Waveney Valley (UK Parliament constituency)
Waveney Valley is a proposed
constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament.[1] Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, it will first be contested at the next general election
.
Boundaries
The constituency will straddle the River Waveney between Norfolk and Suffolk and will be composed of the following (as they existed on 1 December 2020):
- The District of East Suffolk wards of: Bungay & Wainford; Halesworth & Blything.
- The District of Mid Suffolk wards of: Bacton; Eye; Fressingfield; Gislingham; Haughley, Stowupland & Wetherden; Hoxne & Worlingworth; Mendlesham; Palgrave; Rickinghall; Stradbroke & Laxfield; Walsham-le-Willows.
- The District of South Norfolk wards of: Beck Vale, Dickleburgh & Scole; Bressingham & Burston; Bunwell; Diss & Roydon; Ditchingham & Earsham; Harleston.[2]
It will cover the following areas:
- Areas to the north of the river, including Diss and Harleston, transferred from South Norfolk
- Bungay, transferred from Waveney (to be renamed Lowestoft)
- Halesworth, transferred from Suffolk Coastal
- Rural areas of north Suffolk, including Eye, transferred from Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, and Bury St Edmunds (to be renamed Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket)
Constituency profile
Electoral Calculus characterises the proposed seat as "Strong Right", with right-wing economic and social views, high home ownership levels and strong support for Brexit.[3] Despite this, it is a target seat for the Green Party[4] who won half of the council wards in the seat in the 2023 local elections.
