Move

Hello. I would like to kindly request you to undo this move. The request was made by a troll and sockpuppeteer currently banned in his home wiki, and contradicts RS (online encyclopedia, National Archives, etc). JMagalhães (talk) 10:35, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

I can. Please make a request at
WP:RM/TR, which is where the previous move was requested. Please file it in the "Request to revert undiscussed moves". I or another page mover will handle it in due time. - UtherSRG (talk)

Hey, UtherSRG,

It looks like you were doing some page moves today but this page is a circular redirect, redirected to itself. Should it be pointing to a different target article or not be a redirect at all? Thanks for any clarification you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 17:27, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Whoops! Yup, got distracted. I'll fix it up. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:29, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Thank you!

Hello, UtherSRG,

I hope you are well. I just wanted to stop by and give you a thanks for all of the reversions of Kainaaz1970's bad page moves that you did. Frequently, when well-intentioned page movers revert a bad page move, they don't leave behind a redirect which can cause all sorts of problems. Wikipedia's bots are very alert and when there is a page move, whether bad or good, within minutes they have changed all of the existing redirects for that article to point to its new title. Even when a bad page move is quickly reverted, if there is no redirect left behind, we are left with a lot of valid redirects which are now broken and have to be fixed manually or, worse, they can simply be deleted by a bot. When a redirect is left after a page move, then the bots can fix the double redirects and so the old, valid redirects now point once again to the original, restored target page. This is especially important with older or very popular articles that might have a lot of redirects.

I'm not sure why some eager page movers don't like to leave a redirect behind after a page move but it seeems like I'm constantly leaving notes asking them to check "What links here" when deciding whether or not to leave a redirect. In your case, I didn't have to because you left redirects! So, thank you! If the bad page title is truly atrocious or is vandalism, it can always be deleted later, after the existing redirects have been retargeted. But, again, thanks, now there will be fewer pages showing up on our Broken Redirects list!. Liz Read! Talk! 21:18, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Aw! Thanks! :) That felt good. So yeah, I normally "forget" to unclick the redirect button when I do a move. Most of the time, I want a redirect left behind for exactly the reasons you stated. I guess it's a user preference setting? I probably caught a bit of trouble early in my Wikipedia career, set the preference, and forgot about it. So yeah, redirects are cheap, and better to have one that's not needed, than to have something broken that's hard to fix. - UtherSRG (talk) 22:33, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for your help on Wolf Maps; Requesting a bit more

Good morning,

Thank you for the advice on how to request a Wolf Map update on the Mexican Wolf page. I placed a request on the Graphics Lab page. Since it's my first time, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at the request to make sure I filled it out properly?

Thank you again! Bbreslau (talk) 07:26, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

It's.... ok. Look at the Nutria range map section and the next few that follow. Much simpler, they show the current map, etc. If you used hte "New request" link at the top of the page, it provided the template format to edit and fill in. Also note that the Nutria etc range map requests have been there for almost two weeks, so don't worry, it takes time. Remember,
there is no deadline and they are volunteers just as you and I are. If they have a problem with the format of your request, they'll eventually let you know. - UtherSRG (talk)

UUA report edit summary removed; am I good?

Hi, just wanted to clarify if I did something wrong in my UUA report (diff), when reporting a user with a very offensive Spanish userid. I can no longer view the report, and the summary field in the history now reads edit summary removed (revdel'ed, I presume). I can't remember what my edit summary was, but probably I placed the username there; was that wrong? You appear to have cleared it in this edit, if I'm reading the history correctly, which also appears struck out. For future reference, what should I place in the edit summary, if not the username? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 23:37, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, I can't see it either. I recall when I cleared it that the report was only partially formed. When I report to UAA, I use WP:Twinkle and don't think about what to put in the summary, though it does appear that including the username is standard. shrugs - UtherSRG (talk) 23:47, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Hm, thanks; I kind of assumed you did the revdel, as it was the last edit before it disappeared. Do you know how to search a log, to see if that will help figure out who did it, so I can ask them if I need to do something different next time? Mathglot (talk) 01:57, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
It looks like Filelakeshoe did the revdel. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:55, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
I didn't do this, it's been fully suppressed by someone from the oversight team which I'm not a part of. But Mathglot you did nothing wrong, UAA reports with highly offensive usernames need to be revdelled anyway to remove the revision text, removing the edit summary just requires ticking an extra box on the form. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 12:08, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Restored drafts

Hello, UtherSRG,

I hope you are well. Lately, I've come across several draft articles that you restored that had no edits made to them so they showed up on the eligible to be deleted list (User:SDZeroBot/G13 eligible). I just made an edit to the first few but with the latest draft and I looked at it and saw that you used Rfud-helper so I'm not sure why this problem is happening as making an edit to the restored draft is an action that is supposed to be done by the script. Could you consider double-checking drafts that you restore to see how often this is happening? Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 00:46, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Can do. Sorry about that. - UtherSRG (talk) 01:44, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Uther SRG, You declined the submission of my article on 6th Feb and made some very useful comments about the state of the page at that time. I have worked hard on the voice and tone of the article since and hope that the format is now encyclopedic. There are many new published independent references and I hope I have removed all "peacock terms". I would be really grateful, if you get a spare moment, if you could let me know that I am now on the right track with my work. Ready to Be redirect

Hi there! I understand your concearn about the article not being published since the subject hasn't come out, i understand your point, however the subject has significant media coverage and is only up to 5 days of release, a lot of information is to be collected and by making the article in the first of day of its release would only worsen its quality, the article needs to be published days after since a lot of it has been confirmed and is known, it would be easier when it comes out this March 10, editors wouldn't be doing massive editing everytime and get into arguments with each other while adding information, a lot of disagreement and fight is expected to happen, let this happen before people outside WP enters to see the album information and see everything going on, it would only give a bad view to WP. Lightlylove (talk) 00:24, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Indeed. So work it in draft instead. Don't go against our policies. I'm moving it to draft now. UtherSRG (talk) 00:31, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

But if you move it to draft, the article would take months to get accepted and a new one would be published right away, so having a draft of the same subject that have been published won't make any sense. Lightlylove (talk) 00:47, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Drafts don't have to be reviewed. I usually prefer they do, but this is clearly there just to be within policy. Just poke me when the time is right and I'll move it back form draft. - UtherSRG (talk) 03:57, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Raccoon dog

Did you move Raccoon dog back to Common raccoon dog because you felt that was a better title, or because it was not discussed? Abductive (reasoning) 20:24, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Both. It's been moved before. There are two species of raccoon dog - the common and the Japanese. The move is not correct. - UtherSRG (talk) 20:25, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
It was moved before, true, but was not discussed. Anyway, if I can't convince editors such as yourself that Wikipedia should not (and in many cases already does not) blindly follow the MDD guys, should I bother to make an RM? Abductive (reasoning) 20:34, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Your call. We aren't blindly following. In addition to using MDD for this name, using the name you want causes an ambiguation. There are two species called raccoon dog, so that title is better used for the genus or, as it is now, a redirect to there. - UtherSRG (talk) 20:37, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Sigh. "common raccoon dog" -wikipedia has all of 81 Google hits. 57 if you remove COVID. Abductive (reasoning) 20:45, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Did you think editing Wikipedia would not be filled with disappointments? *there, there* - UtherSRG (talk) 20:48, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
You know, WP:Article titles, which is a policy, says to use the common name. I'm not arguing for elimination of the redirect common raccoon dog to raccoon dog, I'm talking about the title. I feel that you are bordering on abusive here, both in using your admin powers rather than suggest opening a discussion, and by your condescending tone above. Hello, UtherSRG,

This article, which was deleted through an AFD, was restored by you today to Draft space and then immediately moved to main space. I really hate it when editors ask for articles to be draftified and then disregard the generosity of the admin who granted their request by leapfrogging over AFC and going directly to main space. Just something to keep in mind if this editor returns to REFUND with a similar request in the future. Liz Read! Talk! 06:00, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, I was aware this was a possibility. However, the article was deleted for a very narrow reason, and time marched on and that narrow reason became moot, and the editor had the sources to show that. I think the only thing I'd do differently is that in my restoration note, I'd say that the draft must go through AFC review. - UtherSRG (talk) 12:18, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
I know, you wanted to extend good faith and most editors, I've found, play by the rules. I just wanted to give you a head's up in case this editor returns to REFUND with a similar request. I hope you are having a good week! Liz Read! Talk! 00:21, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

External Links on Chu Tat-shing draft

I see you removed the external links section from the Chu Tat-shing draft page that I learned from you how to make. Is this because the links were redundant? I put them there as a test to see if I could make it. If redundant links are not good in such a section, what type are? What about an external Chu Tat-shing webpage? Or, is it better to put all external links as references with a description in the body text of the article? LaoHu777 (talk) 16:31, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Page moves and broken redirects

Hello, again, UtherSRG,

When you do a page move, please leave a redirect behind unless you are sure there are no redirects to this article. You moved List of iPhone models without leaving a redirect which created 43 broken redirect pages (see User:AnomieBOT III/Broken redirects). Unfortunately, even though these are valid redirects, a bot can delete these pages once they are seen as broken. I have created a temporary redirect so that Wikipedia's bots can correct all of these double redirects and point them to the correct target page. When you don't leave a redirect, then the bots don't know what to do.

Most of the time, with articles less popular than this, they can be manually fixed by an admin patrolling AnomieBOT's reports but in cases like this, where there are a lot of broken redirects, it's easier to let our bots fix the problem. Just thought I'd give you a head's up if you are asked to move a popular article again in the future. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 03:05, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Yup, I thought I had checked this one. Sorry. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:06, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Another page move issue that it seems you aren't aware of: articles should not be moved while they are being linked to from the Main Page as per

WP:MPNOREDIRECT. Nothing should ever be so urgent that it can't wait a few hours. If it is urgent, please ask an administrator to move it as only admins can edit the Main Page to remove the redirect there. Schwede66

Seyed Ali Mousavi Noor

Hi UtherSRG, hope you are well. Regarding Seyed Ali Mousavi Noor, I saw this log on its deletion/ status/ draft added on 8/9 February. The log mentions the existence of a draft, which is still the case, with a submission decline by Misterrrrr on the 9th. However, the authoring account recreated the article on the the 10th (adding "(karate)" to the page name). The account was globally locked on the 23rd of February. Also globally locked is contributing/ related account Amirhasaninoor. I participated in the deletion of the article on the ptwiki, most of the content was false/ falsified, which led me to delete most of it here on the enwiki in this edit, so I can vouch for its unencyclopedicness. The botanical code recognizes multiple ranks below species (subspecies, variety, form). The botanical code doesn't have the zoological codes principle of coordination, by which publishing a subspecies name automatically counts as publishing that name at species rank (and conversely, publishing a species counts as publishing it as a subspecies under every other species in the genus). Under the botanical code, any change in rank requires formal publication; it can not be assumed that a name published at the rank of subspecies exists when a name has been published at the rank of variety (or vice-versa). It is important to specify the rank of infraspecific botanical taxa. {{Infraspeciesbox}} should be used for botanical taxa; it shows the rank, via specifying |subspecies= or |varietas=.

Wikipedia is very consistent in using the abbreviation "subsp." in the titles of articles about botanical subspecies (lists of subspecies in species articles such as Chylismia claviformis are less consistent). "Subsp." follows the example of the botanical code and many taxonomic databases, but as far as I'm aware, "ssp." isn't wrong, and writing out "subspecies" in full is always an option.

That said, Chylismia claviformis subsp. peirsonii is a garbage article. The prose didn't provide any practical context whatsoever (I added that it was a "plant", which is still pathetic). I don't think it should have been moved out of draft space in the first place in the state it was in. I intend to redirect it in a week or so if the article creator doesn't do anything to expand it. Yeah mate, no worries. It's all about improving the encyclopedia, eh? I've been trolling the AFC/recent list for awhile now to make these kinds of improvements. Over the last few days I've started making a list of what I've done to accepted articles that I think any general reviewer should have done. (I want the AFCH tool updated to point out at least some of these potential issues.... so far only one issue is being tracked for an update...) The only one of yours on that list was today's bellflower article was missing a short description. The rest of the changes I do that I'm not logging are more specialized knowledge edits, such as the specialized redirect tag you thanked me about. Those come with time and seeing them a few dozen times. Cheers! - UtherSRG (talk) 16:32, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Gadabuursi alphabet

Just FYI that your move might need to be reversed if the NCWS is changed or simply left as-is per the RfC to clarify this kind of situation (whether the script or alphabet is primary in an article that covers both), since that is one of the two topics in the RfC. — kwami (talk) 22:29, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't care either way. - UtherSRG (talk) 23:18, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
That is in fact not one of the proposals made by the current RFC. And you yourself had declared earlier on the same talkpage: "Any alphabet article is likely to have some background info on the script, esp. if the script is predominantly a single alphabet, and I don't see how calling in an 'alphabet' would make the article hostile to such info...." [kwami, 12:56, 5 August 2011 (UTC)]
In any case, the current text of
WP:NCWS#Alphabets reads: "'Alphabet' is used for language-specific adaptations of a segmental script, usually with a defined sorting order and sometimes with not all of the letters, or with additional letters" — according to which Gadabuursi (a single alphabet specific to the Somali language) is an alphabet — and the RFC does not propose that it isn't. – .Raven  .talk

Greetings. I noticed that you have just undeleted this article for a second time at

WP:REFUND. You restored it the first time as a contested soft delete a week and a half ago per the previous AfD result at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lady Slim, but the article was then renominated and deleted per a more definitive result at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lady Slim (2nd nomination), so I’m curious as to why it was restored yet again. Why are you mocking me? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 11:27, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
Why did you waste my time with asking if you can ask a question? Just ask the question. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:30, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

That wasn't the main reason I queried it. The main reason I queried it was that those names are not used in our articles. I wanted to see what the OP had to say. Dr. Vogel (talk) 12:24, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

The lede usage doesn't have to change before the article is moved. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:39, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Of course. But looking at those 2 articles now, a couple of days later, they still haven't been edited to reflect the new title. I feel that it's more orderly to ask people to reflect the changes in the article so that we don't end up with a mismatch where there didn't use to be one. And typically pointing that out in the request does the trick of encouraging people. And another benefit of asking them to edit the lead first, is that it gives other people who have the article watchlisted a chance to see it on their radar before the article is moved, as they may be completely unaware that there's a pending request at RMTR. Do we have any rules that apply to this? Dr. Vogel (talk) 21:48, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough. We have no such rules. - UtherSRG (talk) 10:46, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

FYI, in a move review not about your closures...

... Wikipedia:Move_review/Log/2023_May#N'Ko_script, the move requests you did close, along with this one you didn't, were brought up (by kwami, who else?) as some sort of offense: "Raven has submitted nine duplicate RfM's…. … the multiple recent moves of articles on single-language scripts to 'X alphabet'… should probably be reviewed, as an attempt by Raven to preempt the decision at NCWS." Whether or not you choose to read that, and even possibly comment, is of course up to you. – .Raven  .talk 04:54, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

Heading Caps on Narita Viliamu Tahega

Thanks for reviewing Narita Viliamu Tahega for cleanup. I took care of the punctuation / ref order, but could you please confirm what needs to be fixed with the header caps? Comment

Hey, UtherSRG,

I hope you are well as we creep into summer. I'd like to request that after you restore an article that has been PROD'd or gone through AFD, just glance at the article afterwards and make sure everything is okay with it. I just ran into

Draft:Yasubey Enomoto that had an old PROD tag on it and I came across another article the other day that was restored from an AFD soft delete decision still had the AFD tag on it. I don't think you can simply rely on scripts with these article restorations, you have to just look at them after restoration and make sure they have no previous deletion tags on the articles that are no longer relevant. @
WP:MRV. For NTEN, there are other articles where we retain the full caps, like BAE Systems. - UtherSRG (talk)
20:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining. So, if I understand: 1) MRV is always the venue, even if it's a non-admin closure and the discussion is obviously not clear cut. 2) I had been taught before that if it's not an acronym and the upper case letters are only for style, that's frowned upon. But I will remember the example you're giving me (although I did think that BAE stood for "British Aerospace Electronics", and that's why we use the upper case letters in the title). Dr. Vogel (talk) 17:22, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
BAe was an acronym for British Aerospace. After the merger and rebranding to BAE, it no longer stands for anything. - UtherSRG (talk) 10:36, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Page move on The North Fork Windmills

I think it was buried - as Orient Windmills without the context leads to the supposition that these are somewhere in Asia. As I mentioned in the talk, the move (with input) was to Southold Windmills, or Southold Windmills, NY, which helps when searching. If Windmills of the North Fork is unworkable, why not 'Southold Windmills'? CaptJayRuffins (talk) 21:25, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, UtherSRG,

I understand when you have 12 or 13 names, it can be tricky to settle on a page title but do you know why these articles keep being moved around? Leaf-nosed bat

Hi! Regarding your reversion of my edit on Leaf-nosed bat, I believe that "Phyllostomidae" is a plural noun. The -ae ending is a Latin plural, and the rest of the article treats it as plural. For example, the lead opens "The New World leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) are found ...", the Evolution section begins "The Phyllostomidae, also known as New World leaf-nosed bats, are among ...", the Diet section begins "The Phyllostomidae demonstrate", etc. What do you think? CodeTalker (talk) 02:00, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

@CodeTalker: It depends on the usage. You picked out one kind, where the members are considered the primary noun. But consider "The family Phyllostomidae is in the order ...." where the family itself is the primary noun. This is the same sense it is being used in the sentence I reverted. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:01, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Well, I'm not entirely convinced. If I consider substituting the common name "leaf-nosed bats" in place of "Phyllostomidae" to keep everything in English, then the correct version of the sentence in question would be "The leaf-nosed bats consist of 55 genera..." not "The leaf-nosed bat consists of 55 genera...". But it's not really that important, so I will drop it. CodeTalker (talk) 20:23, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Question regarding deletion of Brad Raider

You added more context of who I am on the discussion of Brad Raider, which is fine as it provides more information about who I am. However, it limits that scope to just my Wikipedia contributions of which I admit I am not an active part of the community. A more complete profile would also include my Twitter where yes I have been involved in discussing topics surrounding Psych for over a decade. Should that be included also as that is additional context outside of the notion I have single objective to sway Wikipedia?

I admit being a fan and knowledge of this subject may make me biased, but I am also trying to provide additional context which is greatly lacking in the discussion I have seen so far. That is why I added additional sources (NY Times, Variety, LA Times) to the Red Dog Squadron article that have been called into question for notability and got my attention. Wikipedia can ultimately take it or leave it, but its clear Wikipedia has targeted that theatre for some bizarre reason as it seems so clearly notable from what they've done and who's been involved over the years. I agree the articles should be improved, but that shouldn't be a motivating factor for deleting them. I can only hope that reason prevails here. Itsdannyg (talk) 14:04, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Our primary guiding principle of inclusion in the encyclopedia is our own particular notion of
WP:AFD is. One's breadth of activity on Wikipedia, or lack thereof, is sometimes used to indicate whether one understands our community and our policies, or whether one is focused purely on their own pet subject without regards to the betterment (or degradation) of the encyclopedia. What one is interested in off of the encyclopedia has very little bearing on that. - UtherSRG (talk)
15:04, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
The bearing my interest has is that I am bringing information to the conversation that was lacking prior. The conversation seems to reveal lack of knowledge on the subject. Which is why I added sources to an article that was NOT marked for
WP:AFD as you indicate, but rather Wikipedia:Proposed_deletion indicating it wasn't even controversial even though it has been referenced in multiple well-known sources. These measures indicate a clear lack of knowledge about Psych and James Roday Rodriguez. Itsdannyg (talk
) 15:35, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
Information on the subject is irrelevant. Please read 15:38, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
So that article doesn't merit a
WP:AFD that has a discussion? The article was proposed for deletion without discussion so it was targeted. "Targeting is one of the reasons we require a community decision" -- those are your words but an attempt was made to bypass that discussion. Wikipedia:Notability requires "Significant coverage", "Reliable", "Sources", "Independent of the subject" all of which I attempted to add. If NY Times and Variety isn't good enough, I'm not sure what Wikipedia is referencing and will think twice before continuing to use it for reference. Itsdannyg (talk

Hey @UtherSRG: It wasn't empty when I stumbled upon it either. However, it was a duplicate of Category:Spanish football clubs 2001–02 season, using a hyphen instead of an en dash.. It looks like you created it based on a red category added to 2001–02 RCD Espanyol season. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:33, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Block evasion

Hello. After you blocked NormalGuyUK on June 18 (1) a new account (2) appeared on June 19 making the same kinds of edits they did. One of the first things they did was change a section name to Anglo-American intervention of Communist Albania as they tried here, creation of a draft about a "Planned invasion of Yugoslavia that was part of an article NGU made that was deleted. --Griboski (talk) 14:35, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Thanks. There is also this SPI that was completed a long time ago involving this user. It should be closed and archived. Just figured I'd throw it out there as it's been a long time. --Griboski (talk) 23:25, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Undeleting the Constitution Party of North Carolina

Hello, I'm Average Ninja and I was directed to you to talk about unmerging this article from the national Constitution Party.

The reasoning for my wish to have this specific article undeleted is because circumstances revolving around the state-affiliated party had changed. At the time the deletion process was occurring, the Constitution Party of North Carolina didn't have ballot access at that point. It wouldn't be until 2018 that they would have ballot access in the state. Furthermore, there wasn't any information that made the state-affiliated party distinct from the national party at the time. I want to be able to share that information that has developed since then in its own wikipedia page. Average Ninja (talk) 13:13, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

No, I directed you to Roy Smith. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:14, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Postwar Britain

Um, it ended up at the title with the disambiguator because of History of the United Kingdom (1945–present) the fact that "postwar" did not end in 1979 and following a split. I can't work out where the talk page with the discussion has ended up now, but you can see it in the history here. You need to revert your undiscussed move, then you can check all the incoming links to all the redirects, and then you can find the right talk pages for the right pages. Hello, UtherSRG. Now I saw you reverted my deletion request for Statue of Miyamoto Musashi. I request deletion by criteria G5, but you reverted this because page creator is not blocked yet.

However, as you can see at Special:CentralAuth/Faitsetdocuments, page creator 'Faitsetdocuments' is blocked at frwiki since this account is sock of fr:Wikipédia:Faux-nez/Praelongum. Praelongum is global locked account (Special:CentralAuth/Praelongum), so apparently, Faitsetdocuments will be global locked, too. Isn't is enough to apply G5 for criteria of speedy deletion? Thank you. LR0725 [ Talk | Contribs ] 13:33, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

The tag you placed didn't have any information that linked Faitsetdocuments to Praelongum. I'll G5 now. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:36, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Maybe I missed it while global patrolling. Thank you! LR0725 [ Talk | Contribs ] 13:37, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Mahmoud Eskandari

WP:G11 for Mahmoud Eskandari? its not fair. at least make it Nomination of Mahmoud Eskandari for deletion. like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yadollah Khalili or Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Khalil Dashtizadeh. This article will never include the speed delete.--Patricia (Talk)
12:42, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

You think this isn't promotional? The truth about Colonel Mahmoud Eskandari is now available on YouTube thanking the technology that can be used to show the reality. His very high knowledge of flight accompanied by his very high flying skills when he was a smart and humble person made him a remarkable shining star in the galaxy of Iranian fighter pilots. Fame and popularity are the most simple words to show how the other pilots knew him. - UtherSRG (talk) 12:46, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
The paragraph you mentioned or the praise should be removed, not the entire article. with all due respect I still insist that this article be revived and send Nomination of Mahmoud Eskandari for deletion.

Comment

Hello, UtherSRG,

I hope you know that I admire you as an editor and admin. But as the editor who brought the SPI against Manalbare, I don't think you should be reviewing their unblock request. I think filing the SPI case that got the account blocked makes you involved. You might disagree but I think in these cases, it's better to let someone else handle an unblock request. Thanks for all of your many contributions to the project. Liz Read! Talk! 03:15, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Question about
Draft:Princess Bee
page

Dear UtherSRG yesterday I saw you reverted page "Princess Bee" from soft delete state to draft. Hoping it can be useful I have provided the talk page with a reviewed version of the page itself without those parts that, according to me, have not encyclopedic value. Please can you review the page and let me know next steps? Is there any procedure to re-valuate a page to be moved from soft delete to published? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Videa79 (talkcontribs) 09:23, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

For a start, don't do that; don't re-draft an article or draft on its talk page. Make the edits in the right place so that differences can be seen. I've moved your rewrite into the draft itself. Second, I have no interest in the subject or reviewing it. I merely provided you a method of getting the work done in a manner that shields you from it being immediately send back to AFD. I will tag it as a draft and submit it to review for you. - UtherSRG (talk) 10:50, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
@Videa79: I suggest you read the deletion discussion (scant as it may be) and then seek assistance from The Teahouse, where there are folks who regularly handle helping out in this way. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:42, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

My draft

Hi, please could you let me know why you have submitted my draft,

User:TSventon/sandbox/Notre Dame College of Education (Glasgow), to AfC rather than publishing it? Is it controversial in some way? TSventon (talk
) 18:39, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

I strongly prefer to have new articles go through review, especially when there is even just a redirect in place. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:09, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
If you are following your own preference, rather than policy or consensus at RM/TR, please can you reconsider and either publish the article or return it to the RM/TR queue for another page mover to deal with. Otherwise presumably I can presumably start a RM.. I am willing to answer questions about the article, but think it is a low risk to Wikipedia as the college has been defunct for forty years and I am an experienced editor and can confirm I have no conflict of interest. TSventon (talk) 10:18, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough. I probably should have allowed someone else to handle it. I've taken a look and used AFCH to accept it. This allowed me to see some additional projects to put it in I wouldn't have thought of. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:38, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for dealing with this, it looks fine now. And I see it is autopatrolled at

Yeah, AFC has some additional value. I think more people should use it, and even more important, more people should become reviewers. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:21, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
I have put some articles through DYK, which means that they get an extra review following NPP. I can see you are doing a lot of the RM/T work, which I have just added to. TSventon (talk) 12:32, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

User 122.176.200.137

Hello @UtherSRG. I am here to reporting the Disruption of user 122.176.200.137 on multiple pages with Pro Muslim edits without clarification. Here are some of the examples : 1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1169665513 2. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1169664035 3. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1169665513

One thing here to be noted that I have highly doubt that this account is a Sockpuppet of one of the Wikipedia user. & As per history edits of "battle of sangamner" I suppose it's of @ThePakistanihistorian. By the I just suppose to it. Aryan330 (talk) 18:51, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

See he was also notified by one user for not giving clarification. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:122.176.200.137 I am saying here that he is Disrupting pages by giving exact opposite statements which follows same pattern(like releted to Muslim Dynasty) That's what should be noted. Hello, UtherSRG,

I guess RFUD-helper doesn't take care of everything because after it was restored, this article needed the AFD tag removed. Just thought I'd give you a head's up and also thank you again for being so helpful on my User talk page. For some reason, the talk page gets an awful lot of traffic and because I have a lot of tasks on my schedule to get to, I often delay responding until the end of the day unless it is an emergency like a revision deletion request. So I appreciate when you choose to reply to an editor in need. I'm trying to improve my habits here as it can lead to frustration on the part of other editors. Thanks again. Liz Read! I'm not sure that's doable with the open RM. I'm not sure what all the bot needs to see, so making the move will need to go along with the additional changes. If you are willing to make the fixes (other than the actual RM itself), I'll make the move. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:06, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to Cornell study on Wikipedia discussions

Hello UtherSRG,

I’m reaching out as part of a Cornell University academic study investigating the potential for user-facing tools to help improve discussion quality within Wikipedia discussion spaces (such as talk pages, noticeboards, etc.). We wanted to invite you to join the study because you are fairly active on discussions in talk pages and WP project pages (including prominent ones like AfD and RFU). We anticipate that user-facing discussion tools might be of particular use in the kind of back-and-forth dicussions that tend to take place within those spaces.

The study centers around a prototype tool, ConvoWizard, which is designed to warn Wikipedia editors when a discussion they are replying to is getting tense and at risk of derailing into personal attacks or incivility. More information about ConvoWizard and the study can be found at our research project page on meta-wiki.

If this sounds like it might be interesting to you, you can use this link to sign up and install ConvoWizard. Of course, if you are not interested, feel free to ignore this message.

If you have any questions or thoughts about the study, our team is happy to discuss! You may direct such comments to me or to my collaborator, Cristian_at_CornellNLP. Thank you for your consideration.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/En pièces détachées

Please remember that a French-language song is likely to have an article in the French-language Wikipedia, possibly with more extensive references than the English one. Please see fr:En pièces détachées Eastmain (talkcontribs) 19:00, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, though I won't be checking there. My purpose is to get all of the articles that have been tagged for notability since 2010 cleared off the list. I don't care if any are deleted or kept. I'll leave that for the folks who !vote in the discussions. That seems to have been working, so I'll keep going as I have been. I *do* rm the tag myself on some articles, and I'm happy when the discussion for an article saves it. You are welcome to jump ahead and check the list I'm working through to see if there are any you want to work on before I get to them. I usually do something like 6-12 a day (one or two letters) so as to not unduly burden the AFD system. - UtherSRG (talk) 19:27, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

It does the same basic job as the previous script, so i don't think I should rename it. You'll have to comment out/remove Evad's version in your common.js file. I'll make sure to give these details the next time i try to get someone to switch scripts. :-) -MPGuy2824 (talk) 11:30, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
@
WP:RFU. However, the requestor wasn't one of the editors of the article, so I couldn't use the tool to send the draftification notice to them. It would be nice if we could write in additional users to notify. - UtherSRG (talk)
18:59, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
If I understand it right, you undelete an article in mainspace, and then immediate move it to draftspace. The problem is that the message that the script sends is targeted to previous contributors: "Thank you for your contributions to X". Since you are already going to add a message to the undeletion requester on the
WP:RFU page, I'd suggest that no contributors be notified by the MTD script in such a case. -MPGuy2824 (talk
) 06:01, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
It wasn't that simple. Another user restored the page, but later I draftified it. - UtherSRG (talk) 10:22, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

AFDs

Hello, UtherSRG,

You nominate so many articles at AFD, with just a minute or two between nominations, I don't see how you can be doing a proper BEFORE. What is your process of looking into these articles before you decide to nominate them for deletion? Just looking through the day's AFD log and considering closures, it can seem overwhelming with the volume of your nominations. I don't see how you have the time to properly investigate each article subject. My rough guesstimate right now is that about 70% of the articles you nominate for deletion end up being deleted so there are a fair number of them that are Kept or Merged. So, my questions are not about whether or not these articles should be deleted, but the process and volume of deletion proposals.

Thanks for your work on the project. Liz Read! Talk! 18:50, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

@Liz: I admit, I do only the most cursory of BEFORE. I don't do any searches, I don't usually open the existing references. If there are any references, I check what facts the references are supporting, and check the title of the references. That's about it. I'm hitting articles on the NN by month lists (currently on Category:Articles with topics of unclear notability from June 2010). 13 years is long enough for someone to have given a proper BEFORE a shot, so I'm doing a minor IAR and skipping a thorough BEFORE to get them onto other peoples' radars by AFD'ing them. (There are a few I do just simply remove the NN tag.) I'm as happy to have an article reach a consensus regardless of the outcome, as it means the article is being taken off of the NN list; indeed, many have been significantly improved by the work others have done in finding sources. When an article is kept, if it hasn't been updated since my nomination, I post on the talk page a gentle reminder about the discovered sources and a ping of those who found them.
I'm aware of
WP:NOTCLEANUP; in fact it's been stated a small number of times in my AFD nominations. I know we have no deadlines; yet at the same time, we put deadlines on some processes. Some of those deadlines are hard, and some are soft. At the same time, we have roughly 58k+ articles tagged for notability; tagged for the primary reason something shouldn't be an article. I don't think the existence of articles that have been tagged for 13 years stating they probably aren't something that should be included in the encyclopedia is beneficial to the encyclopedia. So most days I scrape through a dozen or so articles from the NN list and give them a nudge into the light where they will get some attention. - UtherSRG (talk)

I don't know why your talk page is on my watchlist, but since it is I'll just throw my two cents in; I agree that
WP:BEFORE
is just a recommendation, not a requirement - the requirement is that an editor has a reasonable rate of accuracy with their nominations, and it appears that you do have that. I would suggest at least checking the existing references, but your process appears to be working despite not doing that so I'm not really concerned with you not doing so.
I also agree that so long as there are no limits on the rates an editor can create pages, it isn't reasonable to apply limit to the rate editors can nominate pages for deletion. BilledMammal (talk) 12:03, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

G6: Deleted to make way for move

Hello

Sheezan Mohammed Khan moved to Sheezan Khan, I tried to make a move during the media trial regarding the subject on New Year's Eve but failed so I let it go. Are you asking me to do the CSD, or asking me to explain why you can't do it? - UtherSRG (talk) 11:51, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
@UtherSRG Did you get a chance to check both the article log?. You can see the article is moved by an editor/volunteer who don't hold any advance permission. So, yes I'm asking and trying to understand why I'm not able to make such an action/edit/move on my own. If you would go through my contribution you will find out that I had to always seek admins attention. Thanks C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 16:20, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

@
Sheezan Mohammed Khan. It's just an example article which I listed, but whenever I try to do G6: Deleted to make way for move, on my own it declined. So I'm not sure what is restricting me, I'm okay with seeking admins attention for G6 but sometimes I feel disappointed. C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂

Hello, UtherSRG,

I saw all of these template moves in the Move log and wondered whether the content of the instructions on the page need to be changed now that the template name has changed. They still list using the previous names and I'm not sure this will work now that those pages are redirects. I'm not really knowledgeable about how templates work so many some of the editors or admins who frequent TFD would know about this. Thanks. I hope you are having a good weekend. Liz Read! The Micronesian-Corsican Revolution G5's

Hey, I noticed you made some

WP:G5 deletions referencing User:The Micronesian-Corsican Revolution. However, I don't see that they have been blocked before today? If so, there is no way for User:TheElvisBelievingBumbleBee to have created those pages in violation of a block or ban. -- Tavix (talk
) 19:19, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

I went a bit bold. One of the accounts was created in 2019. They knew they were doing wrong, so I nuked all of EBBB's creations. - UtherSRG (talk) 10:43, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
I disagree. Age of creation of account is irrelevant, especially given that The Micronesian-Corsican Revolution was not active during these four years. I also don't see evidence that they knew they were doing anything wrong. Either way, that has nothing to do with G5, which states: To qualify, the edit or page must have been made while the user was actually banned or blocked. A page created before the ban or block was imposed or after it was lifted will not qualify under this criterion. Please revert your deletions. -- Tavix (talk) 12:48, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Restoration of Page on Kamla Nath Sharma

Hi UtherSRG, thanks to you profusely for undeleting the draft on ‘Kamla Nath Sharma’, a senior engineer and writer from India. This page was first included as far back as about 10 years, and has undergone many many changes since. Now, from its full contents some years back, the present draft has been substantially edited to conform to the accepted guidelines under Wikipedia articles. Hope, it meets your acceptance also. I have also procured a recent picture of Prof. Sharma. It is requested that the article may please be restored. Thanks again. Aaditya BahugunaAaditya.Bahuguna (talk) 14:55, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

I am deeply hurt by utherSRG insulting my editing and writing.

UtherSRG I think you insulted all my editing and writing. You don't want me to make new edits and posts on Wikipedia. So you are trying to delete all my edits and posts by adding delete tag. I know that all these edits and deletes will happen. Only because of you I am forced to leave this beautiful world of Wikipedia. I don't want to play a role where my independent writing and editing is not respected. I think you are not a good person. You can write and edit your own Wikipedia. You don't need to respect and help me. I have written the writings from my pain and sorrow. Srabanta Deb (talk) 15:10, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

I'm sorry you feel this way. Wikipedia is a community effort and has policies that were approved by the community. Your contributions must conform with these policies, or they must go. This is not personal. If you can improve the articles so that they conform to our policies, then I would expect that they will survive the deletion discussions. If they do not survive, it is because they should not have been created in the first place. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:13, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
@Srabanta Deb: And I echo Liz's sentiment: [D]eleting an article is not an "insult". If the reliable sources aren't there, they aren't there. It might be too soon. If you find some stronger references, maybe there could be an article in the future. I'm sure that the articles have been evaluated according to Wikipedia policies and guidlines and not based on editors' opinion of [the subject]. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Red squirrel

Hi, @UtherSRG. Could you let me know why you reverted my revisions to the red squirrel page, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Red_squirrel&diff=next&oldid=1175787282? I thought they were entirely constructive and non-controversial; clearly you disagree, but I can't figure out why.

- It is anathema in biology to say that a trait is "for" a particular purpose. This is teleological reasoning (as noted in my edit summary). Thus, "offers camouflage" (which is a neutral, factual description of an advantage conferred by the trait) is superior to "is for camouflage" (which presupposed that the trait evolved with a particular end in 'mind'). See Teleology in biology for a fuller discussion.

- eastern grey squirrel should be wikilinked at the 1st instance, not the 2nd

- similarly, it should be clarified as "American" at the 1st instance, not the 2nd

- a comma is required before "which", as it introduces a non-restrictive modifier phrase

Thank you kindly.

Hi, User:UtherSRG - Thanks for the additions to and reformatting of the AFJ Wiki article. Fair, though not entirely true. Because abandoned drafts are deleted after six months, moving articles to draft space should generally be done only for newly created articles (typically as part of new page review) or as the result of a deletion discussion. Older articles—as a rule of thumb those older than 90 days—should not be draftified without prior consensus at AfD.[disputed – discuss] Emphasis mine. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:23, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean by "make the better argument" here, given my words had been quoted from the page itself in the very next sentence. Can you elaborate? 2603:8001:4542:28FB:6CA0:4C83:6BDA:AF03 (talk) 16:55, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

It's validly not a valid argument to make as one should make the better argument as you point out. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:32, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
I think you and I might actually be agreeing, but are simply misunderstanding each other's words. Effectively, my line of thinking was:
  • Significant coverage "address[ing] the subject in detail" is required for articles. (Per GNG, etc.)
  • Under almost all ordinary circumstances, a single sentence won't provide enough detail about a subject to count as discussing it "in detail".
    • Therefore, a single sentence about a subject counts as trivial coverage.
    • Therefore, "HennyYoungman"'s argument that "One sentence is trivial coverage" is correct, or at the very least isn't intrinsically fallacious or against policy.
    • Therefore, it shouldn't be listed as an argument to avoid, because it isn't an argument that need be avoided.
If I'm understanding you right, I think you're saying instead of simply repeating that "one sentence is trivial coverage" an AFD user should elaborate why one sentence amounts to trivial coverage (because of SIGCOV, etc., etc.), which I agree would be more helpful--but saying that "one sentence is trivial coverage" alone isn't wrong, and is completely in line with policy, so there's no reason to list it as an argument to be avoided. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:C4B:E800:696D:62C9 (talk) 06:16, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
It's not valid to simply make the argument One sentence is trivial coverage. One must expound upon this at the very least. There may be SIGCOV in the citations but none of the information was put into the article (in which case a delete !vote would not be justified) or there is not SIGCOV of the subject and that's what should be said (in which case a delete !vote would be justified). - UtherSRG (talk) 11:01, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

AFDs

Hello, UtherSRG,

Your decision to immediately renominate for a second AFD articles which were Soft Deleted and then restored is coming in for some criticism, at least from one very active editor. I agree that if participation was low in the first AFD, it is unlikely to be higher in another AFD coming quickly after the first one was closed. Additionally, since the first AFDs closed as Soft Delete, there has to be substantial support for Deletion (rather than just one editor advocating Delete) since articles can't be Soft Deleted twice. Right now, it looks like the three AFDs I've seen like this will be closing as No Consensus which might not be the best use of editors' time and will also be very stressful for the article creator.

Please rethink this strategy. It's not that I think these articles should be Kept, I just don't think that this approach will result in your desired result which seems to be their deletion. Our most precious resource is our editors' time on the project so it is wise to not overwhelm AFD with nominations that have a low success rate of achieving your goal. I think if you renominate these articles in a few months' time, the closure result might be very different. In fact, quickly renominating an article after a recent AFD closure can result in the subsequent AFD being closed as Keep on procedural grounds although I won't take this action. Just a few thoughts to consider. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 03:41, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

That's fair. What's a good rule of thumb for time between AFDs? - UtherSRG (talk) 11:02, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
If you are talking about David Shenkar and Benisha Poudel, my intention is not actually to get a firm deletion. These were soft deletions that were immediately restored via RFU. I strongly prefer to see such restorations go to draftspace instead of immediately back to main article space. This gives the editor time to address the AFD's concerns with a reasonable cushion. And added benefit is that hopefully it will then go through AFC and get additional eyes on it. When they do get immediately restored to main article space, I instead re-AFD them to bring those eyes to the article. If that means a keep instead of a delete, that's great! If it means a firm delete, that's great! If it gets just one more pair of eyes on it and it still ends up as no consensus, well, it's not great, but at least it's possibly on someone else's radar. And indeed, one of those article I mentioned has gotten some keep votes, so I expect it will be a firm keep. I consider that a success. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:12, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Reviews are not so simple

Re:Tenley M. Conway moved to draftspace
I don't intend to be rude, but at the same time I think it is appropriate to make a few comments based upon my experience as a journal editor, publication/proposal reviewer and arbitrator, and also being on the other end.

Both in Wikipedia and outside many people hide behind anonymity (you don't). It is way too common in journals to see 1-3 sentence reviews "this is bad". All editors either reject these or get an independent 3rd (or more) opinion.
When challenged, often for good reason, a reviewer has the responsibility to backup their statements, as appropriate with sources. (Yes, it is common for reviews to quote sources, as you may know.) If they did not, as a journal editor or adjudicator I have always ignored them.

N.B. Additional comments are sometimes useful for novices such as the original author of this article. While his 2022 bio of Johnson should probably get deleted (how did it get through?), not this one. Beyond DEI, discipline-adjusted (necessary) she looks like a rising star. If I find time I may tweak it for him. Ldm1954 (talk) 16:16, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Your edits in my talk page

Hello Mr. Greenstein I see that you have deleted the edits of a user in my page without notifying me? Why have you done that?

I think it would have been proper and polite for you to write to me a message? What is going on there? Are you an admin btw? I suspect some user's editing so extremely boldly which feels like they are conveniently in cahoots with each others and edit as if they are going to be covered/saved by admins. After all Wikipedia is not a democracy. Anyone who gets power can abuse it to their advantage/will. Or do we have any measures to prevent that even for admins? Is that all I need to be in the cahoots caboose club? - UtherSRG (talk) 12:41, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, UtherSRG,

I'm not sure what's up with rfud-helper but it didn't make an edit to this page you restored so it showed up on User:SDZeroBot/G13 eligible. Just thought I'd let you know. Liz Read! Talk! 01:47, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks... - UtherSRG (talk) 11:13, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello UtherSRG:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Zakir Hossain Raju

Hi UtherSRG, I fixed a bunch of incoming links to

Zakir Hossain Raju redirect there are still loads of incoming links. But when I look at (some of) the articles in question I can't find the links. Am I missing something? Polyamorph (talk

Moot now that Zakir Hossain Raju (professor) has been deleted. Polyamorph (talk) 07:14, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Likely the issue was the navboxes. This is normal and clears up in a few hours as the database settles. - UtherSRG (talk) 12:13, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

My Spirit Sings
title

Hi, thank you for working on the Mináǧi kiŋ dowáŋ page. I think the page title should be reverted to the name that's in all of the sources, not the English translation, which is only provided as a footnote in the sources. Per

WP:PRECISE reasoning for removing the phrasing after the colon, so a more appropriate name for the article may be just Mináǧi kiŋ dowáŋ. Pingnova (talk

That's fair. Done. - UtherSRG (talk) 12:56, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks! Pingnova (talk) 20:02, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
