Deep background

Not really. I was working on some background and Windows crashed on me. So I'm going to drop the links to the sources here and slowly work on it, saving often, on this talk page, so don't mind me.

Medfly infestations are not without precedent, both in California and elsewhere in North America. Between 1975 and 1993 the state of California spent more than $170 million on medfly eradication programs meant to contain 12 different infestations.[1] In 1996 the state began utilizing sterile medflies in its eradication program and between 1996 and 2007 the state experienced five infestations.<ref name=sfchron/> A major 1981 medfly infestation cost Californians $40 million by itself.[1] The 1981 infestation turned into a political crisis and led to the beginning of the state's aerial spraying program in July of that year.<ref name=newsci/><ref name=brazil/> Medflies were found in traps as late as 2007 in Solano County, California.<ref name=sfchron/> The first medflies in Florida turned up in 1929 and they have been a constant threat to the citrus crop there ever since.<ref name=orlando/> Medfly sightings occurred in Florida in 1997 and 2010.<ref name=orlando/><ref name=boca/>

POV

This article presents the outbreak as if it were almost certainly a deliberate act. The references, however, do not support this. While there is comment other than form those who claimed to have released the flies, AFAICS it is all post-claim. Rich Farmbrough, 13:34, 16 March 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Conspiracy theory

This edit needs to be cut way down but some of this may be worth a few words. Invasive Spices (talk) 22:49, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
