagrams you're uploading are using a serif font (FreeSerif, I'm guessing). Is there any way to change your software settings so that the output uses sans-serif fonts? • Thank you for your time and comments. I especially like your overview approach and advising us not to get stuck in the nuance mud pit. I'm going to remember the word "pedantic" for when I would otherwise use the word for the specific part of the anatomy with a portal. Timhowardriley 19:27, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

United Linux

You sure that United Linux qualifies for the free software portal? jbolden1517Talk 00:03, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey, don't kill the messenger!:^) I just changed the old PNG logo of the Portal tag for a new SVG, but the tag itself was there before I arrived. Thanks for pointing out that. I just don't know... feel free to remove the tag. — isilanes (talk|contribs) 08:59, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VPN

Just a quick note to say that I have accidentally removed some of WP tags you've added to a VPN article today. If they need to be there, can you please re-add them ? The primary purpose of the edit was to remove the reference to a "VPN port number", which does not make much sense and definitely does not belong to a Summary section. Thanks. Cinnoline is indeed aromatic, but ..

Nice catch on cinnoline. If however we preface every description of a ring that is aromatic with that adjective and all other adjectives that are factual, then the articles get gummed up: Cinnoline is an

heterocycle. Hence we tend to leave off many adjectives when describing chemical compounds. Its the old thing about completeness vs comprehensibility. Cheers,--Smokefoot 20:24, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply

  • Hi. Thanks a lot for the interesting tip. I was stupidly concerned about "performance" issues. However, it is still worthwhile to change the
Fedora (Linux distribution) instances, since the current name of the distro is the latter. Thanks again. I will no longer change redirects unless somehow necessary. — isilanes (talk|contribs) 15:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply

Thanks for editing Xz

At one point, it did say that, though it appears to have changed.

As an aside, an author that releases code under GPL can indeed rescind his copyright on a later version and relinquish it to the public domain. Copyright law is the mechanism that allows this; note, however, that only the copyright holder can do that—nobody else can. Michael B. TrauschTalk to me 04:28, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was under the impression that, since version N+1 of software X is a derivative work of version N, the GPL in version N enforced the licensing of the N+1 under the GPL too. But the author being able to "break" it sounds reasonable, of course (obviously, as long as she doesn't try to de-GPL version N). Thanks for the note. — isilanes (talk|contribs) 08:42, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and help for atrane

Hello, Isilanes. How are you doing? Although your username is just a shorthand, what a nice username you have. It nicely reflects C2H4 polymerization with

titanocene et al, if C2H4 is substituted for silanes (I silanes equals Isilanes). I think polysilane can equally be made using group IV TM metallocenes on polymerizating disilane. Anyway, I might need a favor from you: referring to silatranes and amino acid, do you know any scholastic work on their similarities ? Both consist of a R- group and a bond between the central atom (C-N and C-Si) and nitrogen. Thanks in advance. -- Mountainninja (talk) 02:55, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the

WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:31, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply
