I changed the title to 'community' because they are not considered 'immigrants' any more than any non-indigenous ethnic group in Guyana. Therefore the term was misleading. --Mediterraneo (talk) 18:42, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the statement "they are now demanding to be called Europeans" is inappropriate, I am Portuguese-Guyanese and have no idea what the author is talking about, even if this is true of some it is a gross generalization. I think what the auhtor is touching upon is the fact that under the British colonial system the Portuguese were not considered "white" and to this day Guyanese make a distinction between a "puttagee" and a "white" person, the latter referring to the English or European/North American foreigners. An early slang among Africans in Guyana for Portuguese was "yellow bakra" which literally means "yellow white man." I think in general most Portuguese-Guyanese are quite proud of being "puttagee" and would not want to be confused with "white" i.e. foriegners.

In general I think this articles deals with gross generalizations, especially concerning the relation between race and class. Not all Portuguese were rich shopkeepers no more than all Blacks or Indians were poor labourers, all the communties of Guyana with the possible exception of the Amerindians became further divided by class. Remember the Portuguese who came from Madeira, like all indentured labourers were desperately poor people, and although their relative degree of skin priveledge allowed them to advance in British Guiana easier than their fellow colonial subjects certainly not all did, to this day there are many poor, working class puttagee families.Martins79 (talk) 20:46, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Martins79[reply]

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 00:06, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
