"Portable Tenure"

It would be great if tenure transferred automatically from one job to another, but it doesn't. Also, I agree on the need to include a history of the ranks, as that was what I was looking for in this article. Ibycusreggio (talk) 09:59, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Aaron Gillette[reply]

Real Purpose of Page?

Due to the existance of (and much more detailed and referenced) page "Professors in the United States", I'm wondering what really this page is focusing on? Aside from the Administrative posistions, this particular article doesn't seem to be offering much more. I'm wondering if that is because it is not needed, or it doesn't have a real focus or direction. Perhaps more focus on the history of the posistions? I just think this page needs help and perhaps more of a clear purpose. IrishPearl 17:22, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reorder bulleted lists

Please can someone reorder all the bulleted lists of this article using the same criterion (ascending, descending)? If looking to the "other teaching and research personnel" paragraph, the order seems to be ascending (from the least important to the most important), but if looking to "Most common hierarchy" and to the administrative ranks the order is clearly descending (from the most to the least important). Moreover, I think the use of the prefix "reaserch" is absolutely not clear: in the text ("Most common hierarchy", "Background") only the research associate seems to deal with reserching tasks while the professor can teach and coordinate reserch activities as well. So, how can exist a Reaserch assistant/associate/(full) professor? Have those professors limited functions? Another suggestion: I think that a unique table showing in descending order the regular faculty members (bulleted list of "Most common hierarchy" paragraph) and other teaching and research personnel (see bulleted list of that paragraph) could be very useful. Maybe one of the column could record if that role correspond to tenured or not-tenured (/limited-term) personnel.

Thank you all, best regards.
