Create

I am hoping to create a one stop portal for kent so please help out if you can Cheveney 20:56, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll help all I can, studies permitting. Do you have any ideas on what needs doing? Standardisations? In a nutshell, what can I do? KevinCarmody 19:47, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think getting editing/using the 'portal' page is the best start, welcome aboard :) . Olive Oil 22:26, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've done a load of stuff. Lists (damn, they weren't fun to do), more 'did you knows' with common formatting, some what you can do bits. A featured article which I'm afraid I'm biased on as I did much of the work on it, I wanted it to be somewhere like Maidstone but that article is a mess, one of those vote things like the biography would be cool. Also various other little fixes. Sorry if my own biases have shown through but I haven't worked on many of the other Kent articles and so don't know them so well, I'll learn 'em though :) Thought I should also point out Portal:South East England. Hope this portal wont overlap too much. Ok, I'll come back and do more later. KevinCarmody 02:40, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
May I suggest we have an semi-automatic selected biography, picture and article. Just like the one on Portal:South East England. I will set it up if I get a few "agrees" MortimerCat 19:51, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Be bold and do it, i see no one passionately objecting! Pickle 15:11, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am wary of setting it up, then having to maintain all by myself! MortimerCat 21:33, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We now have a picture of the week (Weeks start Mondays), and I have set up enough to take us into the first week of Feb. Next question is how do we update.
I have set up a talk page Portal talk:Kent/Pictures which acts as a nomination page and a record of previous weeks. I do not see the need to have a general vote, just a rule that two editors need to agree on the validity of the picture.
If someone joins in, then I will do the same with the selected article and biography. I am open to any comments people wish to make. MortimerCat 01:25, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weekly articles and biographies

As my picture worked, and I was able to get suggestions, I will set up weekly articles for the other bits. MortimerCat 01:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, keep up the good work. [[User:O1ive|Olive Oil 01:14, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Articles

Have a look at the Portal:World War I section for the random article selection, it chooses from 10 subjects each time the screen is purged/loaded. i can create the pages and set up the code if required, does any one fancy writing the ten small sections inc photos etc - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮ - 08:58, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just looking at the template, it doesn't have to be ten, you just set the parameter to how many articles you have prepared. That makes it much easier to handle the future nominations. I am happy to start making some pages, if you set it up. You can include the pictures too. It would be handy if you used the existing picture of the week directories, and I will fill in the missing ones at the beginning. MortimerCat 10:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Created, currently using only the one page (change the code for any new articles), copied the Ramsgate article to Portal:Kent/Featured article/1,
As you've probably guessed I've created Category:WikiProject Kent Featured article - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮ - 14:26, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A grid for the articles on Portal:Kent/Featured article - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮ - 14:52, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biographies

I have set up random biographies, plus I have added instructions to the nomination and index pages. It would be nice if I could get a few nominations for articles and biographies, just to start of with a reasonable selection. MortimerCat 01:36, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looking good, I'll add a few tomorrow (today) - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮ - 01:41, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

Reading Portal/Guidelines it seems that we shouldn't be using "thumbs", in the article/biog sections as this creates a problem with the background - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮ - 10:34, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed a few thumbs, and reduced the picture size in the featured article. I will go through them methodically later, checking the pictures too. MortimerCat 18:17, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed all the live random pictures to match our standard. So if any appear that look odd, missing credits etc. please edit them. Just to warn you, do not change the max= parameter for the moment, there are some incomplete pictures still. However, I should get these finished tonight. MortimerCat 08:21, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All random articles complete, and portal page has the correct quantities. MortimerCat 22:33, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Portal peer review

Kent

I am hoping to improve this Portal to featured status, any comments and ideas will be gratefully received. - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮḍőпє - 01:45, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, ready?

  • Tabs - Rename "Main Kent Portal" to "Main Page" or "Main Portal Page", and Cats and topics, I see no featured content on that page, so I would remove that from the tab.
  • Intro - I like the map, but it seems alittle big, maybe doing as alot of geography portals, putting the flag and coat of arms above or below, such as Portal:Australia, but do keep your map, it's nice except fix the redirects and disambig links.
  • Articles - Link the bolded article titles for easy access, such as on the
    main page
    .
    • Archives - Use some system where the actual summary(as it appears on the main portal page) shows. There are a number of ways to do this.
  • News - Link the date, add a more... link to news source, and add an archive.
  • Bio - Same as articles about the archive. Pics to large for 800x600.
  • Pics - Center description, same about the archive as bios and articles. Pics to large for 800x600.
  • DYK - Why is there an anniversary in there? Either remove it or start an on this day type box.
  • The County - Is this box supposed to have rotated content, or is that the only fact about the county?
  • History - Either integrate this into cats and topics, or add a tidbit, such as the county box.
  • Related portals - Pics could be a bit smaller.
  • Wikimedia - Should be on the front page.
  • Main Topics - Either unlink the red links, or make em go somewhere. If there are any lists, add them.
  • Things you can do tab - Remove the table of contents. The whole page should be under portal namespace instead of wikiproject.
    • Would suggest removing the participants, that can be found on the project page.
    • Pending tasks should be merged into things you can do below it.
    • Things you can do should have aleast a few things in it.

Seems like alot, but it's all fairly small stuff. :) Joe I 02:23, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your thoughts, i'll be implementing them. - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮḍőпє - 08:40, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot use Fair Use images on Portals.

It is against Wiki policy to use Fair Use images on Portal pages, see

WP:FUC#9
. Basically, these means we have to remove all the pictures from the random biographies. I think is best if we do it, and add a bit more text at the same time. If we don't, someone else will come along and just zap the picture, which happened on some other Portals I am involved with.

nb There is debate on using Fair use on Portals here

Oh well! Someone came along and replaced our biography pictures with a "Fair use policy" picture. I went through the biographies and tidied up. This is why our biographies have no pictures now. MortimerCat 19:58, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sheerness to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page

I'm just letting you know that Sheerness will be the main page's Today's featured article on August 24, 2007. Epbr123 18:23, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well done mate, what a leap forward for a place that used to be the butt of many a local joke. Pickle 05:43, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neighbouring Portals

Surrey needs adding. Mjroots (talk) 12:11, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would there be any objections if I changed the portals box to use {{SEERelatedPortals}}? It would make it more compact, and consistent with the other South East England portals. Waggers (talk) 08:59, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take that as a no.  Done waggers (talk) 14:07, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notes on the churches in the counties of Kent, Sussex, and Surrey (1852) by Arthur Hussey

At English Wikisource, I have added the work s:Notes on the churches in the counties of Kent, Sussex, and Surrey by Arthur Hussey which contains an extensive notes section on the parish churches of the county. It has been a finicky work, however, I think that the detail and the images make it worthwhile. I hope that people are able to make use of the work for the village histories. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:26, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replace selected image?

I am planning to delete my rather poor old scanned photo File:Rochester Cathedral.jpg but see it is featured here. Is it possible to request that someone else's much better photo - File:Rochester Cathedral from Castle.JPG - be used instead?--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 17:51, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Modernise Portal

Would anyone object if I gave the portal a little spruce up to bring it more inline with the other portals. I think it looks a bit weary and dated. I was thinking red and white. Or perhaps someone has some other ideas. Thanks Chelb (talk) 20:31, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are

design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt
.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
