That alone is enough reason to remove it, but in good faith, I've read through a number of sites and news articles about her. No mention of cancer in any of them. I think it should be removed. Rossrs (talk) 08:30, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the place of birth from Crouch End to Lower Holloway because I got a copy of her birth certificate and it is for a ' Birth in the Sub-district of Lower Holloway', Hillmarton Road. It says on the wikipedia page that Lower Holloway is an out of date term now, but it doesn't say its considered part of Crouch End now. In any case Lower Holloway is on the certificate. Hillmarton Road (lots of three story Victorian houses) is London N7 which is actually considered to be part of Islington, not Crouch End, which is a lot further north. Most Londoners would therefore say she was born in Islington. "Lower Holloway" even if it's on the certificate wouldn't really be considered an area of London but Hillmarton road is not far from Holloway Road and Arsenal football stadium. 29 June 2012 article in Islington Tribune Text: 'PROFESSIONAL artist and retired school teacher Eda Leech looks back at an idyllic childhood in Holloway more than 70 years ago with her best friend Jean Simmons, who went on to become a Hollywood film star.

For a few short years the two young girls, who lived near each other in Heathville Road, off Crouch Hill, were inseparable. Then the war came, Jean’s family moved away and the girls never met again.

Today Eda, aged 82, is calling for Islington Council to put up a plaque to Jean, who died two years ago, at her old house in recognition of her work as an actress. She has the support of local Lib Dem councillor Greg Foxsmith.

Jean Simmons was one of Britain’s most famous stars of the 1940s and 50s. She starred opposite Laurence Olivier and was often compared to Elizabeth Taylor.

Blue Badge guide and grandmother Eda, a former teacher at Holloway School, remembers Jean fondly from when they were both young children.

“My mother got to know her mother when I was about four and I became friends with Jean, who was about the same age”, said Eda, who has lived in the same house since 1934.

“I remember dolls’ prams and playing in the garden. She was very, very pretty and she knew it, of course. But she had a very nice side to her. This was before she had aspirations to be an actress and she wanted to be a teacher. We often played schools.”

Jean’s family – her father was a PE teacher – moved to Cricklewood.

“Of course, I followed Jean’s career, which really took off after the war when she starred in director David Lean’s film of Great Expectations.

“We never made contact again but I’ll never forget one day in the 1970s. I was standing outside our house when I saw a very attractive woman with a couple of young children in a car peering at Jean’s old house.

“Then I heard her saying that she wondered if the old holly tree was still there in the front garden. It was and is, even till this day.

“It was 35 years since we’d played together but I recognised her immediately. She didn’t see me and drove on slowly along the road.”

Cllr Foxsmith said: “Jean Simmons was a great actress and people don’t always realise that she spent her childhood in Islington.

This might be worth a mention in the article, as it certainly a funny anecdote regarding her time experiences working on

As would almost invariably be the case on Stanley Kubrick films from then on, the shoot was a slow and arduous one, involving 167 days of filming. At one point Tony Curtis was heard asking Jean Simmons: "Who do I have to screw to get off this film?" Simmons apparently replied: "When you find out, let me know." ^[1]
