Absurdly implausible search term; subject was a wholly undistinguished youth hockey player (who fails

WP:NHOCKEY and the GNG going away), who achieved no distinction in the season in question. One of a very long list of implausible redirects by the creator. Ravenswing 20:19, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply

I cannot see the utility of this redirect; "microphagy", as far as I can tell, refers to the practice of eating microscopic life-forms, which is something done by many organisms and not merely white blood cells. An article on microphagy could easily be written, but, until it is, we do not need this odd redirect. J Milburn (talk) 19:56, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • delete The closest redirect possibility would be to
    suspension feeding, but that article doesn't address the difference between filter feeders which consume microscopic food, and those which eat larger creatures. It's not about microbes doing the feeding. Mangoe (talk) 16:28, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply

The phrase "No Retreat" can have meanings other than by association with the phrase "No Surrender"; for example, a military force that is boxed in can literally have no place to which they can retreat (i.e., no retreat), but can still surrender.

Internet service is not Internet service provider, rather should be Web service. Rezonansowy (talkcontribs) 13:33, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Internet service provider. The World Wide Web and the Internet are not the same thing. I don't like the lede in that article saying they are also called "telephone companies", since many get Internet service without a telephone service, but that is another matter. Si Trew (talk) 14:13, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment an internet service is not a "web service" The internet is not as small as the web. This should probably be disambiguated, since internet directory services (DNS) are not ISPs, etc. -- 70.50.148.122 (talk) 07:34, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget per nom. No, the Web and the Internet aren't complete synonyms, but they're used interchangeably enough that this is a likely search term for Web service. "Internet service" is no more a synonym for "Internet service provider," and the former seems a very unlikely search term for the latter. --BDD (talk) 17:33, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Strong delete, with prejudice: nothing except navigational links should redirect to the main page, which changes daily, so there can be no possible notability; I forget the Wikipedia policy/guideline but it does not allow for navel gazing i.e. Wikipedia quoting itself, in article space. This appears to be due to kw:Pennfolenn/Penfolen. That wiki now has their main page at kw:Folen dre, and it does not appear that any wiki now uses that title for their main page. We should probably move this redirect to Folen dre, without creating a redirect.

For precedence on having these redirects, see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2012 October 19 and Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2012 October 20. IMO the rationale for that needs to be reviewed, but my RfDs on this page are in line with that precedence as these are titles that are no longer used as a foreign language main page, or never were used for that purpose as best we can tell. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:25, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to take
precedent", and his Lady Chancellor's opinion that precedent should not be before common sense. (Uncommon Law''
), 1936, republished continuousy since.) I have read those discussions but I don't think they add to or subtract from my opinion:
It is quite obvious to me that nothing should link to the Main Page except purely navigational links on the sidebar of the main page itself.
The Main Page changes frequently (for example the DYK section changes about four times a day), so by definition no notability can be established simply by something referring to the main page. Pace Thryduulf in the first discussion, incoming links or hits are irrelevant; there were not many, and if there were, the discussion should be on renaming the main page to that redirect's name. The main page is accessible externally fairly simply at en.wikipedia.org and most search engines seem to have heard about it.
It is simply obtuse to allow any redirect to the main page. In editors' discussions it may be that a particular version of the main page be discussed, but even that is hard to do since it transcludes DYK, ITN, and so on, and it is a moving target.
There is no good in redirecting to the main page; any references to the main page should be to the main page and not go round the houses to ay so. Diversions are OK with editors on discussion (I hope) but have no business in main article space.
If you really want a precedent, The Times' front page used to be all advertising until well into the 1900s I think. There is an argument for having advertising on Wikipedia, but adverting (in the old sense of the word) in this manner is quite unacceptable under WP policy as it stands. Si Trew (talk) 14:46, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
here is a long list of ~350 redirects to the Main Page, including many foreign language titles, but also many userspace pages that could be replaced with {{
usertalk page}}. John Vandenberg (chat) 15:18, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply
]
John, thanks for your hard work there. I think it is inevitable that users will link to the main page on their talk pages and so on. I was simply stating that no article in article space should link to the main page without good reason. Obviously some MOS and WP titles also link to the main page. I had a DYK on main page a couple of weeks ago and I didn't even know about it becaue I don't tend to look at the main page, but I imagine for a lot of readers it is their first port of call and we should strongly discourage random links to it when it is perfectly easy to type "Wikipedia" into your favourite browser and lo and behold you get the main page. For if not, rename the main page to Pennfolen or Penfolen. Si Trew (talk) 00:17, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have processed all the redirects from user space. It is worth noting that other large wikis appear to allow these redirects to their main page from other languages.[1][2][3] German however does not, as it only has a link from the English name 'Main Page'[4] and has deleted de:Wikipédia:Accueil_principal and even de:Main page.
