Development

In May 2022, it was reported that director T. J. Gnanavel was to join hands with Suriya for his next directorial. They previously collaborated for the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim (2021).[4][5] Reportedly, the latter talked with the director and stated that if his film with Vetrimaaran, Vaadivaasal, got further delayed due to extensive pre-production works, they would collaborate again.[6] Production was to begin after Suriya completed his commitments with Bala's Vanangaan at that time, but that film was dropped due to creative differences between the director and actor.[7] The director himself, on 2 November, coinciding with the occasion of 1 year since the release of Jai Bhim, Gnanavel confirmed the reunion during an interview for the occasion.[8] The director further stated that he narrated the script to the actor during the principal photography for Jai Bhim (April 2021–September 2021), and the actor okayed it back then.[9][10]

On the other hand, in July, the director of Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Don (2022), Cibi Chakravarthy, was reported to begin work for his next directorial, which would either star Vijay or Rajinikanth in the lead role. Sources speculated that it was more likely for the latter to star in the role, as he wished the director for his success in his debut film Don.[11] In August that year, Chakravarthy confirmed that he indeed had begun work for his next directorial. However, he stated that he had not yet decided who to star in the lead role.[12] Throughout the year, speculations over the collaboration of the director and Rajinikanth and the film was temporarily titled as Thalaivar 170 by reporters.[13] As the actor signed a two-movie deal with Lyca Productions, because of the success of 2.0 (2018), which is currently the 3rd highest-grossing Tamil film, the venture was reported to be produced by the production house.[14] In January 2023, the director had reportedly confirmed the collaboration of him and Rajinikanth.[15] However, the project failed to materialise and was dropped.[16]

Pre-production

In January 2023, sources claimed that due to Suriya's commitments to both Siva's Kanguva and Vetrimaran's Vaadivaasal, Gnanavel began working on another script. He reportedly had narrated it to Rajinikanth, who was impressed by the director.[16][17] Lyca Productions officially announced the project on 2 March, under the tentative title Thalaivar 170.[18] The shooting was revealed by the production house to commence after the actor completes filming for the films Jailer (2023) and Lal Salaam (2024).[19] A muhurat puja was held on 4 October in Thiruvananthapuram in the presence of the cast and crew.[20]

The film was made on a budget of 160 crore (US$20 million), which is one of the lowest for Rajinikanth in recent times.[1] Anirudh Ravichander would score the music, in maiden collaboration with the director.[21] On 4 October 2023, the technical crew including cinematographer S. R. Kathir, editor Philomin Raj and stunt choreography duo Anbariv were announced to have been retained by Gnanavel, after they previously worked in Jai Bhim.[22][23] Art director K. Kathir, make-up artist Pattanam Rasheed and costume designer Anu Vardhan were chosen as crew.[20][24] The official title Vettaiyan was announced on 12 December 2023, coinciding with Rajinikanth's 73rd birthday.[25][26]

Casting

Rajinikanth would reportedly play the role as a Muslim police officer,[27][28][29] Amitabh Bachchan was cast in a cameo appearance,[30] his debut Tamil film as well as in his reunion with Rajinikanth after Hum (1991).[31][32] Bachchan was initially set to make his Tamil debut with Uyarndha Manidhan; however due to issues between him and the producer, the film got shelved.[33][34] Fahadh Faasil was cast to play the main antagonist,[35] in his fifth Tamil film after Velaikkaran (2017), Super Deluxe (2019), Vikram (2022) and Maamannan (2023).[36][37]

Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh and Dushara Vijayan, was selected as the three female leads, all collaborating with Rajinikanth for the first time,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44] and Rana Daggubati was said to be playing a prominent role in the film.[45] The actresses were announced on 2 October 2023, while Daggubati was announced the day after, by the production house.[46][35] Rakshan and G. M. Sundar's presence at the muhurat puja confirmed their inclusion.[47] Rohini, Rao Ramesh, and Ramesh Thilak were later announced by the production house to be a part of the cast.[48][49]

Filming

Prasad Labs, Chennai.[54] During this schedule, as Indian 2 was filming in the same studio, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan met at the studio and posted videos and pictures to social media, which went viral.[55] On 5 December, Singh, through her social media, stated that she would take a break from filming as she injured herself during the filming of her portions.[56][57]

A leaked picture of Rajinikanth and Faasil, taken by paparazzi, was posted to X (formerly Twitter),[58] where the film's social media security partner removed the picture from the social media and warned the users not to post or else they would lose their account.[59][60] After a short break for Pongal, filming continued shortly after in Puducherry.[61] That schedule concluded by mid-January 2024. The final schedule began on 28 January in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.[62] Rajinikanth, on 10 February, stated that 80–percent of filming was done.[63] In early March, production moved to Hyderabad, and Daggubati began filming his portions on 4 March.[64][65]
