I know a living Owen Biddle who is related to Francis Biddle, Attorney General under FDR and Nuremberg Tribunal judge. He told me that this line of Biddles are not related to the jewelry Biddle family. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.11.139.121 (talk) 00:44, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Samuel Biddle

Does anyone know if Samuel Biddle, a partner in the Philadelphia jewelery firm Bailey, Banks & Biddle, is related to the Biddle family described here? See [1] for the connection. --DThomsen8 (talk) 17:36, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That link is now dead, evidently after

Biddle Bros - related??

Relations

Let me see if an indented family tree would work to show relationships.

Branch of William Biddle, 3rd (1698–1756) and Mary Scull (1709–1790)

Branch of John Biddle (1707–1789) and Sarah Owen (1711–1773):

  • Owen Biddle, Sr.
    (1737–1799), married Sarah Parke
    • John Biddle (1763–1815)
      • William Biddle (1806–1887), married Elizabeth Garrett (1806–1881)
    • Owen Biddle, Jr. (1774–1806),
    • Clement Biddle (1778–1856), married Mary Canby (1780–1849)
      • Robert M. Biddle (1814–1902), married Anna Miller (1823–1891)
        • Henry Canby Bidde (1845–1886), married Anna Mary McIlvain (1850–1926)
  • Clement Biddle (1740–1814), married Rebekah Cornell

        Biddle University

Doubtful ones

Moving ones without articles nor citations (first one especially dubious):

  • Thomas Edward Biddle Sr. (1900–1944), veteran of the First World War, was awarded two purple hearts after being shot by a German sniper the day before and after his 19th birthday in the head
  • Richard Thomas Biddle (born 1955) Former CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo
  • David Biddle, (born 1958) Former Director of the Greater Philadelphia Commercial Recycling Council, Current Recycling Director for the City of Philadelphia.

Have you considered Owen Biddle (musician)?--DThomsen8 (talk) 21:39, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The above list was just the ones without articles nor citations. That one has an article, but looking at it, nowhere in the article does it even mention any ties to the family. A few others do assert a connection, but I would say unless there is some evidence of a relation, just sharing a surname does not qualify the inclusion. There already is a Biddle disambig page for people sharing the name. So unless sources are found they should not be on this list, right? W Nowicki (talk) 19:52, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They should not be on this family tree list, but they should be on the disambig page for the convenience of editors and readers.--DThomsen8 (talk) 12:25, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, looking at Owen Biddle (musician) I see two sources that say he is related, although both refer to Wikipedia! So not sure they can be classified as "reliable". However, one claims the author contacted his father and confirmed. So perhaps accept good faith and just say exact relation not known. That source also says that Jesse Biddle is 9th cousin, even though in the Jesse article it does not mention any ties to this family, and it is not in the category. One of the sources does say his father is David, presumably the one listed above as born in 1958?

When I get the opportunity, I will go to the HSP and make a copy of their Biddle geneology for posting here. --DThomsen8 (talk) 21:36, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes thanks, that might help. The finding aids are online, but there is probably more of course in the files. Meanwhile still work to do:

Now Melvin E. Biddle article does not assert any connection to this line, and is not in the category. Not from Pennsylvania either.

Christopher Columbkille Biddle makes the assertion in the article and is in the Category, but without any source to back it up. I doubt that article would survive a notability challenge, since the only sources are company web sites and two press releases. Looks like just a vanity self-promotion page.

** Note: this particular Christopher C. Biddle is the grandson of Eric Harbeson Biddle, who appears above in Nowicki's chart, hence the original inclusion on the Biddle Family page for these particular branches.

Peter Biddle asserts a connection and is in the category, but without any source.

John Biddle (yachting cinematographer) seems to given a connection. Will work on that. his article needs to be more encyclopedic instead of promotional, but seems notable.

Woah. When did this page switch from being a list of notable members of the Biddle family to only notable members who are specific descendants of specific Biddles? Centerone (talk) 23:42, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just started editing this today, so I don't know the history of the page. Right now it's the history of known descendents of the brothers William and John Biddle, who settled in Philadelphia, along with their notable descendents. It doesn't include everyone who happens to have the Biddle name because they're not necessarily related. My guess is that descendents of William and John, being so notable, have a well-known pedigree, and therefore constitute a family, as opposed to just sharing the same surname.
I converted the list into a pedigree because almost everybody on the list fit in the pedigree W Nowicki made. The ones I removed are listed in the section "Change list to pedigree" below. Tocharianne (talk) 00:34, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well then either we need two pages.. One specifically on "descendants of the X & Y Biddle..." and another of "List of Biddles"... either that or perhaps totally transforming the page is not necessary. Rather than deletions perhaps a section could be called "Other notable Biddles". i.e. a list of Biddles who may or may not be related, but are notable. It is likely that at least _some_ of them are, such as the Philadelphians David Biddle & Jesse Biddle. (David didn't have a page, but I believe he has held a number of notable positions in his career(s).) With hundreds of years of history, and several branches of the family the genealogy is probably pretty spread out by now. Centerone (talk) 18:04, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Since this page is called Biddle Family, every one on it, by definition, must be related to each other. Compare this to Bush family which does not include anyone with the Bush name unless they're explicitly related. Other Biddles are already included in the Biddle page. Certainly this particular Biddle family appears to be the most prominent one as shown by the large number of members who have wiki pages. Tocharianne (talk) 14:42, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This one doubtful, as you mention. Thomas Edward Biddle Sr. (1900–1944), veteran of the First World War, was awarded two purple hearts after being shot by a German sniper the day before and after his 19th birthday in the head. The armistice was in November 1918, before he could have turned 19. Valetude (talk) 13:28, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sydney Biddle Barrows?

Would it be too vexatious to include 'Mayflower Madam' Sydney Biddle Barrows as a curio-footnote to this colourful family history? 109.154.27.194 (talk) 15:49, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nicholas Biddle

i have removed the name of nicholas biddle, born 1986. it linked to a disambiguation page with 2 n.b's, neither of them him. being an amateur boxer or graduate in architecture 3 years ago do not make one notable.i suspect someone thought this amusing.Toyokuni3 (talk) 15:03, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Change list to pedigree

I changed the list of people to the pedigree that W Nowicki made, which is much easier to read,

I kept Peter Biddle since his page asserts he's a descendent of Nicholas Biddle.

I removed the following who don't assert a genealogy on their page:

I removed the following who don't have wikipages and have no known genealogy:

** Note: this particular Christopher C. Biddle is the grandson of Eric Harbeson Biddle, who appears above in Nowicki's chart, hence the original inclusion on the Biddle Family page for these particular branches.
