Dabei kann sich Tilda nicht nur auf ihr anspruchsvolles Mathematikstudium konzentrieren, sondern muss sich, weil die Mutter alkoholkrank ist und Väter die Familie verlassen haben, auch um die 11-jährige Halbschwester Ida kümmern.[4][5]

Caroline Wahl grew up with three siblings near Heidelberg and Stuttgart and after her school days, she studied German Studies and German Literature in Tübingen and Berlin. After that and among other things, she worked as a publishing assistant of the Diogenes Verlag in Zürich. During this time, Caroline Wahl wrote her first novel, 22 Bahnen, in three months.[1] Her love of the sea led her to Northern Germany in 2022, where she worked for a communications agency in Rostock. Since the success of her debut novel, she lives as an independent author in the Hansestadt.[2]

Her debut novel, 22 Bahnen, was published in April 2023 by the

first-person perspective. Amidst this, she cannot simply focus entirely on her demanding mathematics studies, but because her mother is an alcoholic and their fathers have left the family, she also has to look after her 11-year-old half-sister Ida.[12][5]

Reviewers of the novel, like Elke Heidenreich, Christine Westermann or Denis Scheck affirm that the author has found a poignant writing style, in which the destiny of both sisters can be authentically perceived by the reader, without the author addressing the reasons for the mother's alcoholism.[13][14][15][16][17]

Though one sentence seemed a little weird, I'd write something like

Dabei hat die Schriftstellerin keine eigenen Erfahrungen mit Suchtproblemen im familiären Umfeld, führte jedoch unter anderem Gespräche mit Personen, welche in Suchtstationen arbeiten, um die Thematik realistisch wiederzugeben.[18]

Caroline Wahl wollte immer einen Roman über eine starke, eigenwillige, aber auch sensible junge Frau schreiben und sieht hier insbesondere die Romane von Alina Bronsky Scherbenpark, Angelika Klüssendorf Das Mädchen sowie Spieltrieb von Juli Zeh als Vorbild.[2] Der Stil und Thema des Romans sprechen dabei auch insbesondere jugendliche Leser an, so wurde 22 Bahnen bald nach seiner Veröffentlichung beim Sozialen Netzwerk BookTok besprochen.[1] Der Norddeutsche Rundfunk wählte die Erzählung zum NDR-Buch des Monats Mai 2023.[5]

Auf der Spiegel-Bestsellerliste konnte sich der Roman 30 Wochen unter den Top-20 im Kalenderjahr 2023 platzieren und wurde in diesem Jahr mehr als 100.000 Mal in Deutschland verkauft.[19] In seinem Erscheinungsjahr erhielt die Erzählung den Buchpreis der Stiftung Ravensburger Verlag, den Bayern-2-Publikumspreis, den Ulla-Hahn-Autorenpreis, den Grimmelshausen-Förderpreis und wurde zum Lieblingsbuch des unabhängigen Buchhandels gewählt.

Im Jahr 2024 erscheint mit dem Titel Windstärke 17 der zweite Roman der Autorin, welcher auf der Insel Rügen spielt und dann insbesondere das weiter Leben der schon bekannten Romanfigur Ida thematisiert.[20]

The novel's style and subject especially appeal to young readers, and 22 Bahnen was discussed on the social network BookTok soon after its publication. The German radio and television broadcasting corporation Norddeutscher Rundfunk chose the story to be the NDR's book of the month in may 2023. [3]

The novel could place itself among the top 20 on the Spiegel's bestsellerlist in the calendar year 2023 and it has been sold more than 100,000 times in the same year.[4]

In its year of publication the story received the book price of Stiftung Ravensburger Verlag, the German literature prices Ulla-Hahn-Autorenpreis as well as Grimmelshausen-Förderpreis, and it was chosen to be the favourite novel of independent bookshops.

In 2024, the author's second novel "Windstärke 17" will be published. It is set on the island of Ruegen and deals with the future life of Ida, a character already introduced in the first novel.

I think your translation is really good! There are, however, a few really minor things that I would change. Could be up to personal preference though! I know, that in the first sentence “own experience” is correct regarding the original sentence. I would leave out the “own”, because I think it sounds better :D. And, I would probably change “Work on the addiction wards” to “work in addiction wards”. In “particularly functioned as a role model”, I would put “particularly” before. So it would be “and particularly the novels by Alina Bronsky…” As for the endings, I think both work fine :). The second one, to me, sounds a little bit more natural, but the first is more accurate to the initial article. But no worries, if you don’t agree! :D
