Ganzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture? I think the m in Dkar-mdzes would likely result in an n sound rather than r. There are a lot of google hits for "ganze tibet". And this would explain the Chinese name.—Nat Krause(Talk!) 08:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply

The official spelling is “Garzê” according to Zhōngguó dìmínglù 中国地名录 (Beijing, Zhōngguó dìtú chūbǎnshè 中国地图出版社 1997), , p. 68 and 303.
For several reasons, I'm against simple Google polls as a basis for such decisions. In this case, one of the reasons why "ganze tibet" yields so many results is because "ganze" is a very common German word (88,100,000 hits). It should also be remembered that Garzê is in Sichuan, not Tibet.
Google gives 1,350 results for "Sichuan Garzê -der"[1] and 26 for "Sichuan Ganzê -der"[2] (excluding the word "der" to weed out German pages; similar results with "Tibet" instead of "Sichuan"). —Babelfisch 02:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great. If official sources say Garzê, then we'll keep it at Garzê. I had done some more googling and had also begun to notice that there were some inconsistencies. For one thing, the most common spelling in non-government sources seems to be "Kardze", not "Kandze" or "Kanze". Perhaps, as this site implies, Ganzê is the pronunciation in Lhasa but Garzê is a more local pronunciation that the government uses as the basis for its spelling. I'll make some redirects.—Nat Krause(Talk!·What have I done?) 03:20, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
