HISTORY

Although the town of Lincolnville is not cited in written sources until the 1860's, the area was well known to Europeans for 100's of years. The famous Spanish conquistor, Fernando Coronado, travelled in the area in 1541 in search of the mythical Cibola, The Seven Cities of Gold. The Santa Fe Trail ran just 4 miles to the northwest. Kit Carson, Jim Beckwourth, George and William Bent, Freemont and Pike and countless other explorers, traders, trappers, hunters, and military men had travelled through the area and no doubt explored it thoroughly.
