Evolution of the Ag Econ Field

I do believe that the history of the evolution of the agecon field needs more work. Lets do not underestimate the works of Dr. Henry Taylor and the works on land economics in 1880-1930's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.254.42.132 (talk) 20:19, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clean this page up a little

I wouldn't mind reworking this page a bit to more completely discuss AgEcon. Specifically I'd like to write to more closely follow the format of the Economics page. For each of AgEcon's subfields I'd like to write a little blurb about the major objectives and/or the unique spin put on the discipline by AgEcon. For example, in the case of IO, I will note that AgEcon scholars tend to focus on firms such as supermarkets or producer cooperatives. Also experimental economics is coming to the forefront of Ag and Resource Econ departments so I want to throw that in the mix.

Any objections to this project? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Colte94 (talkcontribs) 04:47, August 30, 2007 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Ther is a link to [[Development]] on this page that is linking to a disambiguation page. I'm not sure which (if any) of the more specific pages on types of development would be a better link in this context. Could someone please review the choices available and either re-direct the link or delete it? Thanks.Chidom talk  08:38, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Vanzetti's comment on this article

Dr. Vanzetti has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

I have never used the word "agronomics" with reference to agricultural economics, nor have I heard it used. Delete it.

Delete "In Asia, agricultural economics was offered first by the University of the Philippines Los Baños Department of Agricultural Economics in 1919."

Seven main topics are listed in the last paragraph in the Development section, but only two of these are treated in the next section, plus one not previously mentioned, "Production economics and farm management". I suggest include a paragraph on each of the seven topics.

The is no mention of food security, nor much said about agricultural policy.

Dr. Mogues's comment on this article

Dr. Mogues has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

At the end of the (short) section entitled "Careers in agricultural economics" I would suggest including information regarding the highest ranked agricultural economics institutions. Here is a suggested addition to that para:

" 'Research Papers in Economics', or RePEc, ranks the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) No. 1 from among all agricultural economics departments, followed by the agricultural economics department of the University of California Berkeley, and the economics department of Iowa State University[1]. World Bank ranks first from among institutions and economists in the field of agricultural economics.[2]"

Dr. Pouliot's comment on this article

Dr. Pouliot has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

I personally had never heard of the word "agronomics." A term that was used before was "farm economics." For instance, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (AJAE), the main journal in the field, used to be called the Journal of Farm Economics (https://www.jstor.org/journal/jfarmeconomics).

One particularity of agricultural economics is that it is tied to an industry. This not a typical way to define a field in economics. So of course the field of agricultural economics overlaps with many other fields in economics that are defined over tools and branches of economic theory. There is good information about the history of agricultural economics in the special issue for the centennial of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (http://ajae.oxfordjournals.org/content/92/2.toc).

In the United States, the development of agricultural economics is tied to the (second) Morrill Act (see http://www.nap.edu/read/4980/chapter/2) and with the mission of land grant University to educate non-college attendants through its extension service.

Remove "One scholar" and write explicitly the name of the person. Overall, the article needs re-writing. It is not well-structured, anecdotal and not informative.

Dr. Headey's comment on this article

Dr. Headey has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

-first sentence makes agricultural economics and agronomics sound synonmous (even though subsequent sentence notes the difference)

-under food and consumer economics, I think some mention of nutrition is pertinent: agricultural economists are studying bother undernutrition (mostly in developing countries) and overnutrition (mostly in rich countries).

-some mention of European agricultural economics association would be pertinent.

-under methods, I think agricultural economists are increasingly also using experimental techniques to evaluate agricultural and food programs.

Overall, the article could go into a bit more depth in terms of thematic areas.

Dr. Jambor's comment on this article

Dr. Jambor has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

This is a decent material but more work is need to complete the page. First, the author lists seven major topics in agricultural economics but just elaborates three of them. Second, in the development section, the industrial revolution, the green revolution, the global food price spikes and associated policy changes are to be addressed. Third, in the professional associations, the Agricultural Economics Society (AES) should at least be mentioned as a global player. Fourth, I would also add a section on leading universities and centres where this profession is run.

Dr. Wesseler's comment on this article

Dr. Wesseler has reviewed this Wikipedia page, and provided us with the following comments to improve its quality:

agronomics is : have not seen that term before.

"application of economic theory in optimizing the production and distribution of food and fibre" - this is to naroow, better "application of economic theory to the production, distribution, and consumption of food, feed and fibre"

Origins: this a very US view. The history of agecon started with the Physiocrats in France, Johann von Thünen in Germany, Thomas Malthus and David Ricardo in England.

...and the random coefficients regression" Three things are missing, the damage control framework by Lichtenberg and Zilberman and the fixed effects model by Mundlak (Mundlak, Y. (1978). On the Pooling of Time Series and Cross-section Data. Econometrica 46: 69-85.) and the contribution by von Thünen to spatial economics. Hayami and Ruttan introduced the induced innovation concept and Schmitt to Development Economics (Schmitt, G. (1989). Simon Kuznets’ “Sectoral Shares in Labor Force”: A Different Explanation of His (I+S)/A Ratio. American Economic Review, 79(5), 1262-1276.)

Developments in Europe and Japan are missing
