The Stig - temperament addition

You removed this section form the article about The Stig and I have re-instated it, please in future give more comprehensive reasons of why you would like to remove it before deleting it it, or first discuss it in the discussion section it is only polite. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.244.223.82 (talk) 17:11, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wits Solar Car

I agree with the previous statement about the Stig, I spent over an hour this morning on the wits solar car page just for you to delete everything. It demotivates me to do any Wikipedia editing if I know everything will just be deleted without any discussion as to why its being deleted. I know I may be wrong but without discussion I won't learn so then what is the point wasting my time? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bradley Rautenbach (talkcontribs) 21:29, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

December 4th FIFA headline

I have just seen that you have re-added the FIFA headline you posted earlier. I removed it Again for several reasons:

1. Your headline Does Not have a Link. Unless you can add a proper news link, DO NOT re-add it.

2. Some of the text is in bold. The Bold Is Unnecessary and DOES NOT need to be added.

3. December 4th has not occurred yet.

Please take these reasons into consideration before re-adding your headline. Thank you. --

As a courtesy, I have reinstated your FIFA headline with a proper link, and no bold text. Your welcome. --

Wrong desk?

Hi,

I think you may have posted this response to the wrong question as it doesn't concern the sun going supernova in any way. This sometimes happens with the question one below or one above in which case I may just move it myself, but this time I'm not sure where precisely the question belongs, it looks like it may even be the wrong desk. Cheers Nil Einne (talk) 14:08, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ignore me didn't read the whole question Nil Einne (talk) 22:32, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hehehe...I wondered if the humour was going to be too subtle. I did try using small text to try and make it obvious ;) Zunaid 10:47, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

South African Language ID

Hi Zunaid. I noticed your helpful response on the Entertainment Refdesk about the meaning of "ke nako" and was wondering if you could answer a question I posted on the Language RefDesk, which basically got the response: "Ask somebody from South Africa." In my broadcaster's coverage of the World Cup (ESPN USA), an announcer with a South-African-English accent welcomes the viewers back after a commercial with a short utterance from some (presumably spoken in South Africa) language. Here's a YouTube clip. You'll find examples at about 0:40, 1:10, and 1:20 in. Can you identify the language(s) and what any of these examples mean? Thank you!--el Aprel (facta-facienda) 21:57, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Answered at the Language Desk as best I could, will try to follow up and get the other answers as well. Zunaid 00:47, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I posted the other two after consulting someone at work. Answers are here. You're welcome! Zunaid 14:02, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great answers, Zunaid. Thanks again for the help!--el Aprel (facta-facienda) 21:09, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image registration for World Cup burst-mode images

Hello Zunaid,

I have offered to perform additional processing on your source image, even though you marked the thread "resolved". Do you have original high-resolution images? Otherwise I will do my best with the frames from the current GIF. Nimur (talk) 20:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply
]

I've got about 13 8MP JPEG's. I was wondering whether it's better to align every image so that the background is as static as possible or whether to actually crop each frame appropriately so as to create a "pan and zoom" effect following the flight of the ball. I can send you the original images if you want, on condition that you don't use them but for creating the GIF to upload to WP, and that you delete them afterwards. Sorry to be so pedantic but I did go to a lot of effort to take those pictures and wouldn't want them to get out. I'll take your word for it on this :) What's the best way of getting them to you? I'd prefer emailing it from work which would be easier. Zunaid 22:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can promise not to use these images for any purpose other than the specified purpose of creating one high-quality auto-registered animation for Wikipedia. I've been working on some numerical image registration code as a hobby-project, and this looks like a perfect test-data-set. If you like, I can give you access to anonymous secure FTP on nimur.com - I can set this up for you later this evening and pass some details your way. The most raw unprocessed images are best - any manual pre-processing does not actually interfere with the algorithmic alignment (though it may decrease quality), but I'm trying to parameterize my system for optimal alignment search-space based on real-world examples. Regarding timelines - this is a "side project" and my code breaks very often, so I hope to have some progress within the next day or so. Nimur (talk) 23:55, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay sure, just let me know the details. Zunaid 08:10, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I have created an account. You can
SSH or SCP as [email protected] . Your user name is zunaid and your password is, all one word and with no spaces, w i k i d v s . If there's technical trouble, let me know. I will delete that account after the images are uploaded. Sorry for the delay. Nimur (talk) 15:28, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply
]
Dam. Two problems: 1. I thought to ftp things you just type in a ftp:// address as usual straight into Firefox and it would prompt you for a username and password if required. 2. Our ADSL at home is down so I'm on the 3G card again. There was a repeater fault on the SEACOM cable somewhere between Mombasa and Mumbai which affects our connection to Europe and India and the rest of the world. It will thus be intermittent. Basically we're screwed for the next few days until they fix it for sure. I can try to send the pics from work tomorrow if I have time, but you'll need to tell me how to access the ftp server. I presume I'll to download WinSCP or similar? Zunaid 17:38, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding (1), this is an SFTP, not a FTP server (because FTP is unsecured); so you will need either an sftp or scp client (WinSCP is a good one). I know security doesn't matter for this usage, but I don't have an FTP system set up anywhere. (2) There's no rush, I'm tuning my algorithm on the GIF version you uploaded already and hopefully will have a ready-to-run version for the high-resolution inputs; if it turns out this is not worth the effort, just let me know. I'm eager to try out my image/video stabilization codes on new real-world data sets (and I don't have a burst-mode camera, so I have to borrow my images!). Nimur (talk) 19:36, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just realized the article links are to disambiguation pages - here's the
SSH file transfer protocol, and a list of dozens of possible software. WinSCP is a great one. FileZilla also should work. You can also use SSHFS. Nimur (talk) 19:42, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply

It is done (or should be in a few more minutes). For interest's sake how does your code work? I would guess you compute the correlation between images and adjust angle, zoom and position to maximise it? Or is it more complicated than that? A quick-and-dirty solution could possibly be coded up quickly in MATLAB, although something more sophisticated would obviously take much longer. Sounds like an interesting signal processing problem; takes me back to my undergrad and post-grad thesis days. Let me know when it's done, I'd like to see the result. Zunaid 09:40, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but I am computing the
optimal fit, which means I have a model to represent the shift between two images, and when I compute the correlation, I also seek parameterized updates to the shift; and iterate until I find the best possible alignemnt. What's particularly unique about my method (in development) is the way I discount "outliers" in the scene - in other words, we expect the individual players and crowd to move around, and we want to ignore the contributions of those errors to the alignment algorithm. I'll keep you posted, and if I ever write this up, I'll send you a copy of my algorithm paper. Thanks for the data! Nimur (talk) 01:20, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply

Hi Zunaid

Hi Zunaid. Why did you reput the question? Please see this link - [1]. THe person who asked the question removed it later on. I didn't remove it. I wasn't the first to remove it. Someone else did. Like I said, please see the link. Thanks dude. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.72.226.152 (talk) 06:58, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh ok, I wasn't exactly sure what was going on, there were a bunch of reverts and re-reverts. I just restored to a version which had the question in; it seemed a perfectly valid question to me which people would be able to respond to. I don't really have an interest in it myself. No harm done in leaving it there, if the OP wants to remove it again let him do so. Zunaid 07:06, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Boom

Wow, superb footage, and a great vantage point. Well done. Zaian (talk) 19:42, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I was lucky to be standing ready when it happened, most people got caught keeping their cameras out of the rain when the explosion went off early. Zunaid 19:53, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notability and Lists

Urgently needed at Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Inclusion criteria for Lists: a reliable third party defintion for a list or listacle. Can you help? --Gavin Collins (talk|contribs) 09:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what's needed to be honest, and I'm not sure I could write a definition out of thin air. I'd be happy to comment or refine an existing one if you or someone else takes a stab at it. Zunaid 16:21, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice Work

Nice work on the picture of the Athlone Power Station cooling towers being demolished. It looks great!--Discott (talk) 13:00, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! We were very lucky to stand right on the edge of the exclusion zone. Got to a good height as well standing on the roof of a building. Now if only I can stop people forwarding a Powerpoint slideshow of my photos around the world!
