Her "real" name

"Kit Reed", according to the 1979 paperback/softbound edition of "The Science Fiction Encyclopedia" edited by Peter Nicholls and the 1993 hardbound and 1995 paperback/softbound editions of "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls, was the name used by Lillian Craig Reed.

Her entry in the '79 edition was written by John Clute and appears on page 492 and her entries in both the '93 and '95 editions was also written by John Clute and appears on pages 996-997.

Would it be possible to include her "real" name somewhere in the entry/article? 2600:8800:786:A300:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 03:47, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just did a quick search at "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" website and the entry there states that she legally changed her name from "Lillian Craig Reed" to "Kit Reed".
Even so, shouldn't her birth name be part of the entry/article? 2600:8800:786:A300:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 03:55, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see why her birth name, which she went to the trouble to change, is her "real name" or noteworthy. This is a question often raised on articles of transgender people, where I believe the consensus is that someone's "birth name" is not necessarily "encyclopedic." People who want to dig it up can probably do so, but there are a lot more noteworthy things about Kit Reed that we could work on. HouseOfChange (talk) 06:51, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've added her birth name to the article. I don't see any reason to hide it as it appears in a number of sources, eg. here, here and here. Was she transgender? I haven't found any sources citing that. —Bruce1eetalk 13:04, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Though her birth name may not be "noteworthy," it is a fact. And I thought that part of Wikipedia's pride was in dealing with & disseminating facts regardless of whether they're "noteworthy". And if it wasn't "noteworthy," then why do all the encyclopedias and encyclopedic websites that I've checked have it as part of her biographical information?

Thank you Bruce1ee for working her birth name in. Did you happen to notice how, depending on the sources you checked, the spelling of her first name differed? "Lilian" vs "Lillian". My three book sources go with the latter spelling, yet online sources are nearly split 50-50. Oh, well. 2600:8800:786:A300:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 05:46, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I didn't notice that. I've changed "Lilian" to "Lillian" as this appears to be the more commonly used spelling. A Google search for "Lillian Craig Reed" yields more notable sources (including several books) than for "Lilian Craig Reed", although, oddly, The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction spells her name "Lilian". I've also added a note to the article highlighting this discrepancy. —Bruce1eetalk 06:49, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I did not suggest that Kit Craig is transgender, only that the "birth name" versus "real name" issue has been debated elsewhere. One recent blogpost (not really RS but interesting) suggests she disliked having her birth name used: "But she said the fansite that reported on the street used her birthname when explaining the reference, which she’d legally changed to Kit. She said she wasn’t going to show anyone until they fixed their error."[3] HouseOfChange (talk) 12:34, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I misinterpreted your transgender point. Regarding Reed's birth name: she may not have liked it, but as I said above, many sources give her birth name, so it is already common knowledge. —Bruce1eetalk 17:14, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maiden name

I've reverted this edit claiming that her maiden name was Lillian Hyde Craig. I've found several sources stating that Lillian Hyde Craig was her mother's name ([4],[5],[6]). We need a reliable source giving her maiden before we can add it to the article. BTW some of the sources already cited in the article say she was born Lillian Craig Reed (or Lilian Craig Reed). Are they all using the word "born" incorrectly? —Bruce1eetalk 07:07, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A New York Times obituary lists her birth name as Lillian Hyde Craig and the article has been updated. The Times doesn't, however, say whether that was her maiden name or not. —Bruce1eetalk 09:07, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
