I get the impression from the articles I've read that it was natural causes, but I'm not sure.

According to this the cause of death was emphysema and pneumonia.

Year of birth

There's some disagreement over his year of birth. The Guardian says 1938 and the Independent 1939. I'm inclined to go with the former since reports about him earlier in the year put him as 70 and his birthday was apparently 1 November.
