By the way, how are you finding old news articles about those search engines to back up the claims in those articles with references? I'd love to know so I could improve articles like those myself. Hello and thank you for the comments. First of all what I do is research the topic on the web, and I don't mean just a simple search but actually go in depth. I then also do searches using the "time" function that several search engines provide (inc. Google), and that makes me look for pages dated in e.g. 1996 or whatever I need. Some useful websites are difficult to find on the search engines but once you find it, it provides a lot of good information - in this case, searchengineshowdown.com. Once I found that, I started searching on the site for articles or information, which could then be added to wiki and backed up. In general, it is good to look for actual pages published in those days, rather than a later article that talks about history. Therefore, the Wayback Machine also proves useful in some cases. --Tim42 (talk) 14:43, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tim42: Thanks for responding! I also use the time function to preform searches, specifically on the Google News section of Google Search, but if you set the time function too far back on Google News, very few useful results appear, but it's good for more recent results from around 2009-today. I agree with the fact that the Wayback Machine can be useful as well because many news stories link to other news stories that no longer exist and lead to a 404 page and using the Wayback Machine lets you have access to those news stories via archives. I would also recommend using searchenginewatch.com and searchenginejournal.com since they have lots of articles that were published a while back about search engines, metasearch engines and directories. You're welcome! On Google, the News doesn't really show much. News is only useful if you're actually looking for news articles made recently or in recent years. Otherwise, it is better to use normal Search, especially when looking for particularly old content. And yes, the Wayback Machine is very useful, I managed to add a lot of information here to wiki (including uploading screenshots) thanks to that, a lot of information that was missing or unsourced. @Tim42: That's true, If you are trying to look for older content, then using Google Search is better than using Google News. I would also recommend using books since they contain a lot of useful info that can't be found online, especially when it comes to stuff that existed before the Internet became mainstream. I understand that books cost money and tracking certain ones down can be a bit difficult, but Google offers Google Books, which allows you to view a preview of a book without paying a single cent, so it's much easier to find useful info in books there. Oh my mistake, I have seen books too for this, just not physical ones. Yes I've used Google Books for research too. Also it should be noted that some info I gathered was difficult to track because they're not covered in the media. For example, MetaCrawler merging into Zoo.com - of course by that time (2014) MetaCrawler had long been relatively unknown, let alone Zoo.com. I haven't been able to find a published article about the "merge", so the only source I had was the Wayback Machine. --Tim42 (talk) 01:07, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tim42: That's also true, a lot of info about obscure things, such as the MetaCrawler and Zoo.com merger, isn't covered in the media, and thus, the Wayback Machine is a useful source in those cases.
