Clearout

I decided just to clear some stuff out, had stuff going back to 2006 on here and random WikiProjects that didn't make sense. --

March 2018

I noticed multiple edits that you have made to articles related to the WestJet group of airlines. Please note that not only is your username against our

change your username and adhere to our paid editing policy immediately. In the meanwhile, I have requested that your current username be blocked, as it is blatantly promotional. Please feel free to leave a message on my talk page in case you need any clarification. Thanks, Lourdes 06:05, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a
policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy or request a change of username.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. Thank you. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:02, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

Made this account eons ago, but new policy was put in place, can't be a brand name. Also, the claim about promotional editing/and representing a group is incorrect. I do NOT work for or represent WestJet or have been paid by WestJet to do anything to their pages. The edit I made on WestJet Encore was a grammar and style edit. WestJet (talk) 00:18, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Accept reason:

Globally renamed 'WestJet' to 'MattBinYYC' and unblocked. Just Chilling (talk) 01:40, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is the full list of all edits to the WestJet group of articles: [1][2][3][4][5][6] In one diff, you remove an uncited incident from a WestJet article. In another diff, you place a promotional puff about a new service to Glasgow. In one diff, you also have engaged in the talk page giving expert information on the group. If you have no relation to the group, why did you use a name that represents the group and why are you making these edits? Thanks, Lourdes 01:32, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have unblocked, following the rename, as required by policy since the block was a soft block. This is, however, without prejudice to a fresh, hard block if there is promotional editing or failure to comply with
    WP:PAID. Just Chilling (talk) 01:45, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply
    ]
I'll buy that. To avoid future issues, I'll additionally suggest restraining from editing WestJet articles, given the history of your name combined with edits to the articles. This is purely a suggestion and not anything more than that – as any significant future edit to any WestJet related article will come under scrutiny. Thanks, Lourdes 02:29, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Very unfortunate

It is unfortunate that you were blocked. I expressed this before you were blocked by asking an administrator if Wikipedia should look the other way or even change the policy. I can imagine that logging on and find that you have been banned (blocked in Wikipedia lingo) is upsetting. It is even upsetting to me.

The people who formulated the policy may believe that if a username is the same as a company, that means that you are a company employee. That is not true. Furthermore, if one was writing (editing in Wikipedia lingo) nefariously, all they need to do is make up a username not the same as a company. For example, if Petro Canada had a paid employee to write in Wikipedia, instead of choosing User:Petro Canada, they would just have to choose User:SaskatoonSally instead. It may be better for companies to be able to edit openly and have an obvious user name.

If you want to join me to try to change the policy so that you can regain your WestJet user name, let me know and we can, as a group force, try. Vanguard10 (talk) 03:31, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Vanguard10, it'll be a waste of time trying to change policy. Till the time Matt hadn't edited WestJet articles, the username would not have been blocked. If one wishes to edit "nefariously" (as you put it) and uses a name that is different than the corporation's name, their editing pattern should give them away (e.g. promotional edits, attempts to blank negative information). Anyway, my suggestion is to just get on with editing rather than attempting to change a tried and tested policy. Thanks, Lourdes 05:06, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good. As Lourdes pointed out, it was pretty much a blip on the radar because back in 2006 or whenever I signed up, I literally had no idea. I didn't appear on the radar for over a decade of edits before it was caught. I completely understand why they want the username changed, and to be honest it's good to have it be universal on my social media. Once me & Lourdes cleared it up, it was all good. Don't feel bad about it. MattBinYYC (talk) 08:11, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bracket editing

I saw you asking on IRC and in the Teahouse about editing the bracket in 2023 Leagues Cup, but did you get a resolution?

The details in the bracket are edited at the separate article 2023 Leagues Cup knockout stage.
