Tone issues?

Hi everyone, when I was reading through this article I came across just a general vibe that didn't feel super encyclopedic or on-brand for how I'm used to Wikipedia articles sounding. I can't quite put my finger on it, so I wanted to get a bit of a read on how other editors felt about it before I made any edits. Here are some examples of the casual (almost essay-ish?) tone that I was picking up on:

"Living in New York City was quite an adjustment for her. There she became somewhat addicted to riding trains and subways:"

"Baltimore is generally considered to have a true mix of Southern and Northern culture."

"The magic of her novels starts with her ability to create those characters in the reader's mind through the use of remarkably realistic details."

"Tyler is not without her critics."

I would also argue for the necessity of having an entire section devoted to "Work Habits", it just feels overly personal and a little extraneous to devote ink to what room she works in, what hours of the day, etcetera.

I feel that the kind of writing that I'm trying to point out doesn't hold up to Wikipedia best practice, but I'm not sure how to diagnose it, and I see that this page was evaluated as B-class so maybe it's not as messy as it seems to my eyes. Do any other editors see these as issues in the article? If so, I would be happy to move forward with making some serious edits to the page.

I am not an editor but I 100% agree with you on the tone of the article. It's obvious that most of this page was written by a well-meaning but very biased Anne Tyler superfan. I think some major editing is very much needed. NicolasJz (talk) 12:53, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
