Calling Dot Com "articulate"

Odd roleplaying

It's an inadequate choice of words. It's a recurring joke that they engage in unusual forms of roleplaying, but it's not treated as deviant in the way that the word "odd" implies, it's just that they invent convoluted situations that seem to be very different from what is thought of as "typical" roleplaying. Cerie got merged here because she is only a minor character. She does not have as prominent role on the show as the characters who have their own pages, she doesn't even have a last name. I think the deciding factor should be much text a character has. The first four or so characters have so much accompanying text, I think they should put back in their individual articles. Proposed merger of multiple character pages

All of these character pages (Jack Donaghy, Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney and Kenneth Parcell) are nothing but fanpages that contain only "in-universe" material. The WP:notability (fiction) page says "Articles on fiction elements are expected to cover more about "real-world" aspects of the element, such as its development and reception, than "in-universe" details." These article do not mention any 'real world' aspects. They are completely unnecessary and don't need more than a brief overview on this page: List of 30 Rock characters.   • Oppose I think the characters are notable. I agree that there might not be enough "real-world" elements to articles such as Jack Donaghy, but I think it just needs to be improved upon. Not using this as an argument, but the main characters in other TV series and movie series have their own page, and I argue that only because the article is not up to standard, it should just be improved upon and not merged. Comment - Kenneth Parcell recently survived an article for deletion/redirect so I don't think a merge discussion will go anywhere. I do personally think that Jack Donaghy is notable in the real world based on what I have seen of him in areas outside of 30 Rock, followed by Liz who is mostly notable by association with Tina Fey. The rest are questionable though Tracy Jordan is 50/50. I do think all the articles need a hatchet taking to them however, and a blanket removal of most of the fan-site style info wouldn't be a bad thing. EDIT Looking at Jack in particular, it is unsourced but apparently he has won like 12 awards for the character, so that is pretty notable. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 11:04, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realize there were so many fictional character pages here. I'm still new though so I'm learning a lot. I'll chock this up to being too

bold. Now that I know more info based on your comments I think that Donaghy, Lemon, and Parcell definitely deserve their own pages, but still need work. I think I will take off the merge tags on all of them for now; though the Maroney one might be better off merged. I might start a new one for that later. Thanks for your input guys. Just a note, but there being a lot of character pages isn't really a good thing. Fans make them for anyone, go check out the list of Office characters for the US version. I just recently managed t get 5 or 6 of them merged, for characters that had appeared in 2-3 episodes at most. Same with Parks and Recreation, fans think their characters are super important and need an article but can offer little beyond a run down of events that happened to them in episodes. Being a character or main character in a show should not be justification for an article. I wouldn't, say, give the kids from Roseanne articles, whereas Roseanne and Dan Conner both have significant real world notability, they were huge at the time and still show up as rated examples of fictional couples. Does

Liz Lemon seems notable because she is so closely related to Tina Fey, and Jack Donaghy seems notable because of all the awards won for his portrayal. As for Kenneth Parcell, I think he would be notable if there could be found evidence of his overwhelming sexism having a major effect. Tracy Jordan could be notable considering he was named by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 characters in the past 20 years, but the article needs severe cleanup, including removal of sections such as "notable scenes". Liz Lemon has two sections

Liz Lemon currently gets two sections in the article:

The airline having lost her luggage en route to Jack and Avery's wedding, Liz is wearing newly purchased tennis whites and a "State Department recommended mosquito net" when serving as Jack's best 'man'; Avery, meanwhile was in a black cocktail dress, thus confusing the non-English speaking officiant who nominally marries Jack and Liz.
At the encouragement of
Pete Hornberger, Liz uses her temporary status as Mrs. Donaghy to blackmail Jack into restoring TGS’ full budget, and goes so far as to hold a press conference dressed as Jaqueline Kennedy and sporting a bad Boston accent to announce the couple's five million dollar donation to found The Jack and Elizabeth Donaghy High School for Teen Drama, The Arts, and Feelings. Despite the unintentional, temporary, and platonic nature of their de jure marriage, NBC regulations require the pair to attend an anti-nepotism counseling session with Jeffrey Weinerslav
where they realize that their mutual relationship has been the longest and most meaningful relationship either of them has ever had. Jack subsequently names his and Avery's daughter Elizabeth.
Jack's mother, Colleen, who rarely has a positive thing to say about anyone, takes an immediate liking to Liz in "Hiatus" and advocates her as perfect for Jack.

Why? She is not different characters, merely the same character with a different name. At most, this warrants a comment to discuss the accidental marriage, but should not be written to introduce her as if a different character. It's also bizarre that the second occurrence (which relates mainly to a single episode, I believe) is so much more expansive than the first occurrence which relates to the main protagonist over the entire series. —sroc (talk) 04:36, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone else think he needs a place under the "Recurring GE/NBC/Kabletown employees" section as a parody of himself? He's appeared in numerous episodes throughout the series (including last night's "There's No I in America") and has more than established himself as a reoccurring part. Too "In-Universe"?

This entire article is written from an in-universe perspective. Would there be support for removing a bunch of "character attributes" that are actually just single-sentence jokes?

An example of a poorly-structured sentence: "The following is a supplementary list of recurring characters—including those appearing briefly in multiple episodes, such as a regularly-appearing writer—about whom little is known."

An example of excessive detail: "Gretchen Thomas (Stephanie March) is a "brilliant plastics engineer / lesbian" and a friend of Jack Donaghy from his rotation in General Electric's plastics division. Assuming Liz to be bisexual if not a lesbian (and maintaining that her shoes are "definitely bi-curious"), Jack sets up the pair on a blind date in "Blind Date". When proposing the idea to Liz, Jack refers to her simply as 'Thomas' (much as he generally addresses Liz by her surname, Lemon), and Liz is thus unaware of Gretchen's gender until meeting her. Despite Liz's lack of sexual attraction toward Gretchen, the two bond over dinner and Gretchen informs Jack that she finds Liz "great" and thinks she looks like Jennifer Jason Leigh. They enjoy a succession of platonic dates until Gretchen expresses that she feels she is starting to chase the straight girl and decides they should stop seeing each other. Liz attempts to make a pact that they get back together after 25 years and start a relationship then if they are both still single (including an offer to let Gretchen "do stuff to [her]" as long as Liz is not expected to reciprocate), but Gretchen walks away."
