Later in the conversation, after hearing that Thomas Pickering was a candidate to serve as US ambassador in Jordan (he got that position), Kissinger responded, “and he’s not Jewish”. A few weeks later Kissinger talked to Leonard Garment, a Jewish attorney who was Nixon’s partner at a New York law firm and served as the President’s informal advisor on Jewish affairs; Garment asked Kissinger whether he would recommend Edward Korry (former ambassador to Chile) for a certain administration position.
