Pension

Olusoga, in the source cited, says that Alder received (in 1863) "a pension of £70" (the figure is also visible in Alder's own hand, on screen) and that this was "the equivalent of £40,000 in today's money". Online sources (e.g. [1]) says that £70 in 1863 is worth ~£8,700 today. {{Inflation|UK-GDP|70|1863}} converts the amount to £7135. Was that £70 quarterly? How can the difference be explained?
