This user keep adding their own (Turkish) forum to the 'popular fan sites' section of the page. I've removed it several times so far, but I haven't used reverts for that (mainly because his adding them involved more than one edit), so I'm not sure if this is in violation of the 3RR rule, but it starts to get annoying. Zyppora (talk) 14:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

From what I can see, there's no comments about it on the article's talk page, and no posts on the user's talk page. As a first step, I would suggest starting a discussion on the article's talk page about it. If the user continues, post on their talk page to get involved with the discussion.
As a general rule, any fansite that is nothing more than a discussion forum should probably not be listed per
WP:NOT#REPOSITORY. Better still, if the game developer maintains a list of "recognized" or "official" fansites, just link to that list rather than debating which fansites to include here. --- Barek (talkcontribs

The game is also known for its enourmous community surrounding illegal private servers (usually run on emulated or stolen server software). There are literally hundreds or thousands of these servers. The official servers are listed on ragnarokonline.com

The references and added content aren't necessarily bad, per se, but the way the links are described is POV. The edits to the site of Hartfield haven't really been vanity, but I think the fact that the editing is centered around a certain site should be noted. --68.161.153.211 (talk

freerepublic.com

This isn't exactly aspam report as I don't believe there is a concerted effort to get links to this site onto Wikipedia, but rather a number of good faith editors adding sources and using this site out of convenience, rather it's a plea for assistance in cleaning the mess up.

Free Republic is a non-Reliable Source, because it is a self-published websource that frequently includes fringe views and various blogs and forums. However, it also includes an "article archiving" section in which copyrighted news articles are generally copied wholesale onto the source and then members of the site comment upon the article. Linking to this site is a violation of

lawsuit with the LA Times and Washington Post over their reprinting. --Bobblehead (rants)

Possible rename

There is an increasing issue with sites that are justly blacklisted due to abuse, but which complain to

OTRS that when searching for their site the link abuse pages we generate score very highly. We have already discussed several times the possibility of renaming the MediaWiki spam blacklist pages to link blacklist, and that may or may not be done, but we could lessen the complaints and be seen to do the Right Thing by renaming this project to something like "WikiProject external links" or "WikiProject link management". I submit this for your consideration. Guy (Help!
) 15:50, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

If they abuse wikipedia they deserve to have our pages show up in the results. Spam is spam there is no need to create some weird new term that means the same thing. Call a spade a spade.
βcommand 2
16:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I do feel for OTRS, as I'm sure the majority of the spam complaints recieved are just another avenue for these spammers to attempt to exploit Wikipedia. Ive asked this Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2008_Archive_Mar_2#When_does_a_Wikiproject.2C_become_a_noticeboard previously, without response. WikiProject Spam should remain, however "MediaWiki spam blacklist" might be better suited without the term "spam", as it has potential for other non-spam applications. Ironicly the spammers did use wikipedia in order to score "high" in google, let them enjoy the spoils of their efforts. ;)--Hu12 (talk) 16:39, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Plus, in a lot of cases, it isn't actually provably them, just J. Random Editor. And sites may be blacklisted as massively inappropriate, rather than simple spam. Guy (Help!) 18:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
  • I am still saying, if the edits were in good faith, and they stopped directly when warned, then go forward and delete the reports, drop me (or another operator of COIBot, here is also a good venue) a line to remove the rule(s) from the bot, and get on. If the edits were persistent, and warnings and discussions have not helped, then the reports are an on-wiki proof of why the link was blacklisted/added to a revertlist, or is in other way of concern. The wikipedia system gives handful of warnings when they edit (even I as an admin see "Content that violates any copyright will be deleted. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. You agree to license your contributions under the GFDL.", "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed for profit by others, do not submit it.", "See our policies and guidelines for more information on editing." around this edit window; when creating a new article I see "Before creating an article, please read Wikipedia:Your first article, or search for an existing article to which you can redirect this title." (with a link to
Wikipedia:Your first article, saying "Please don't create pages about yourself or your friends, pages that advertise, or personal essays.", and there is a section on advertising; when adding links you run into captchas, etc. etc. I know, we don't have to punish people for their actions, but also don't have to help in obfuscating their negative tracks, we are not an advertising service. Getting the reports out of the top ten can also be done by making sure your company is known in a positive way. --Dirk Beetstra T C
    17:10, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

My 2 pence:
  1. Our goal is to maintain the encyclopedia's integrity, not maintain a linkspam-identification project for the rest of the world.
  2. If we can reduce the load on OTRS volunteers while still meeting our goal, I'm all for it.
  3. Not every domain reported here is found to be spam
  4. Yes, some side of me enjoys watching spammers squirm, but I have to remind myself this is all about an encyclopaedia, not indulging my childish feelings of schadenfreude (and they can be very strong some days!). It's probably in our encyclopaedia's best interests to do our job in a quiet, low-profile, efficient way with as little drama as possible.
  5. I especially would like to see us rename some of the bot-generated subpages of this project such as:
By their very nature, these valuable reports generate a lot of false positives which then create consternation for innocent editors and domain-owners that appear on these pages.
--A. B. (talkcontribs) 18:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, false positives and marginal cases, and links added by some other person, and the occasional joe job.
WP:AGF and all that: we should deal with the problem (excessive link abuse) while remaining neutral on the motives. Guy (Help!
) 18:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I support changing the project names. While we shouldn't be concerned too much with how the names are used off-wiki, I do agree that if the naming is causing unnecesary extra work for another group of Wikipedia volunteers, then I have no objection to changing it. It would still accomplishes the project's goals while reducing issues for other Wikipedia groups.
This goes for both the project, and the bot report page names. As A.B. pointed out, the term spam isn't 100% accurate description of what's reported, so a less controversial name would be appropriate. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 15:56, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

LinkReports

Apparently there is a lot of controversy due to the place for the linkreports. I have therefore rewritten the bot so that it now reports in its own userspace. See

User:COIBot/UserReports and User:COIBot/PageReports
. Those patrollers who are not on IRC may want to watchlist the new pages.

To make the job complete all subpages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/LinkReports/Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/PageReports/Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/UserReports should be moved to COIBot's userspace, the redirects deleted and all links everywhere to be repaired (as they are sometimes the blacklist-proof). I am quite busy now, feel free to perform that on individual tasks where necessery/when complaints arise. I will see if a bot can perform these actions.

The LinkSummary/User summary/light templates have been adapted, they need a second adaptation when the reports have been moved.

Hope this helps. --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:53, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, this actually does not help. I have therefor reverted my edits to the bot and reinstated the old reporting place. Can we add the pages to the robots.txt, I guess that is the best solution. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:02, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Dirk, first up, thanks for the bot :-) Moving the pages would seem to me to be helpful, in that the titles do not include the word "spam", whether they are Googled or not. Guy (Help!) 11:13, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I have no real doubts that this link placement has been done with the intention of promoting websites given the cross wiki nature of the links. Equally on that basis I believe it should be listed at Meta for consideration for global blocking. Obviously I would not take the decision myself having been involved with this case, thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:07, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

User:hollywoodnorthreport

User Hollywoodnorthreport appears to be spamming his website (hollywoodnorthreport.com), band (left spine down), himself (mark sommer), and promotion company (synthetic entertainment). He claims to be just a fan that checks hollywoodnorthreport.com, but he is listed as staff by the name mark sommer, and the forums do not appear to have the activity he claims. By looking at the contribs, he has added his band and company to every page related to music. His band page also claims that his company is "the leading promotions company". He appears to have been nominated for deletion previously, but escaped.

Note the discussion previously:

DarkSaber2k 08:50, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

hello I got this warning. This was not a spam link. When this page was recreated or combined or changed a while go......the external link for HollywoodNorthReport.com was taken out. Which is odd as the website offers daily news on the CANADIAN FILM AND TV industry. I am a heavy user of the site and use the MESSAGE BOARDS of the site hourly for updates on filming, etc.

Thoughts?

OK, ignore the warning, I was doing a couple of thing at once, just saw your name and that you had added the link to that article and jumped to the wrong conclusion. No harm meant! DarkSaber2k 09:31, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

OK thanks I re-edited that page!

Cheers!--Hollywoodnorthreport 08:09, 4 July 2007 (UTC)"

He is not a "heavy user" as claimed, and his name is listed on the staff page. The whois entry for the domain also shows it as registered to a "mark mark" of "synthetic entertainment".

Two google searches suggest this may be a
WP:COI issue (circumstantial, but suggests a link). The "recall election" dif (above) references the name name redacted. By first googling "cryellow" turns up a personal homepage: http://members.cox.net/cryellow/ which shows at the bottom three company links under "My Favorite Places". A second google search for "name redacted
" turns up all thee companies listing that person as founder or CEO of all three companies.
URLs
two links redacted
-rather than strike out, I redacted the mention of the two links which have not been spammed on this site, and which have not been shown to be related to this issue. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:41, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
It's not solid proof, and I will not pursue it further myself - but it is suggestive of a COI issue related to self-promotion and attempting to use Wikipedia for marketing/advertising purposes. --12.193.27.158 (talk) 18:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
One last comment: while the user insists on his talk page that he's not associated with the company, he has twice edited out the last name from where the OP asked him if he's "name redacted". Odd behavior to be trying to hide the last name if it's not really you - especially when Cryellow posted the full name in an article himself earlier. --12.193.27.158 (talk) 18:47, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

It really makes no difference if the editor persistently adding these links is name redacted,
Wikipedia is not a soapbox for promoting products and if this spamming continues, these domains will be blacklisted, regardless of the person's identity off-Wikipedia. Any accompanying acrimony on the spammer's part will just accelerate that outcome.
--A. B. (talkcontribs

Comment: Looking at the edits by those involved, I see no posts of the names redacted links. The association to this thread appears to be solely on their inclusion on a homepage of someone off Wikipedia who has the name "Cryellow", who we have no verification is the person with that username on the wiki. If/when action needs to be taken, I recommend leaving out those two links for now. In fact, I'm tempted to just remove them from this report entirely as they haven't been used on the wiki from what I can see. Opinions? --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 14:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Did you actually check the content this (last) time before deleting it? The final revision that was there before it got (to use your term) 'salted' established the notability of the entry (secondary source recognition in medical journals), provided references to the studies underlying the information on the page, was written in NPOV and took out basically every bit of content that'd make it into 'advertising'. What wasn't stated on the page in terms of notability is that the company is larger in the industry they trade in than Under Armor outside the United States, so comparing the two pages and the referenced studies on the Skins page, it's hard to not to interpret the aversion to allowing the page as a bias against a smaller, non-US entity. I'd argue that the contribution of the page through the referenced material, if allowed, far outweighs the burden created by the single, external link in the Company section of the page. I respectfully challenge the characterisation of the content as a spam article and would ask that the final revision of it be reinstated. Gbskins (talk) 09:16, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Questions (by JNW (talk) 12:56, 14 April 2008 (UTC)):
  • Is this [32] a sock account?

If you're implying that it's deceptive, then no. But having a banned IP and an indefinitely blocked account does tend to dampen ones ability to actually edit an article into shape such that it complies with the relevant policies. Quoting from

Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Template/Cheatsheet
in relation to blocks: "It normally does not last long, and an indef-blocked user can return productively under another account if they choose.". I so chose to return productively under another account.

  • Is it appropriate to have an article which has been deleted up on a talk page?

Is a user sub-page not an appropriate place to sandbox a more appropriate version of a page? Quoting Wikipedia:Sandbox: "For a sandbox of your own, create a user subpage." Given the fact that the original location was 'salted', there weren't too many options other than this for editing a more appropriate version.

  • Does the article now satisfy encyclopedic standards?

I believe the version on my user sandbox page does, yes. It's certainly no less so than other pages of similar garment manufacturing companies (eg

) and provides external links to published papers containing material that is relevant to the subject at hand (compression garments and the claims of their benefit).

  • Er.... no. Gbskins blocked for block evasion and spamming, and I left a note on the talk page of user:Ausdiplomad about how to appeal a block. I predict that any appeal will fail, but you never know. Guy (Help!) 12:23, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

While some of the usages are legitimate references, most of them are simply spam on unrelated websites. (i.e. an one-liner comment about hit count of Ford's website when article is about Ford Motor Company.)--Voidvector (talk) 15:16, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I can't get this page to load -- it's as if there's no code or html on the page.

Anyone else experience this?

I'm in the process of blacklisting the deluxecruises.com links (see above) and I need to disable live links on that page.
