Lead

We have a few options on how to refer to him:

  • Hong Kong American
    - the most longstanding version. I restored it to this because he was born in HK then became a US citizen. Nationality was the wrong word to use for the former, but the point is that he has passports for both the US and (presumably still) the HK passport.
  • Chinese American
    - The IP claimed this was specific enough. But I can't see how this is more informative than the first choice. Almost all Hong Kong people are Chinese or of Chinese descent. So "Hong Kong-American" already conveys that someone is (almost) certainly Chinese. But "Chinese-American" conveys nothing about being from Hong Kong.
  • "Hong Kong-born Chinese-American" could be another option. But maybe that's too convoluted.

@Spellcast:

1) Just because something is "longstanding", does not mean that it's right. After all, Wikipedia is about posting the right information, which is why we can edit these pages.

2) For you to say "presumably still" also reveals where you went wrong, because you should have checked the facts before presuming anything. Read his biography, even on this page. It said that he was born in HK in 1987 and grew up there until the age of 13. HK was returned to Chinese rule in 1997, and no so-called "HK passport" could exist after that, if such a thing as a "HK passport" had ever existed before. So, do the arithmetic yourself. Every Hong-Konger, including Jimmy O. Yang when he left Hong Kong, had a Hong Kong-SAR (Special Administrative Region) "passport" under Chinese sovereignty. Therefore, your "presumption" that he has a so-called "HK Passport" is obviously false. Based on the foregoing reasons, calling him "Chinese-American" is not only more informative, but also the only correct and truthful way to refer to his identity between these two options. This is also why Jimmy O. Yang himself has always proclaimed himself to be "Chinese" or "Chinese-American", or "Chinese from Hong Kong" in his own autobiography, but never such a thing as "Hong Kong-American". So, whoever made up the previous erroneous entry about his identity being "Hong Kong-American" should at least have some respect for the man in the biography and respect for the truth.

3) "Chinese-American" is also more accurate than "Hong Kong-American" according to your own point, because you admitted that only "almost" all Hong Kong people are Chinese. So "almost" cannot be "certainly", because they are self-contradicting. On the other hand, Chinese is Chinese. Therefore, only "Chinese American" is the accurate description of his identity.

4) To be more specific than "Chinese American", while also respecting the truth of his identity, you could say something along the lines of "Chinese-American born in Hong Kong, China" or "Chinese-American who grew up in Hong Kong, China".2604:6000:D786:6C00:CCAB:DB14:8B40:703E (talk) 21:57, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yang, not O. Yang

I've reverted some changes and made others to agree with

reliable sources on the name of the article's subject. Yang's own website, the Hollywood Reporter, SFGate.com, and Deadline all refer to him as Yang, not O. Yang. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 05:06, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply
