wise template editing and the criteria for revocation
.

You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.

This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. Chironomia

"With or without the use of the voice" means exactly what it says -- sometimes the use of handsigns was accompanied by the use of the voice (not necessarily only speaking), and sometimes it wasn't. AnonMoos (talk) 09:44, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

@AnonMoos: I guess I'm confused. Wouldn't the use of handsigns without voice be something entirely different from chironomia? And saying that it is of "great antiquity" seems like a huge understatement. Chimpanzees use at least 66 different hand gestures to communicate,[1] so "effective use of the hands" to communicate likely predates the human species and obviously wasn't limited to the Greeks and Romans. When the article says that use of the hands with or without the use of the voice was "developed and systematized by the Greeks and the Romans", what is it referring to? Is there some form of rhetoric that doesn't involve speaking? Not trying to be sarcastic, I'm just confused. Kaldari (talk) 15:27, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Natural gesturing is of indefinite ancientness, but in Classical antiquity, various subgroups had developed codified systems of gestural communication, of various degrees of elaborateness -- think of American football referees today. And the "with or without the use of the voice" sentence isn't explaining what Chironomia was -- it's explaining the background within which Chironomia developed... AnonMoos (talk) 20:08, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@AnonMoos: I did some digging and I figured out why the paragraph is so confusing. The original version of the article did actually describe Chironomia "as the art of gesticulating... with or without the assistance of the voice", and said it was "practiced by the Greeks and Romans" (all without any sources of course). In actuality, Chironomia is gesticulating while speaking (or more specifically, gesticulation as part of rhetorical delivery) and was developed and codified in the 1600s and has no specific direct relationship to Greek or Roman oration. (In fact, John Bulwer, who basically invented Chironomia, was apparently inspired by Francis Bacon's criticism that the Greeks ignored gesticulation. Apparently the Greeks were obsessed with cultivating their speaking voices instead.) Subsequent editors of the article tried to make it more factual, but left awkward remnants of the original version in ways that don't really make sense. Would it be OK with you if I try to clean-up the article with some significant revisions? Kaldari (talk) 22:12, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
The original article was likely confusing "chirologia" with "chironomia". Chirologia, which was also developed by John Bulwer, was basically an early form of sign language. Kaldari (talk) 23:01, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Sure, if that is what it is indicated by the facts. AnonMoos (talk) 02:51, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

question for you about citation bot

I assume we use "lighttpd" and not "lighttpd-plain" as our webservice.

https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Toolforge/Web/Lighttpd

I ask since it appears that for quite some time the bot was running TWO PHP servers instead of one since the default in lighttpd is to define one.

https://github.com/ms609/citation-bot/blob/master/.lighttpd.conf

This meant that category type runs ran over all the pages twice.

I am thinking that we could switch so that we control the PHP server, so we have more control. There is a bit of of a chicken and the egg situtation here, in that I don't want to update the httpd config file only to run two servers again, but even worse I don't want to switch servers only to have the config file set to run nothing.

AManWithNoPlan (talk) 14:24, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Or is it possible that the lighttpd config file does not get read since the php lives in a subdirectory? AManWithNoPlan (talk) 12:32, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
@AManWithNoPlan: Honestly I don't know. I don't have much knowledge of server administration. Is there a way I can check. I'm curious why you're not a maintainer on the citation tool. It seems like things would be easier for you to manage if you were. Apologies if you've already told me why and I forgot. Kaldari (talk) 15:16, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Can you change the service.template file (if there is one to say "cpu: 1000m" instead of the default value with is half a cpu. And then restart it. I am looking at getting an account. There were reasons I could not in the past. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 15:50, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@AManWithNoPlan: No, there is no service.template currently. I'd be happy to create one if you think it's useful. Kaldari (talk) 16:02, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
I think it would be a good idea. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 16:07, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@AManWithNoPlan: Done. I set it to 1 cpu and 4 gigs of memory. Kaldari (talk) 22:57, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
That helped. At some point I need to look at the lighttpd.conf file, but that can wait. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 21:36, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Your edit added information that Connie Meijer died of a heart attack during that criterium but that information does not appear in the cited source, a Der Spiegel article. I looked at her Wikipedia article and there's nothing there about her cause of death. I wanted you to know that I am reverting your edit and why. If you can find a reliable source, etc., etc. Thanks for editing the List. Shearonink (talk) 02:23, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

St John

Hi. If you can do it yourself, or maybe together with people you like to work with and can call up via talk-page, please try to rewrite that paragraph, because as of now almost none of it makes any sense, it's full of editing and logical mistakes making it almost incomprehensible. That "original research" could hardly have added any harm to it :)) Thank you, Arminden (talk) 17:55, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

@Arminden: That's a very good point! I know the gist of what the paragraph is trying to convey, but you are correct that it is poorly written and confusing. I'll try to rewrite it here soon. Kaldari (talk) 15:13, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Kaldari,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the

redirect whitelist

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Minor fixes to userscripts

Hey Kaldari, just FYI it looks like you've got a user script seemingly in use by others that has some bare javascript global wg-style variables, at User:Kaldari/wikilove.js. You've also got four others, but they're quite old and AFAICT they're unused:

@Cyberpower678: Re change[4] by InternetArchiveBot which I have reverted. Website http://www.travelmate.com.au/MapMaker/MapMaker.asp has been dead for some years and archived versions are available but they do not work as the javascript in it does not work. Hence I had flagged the reference as a dead link yesterday which the bot deleted but changed to an archived version which serves no purpose. I have flagged this link as dead in a number of locations with Werrimull‎ as recently as this morning. Can we stop the bot from archiving links to this website please. On 12 February I asked in Template_talk:Infobox_Australian_place that the travelmate website no longer be recommended for use because of its status but so far no action appears to have been taken.Fleet Lists (talk) 02:41, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@CyberTroopers: HotArticleBot is only able to run on a single wiki and is configured for English Wikipedia. In order to run on Malay Wikipedia, a new instance of the bot would need to be created and configured. New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Kaldari,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here
.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Kaldari,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 816 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 861 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Kaldari,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages.

WP:WPSCH/AG
has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 15317 articles, as of 16:00, 30 April 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at

WP:VPP
recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
