June Almeida was an exceptionally gifted electron microscopist who made major contributions to clinical virology, but she did not discover coronaviruses.

Coronaviruses infect many species of mammals and birds. The coronaviruses that Almeida and Tyrrell reported in 1967 were those that cause the common cold, of which there are four types. She did not discover the viruses that cause SARS, MERS of COVID-19. It does her a discredit to perpetuate this untruth when there are so many of her genuine achievements that can be described.
