Mark Enlightenment and Nehme1499, thanks for making this new article! I made a few changes, hope it's ok, let me know if you have any questions. I wasn't sure what to do with the Arabic translations, because I didn't find them in the source, and I don't know what the common names in Arabic are. So I just left them out and used the transliterated version llahže ššāmiyye that I did find in the source. I don't know why it also seems to be used in the Levantine Arabic article, and it's not sourced there. --IamNotU (talk) 01:44, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe we should add several alternative names to the Arabic page or even fully change its name. No standard name exists for this dialect in Arabic which causes this issue. I've heard that no Damascene in Damascus would call Damascus Damascus and they call it instead ash-sham (literally, the Levant); as such, they would call the dialect لهجة الشام (literally, the dialect of Levant) or اللهجة الشامية (literally, the Levantine dialect) as used in the article in Latin letters. They also call it لهجة الشوام or لهجة الشاميين which literally means the 'dialect of Levantines'. Not to mention that non-Syrians call it frequently the 'Syrian dialect' in the Middle East which while inaccurate, is the most used name for this dialect in Arabic as far as I can tell.

In English, it is never called the 'Levantine dialect' as this is reserved for the broader linguistic category and I am only aware that it is called DA and SA (as used in the article respectively). Mark Enlightenment (talk) 06:45, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've found a map for Syria where Damascus is clearly distinguished from the rest of Syria here. And another map where Damascus districts are clearly shown in Latin letters here. I believe using both of them would be better than using a map for Levantine Arabic as the page's topic is specifically DA. Mark Enlightenment (talk) 09:58, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a map showing the area of the Northen Levantine language group is more relevant than a simple map showing Damascus, if there were some sort of lingusitic association to the Damascus map then it would be definitely more viable than the current map. Some of the phonemes in the phonology section either do not have their separate grids (e.g. (q) which is uvular, /mˤ/, /bˤ/ and /lˤ/ which are emphatic) or there isn't a grid at all for them (e.g. (θ) which is dental). I tried to create a different space for them but unfortunately I couldn't so I resorted to the seen solution with not adding /θ/ and adding (q), /mˤ/, /bˤ/ and /lˤ/ in not-so-precise grids. Yes, that'll do. I only need a new 'dorsal' section between 'labials' and 'alveolar', a plain/emphatic distinction in 'labials' like how it is the case in 'Alveolar' already, and finally a 'Uvular' section of its own between 'Velar' and 'Pharyngeal' instead of the merge between uvular and velar used here.
