Communist Loyalties

Stewart is known to have joined the Communist Party, USA in 1936. He was active in the Communist-front group the League of American Writers. He stayed with the group after the Nazi-Soviet pact when most members left in disgust. He supported anti-war and isolationist activities designed to keep the USA out of WWII, activities of the type he later said were the exclusive province of wealthy fascists. After Nazi Germany broke the pact and invaded the Soviet Union, he and the League suddenly switched to loud calls for war with Germany and aid to the Allies.

All of this info can be found either in his 1975 autobio 'By a Stroke of Luck', or in the Congressional Record for September 2nd 1942, in testimony given by Francis Biddle (FDR's Attorney General). I think it should be included in the article, but do not want to go to all the trouble of writing and sourcing just to have it reverted by some troll. What is the policy on adding material?

An exact date for his leaving the Party would be useful, if anyone can properly source it. 2.25.46.76 (talk) 00:13, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to improve it, but the Spanish version looks much better. Maybe his films work is more appreciated in Spanish speaking nations or in least by one fan there.--T. Anthony 06:18, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
